Houston Freshman Showcase – G’s Top Performers – Vol. 3

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Prep Dig had a stop of its Freshman Showcase in Houston on Saturday, players who are just about to start their high school careers had a great opportunity to compete against (and with) some of the top talent in the region and to showcase their skills to scouts and college coaches.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>There were more than 60 prospects on the court during the event held at the [program_tooltip program_id='431337' first='Texas' last='Tornados'] club, coming not only from H-Town, but also from several other cities in the Lone Star State, such as Austin, San Antonio, McAllen and Corpus Christi, and it was a highly competitive, yet very fun atmosphere.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Fellow Prep Dig scout Mallori Howington, myself and the court coaches were paying attention to everything and were pleased to see many prospects standing out with their strong play. Extremely physiscal, she was a force at the net in the match-like drills and also displayed really interesting skills in the hitting drills before that. She moves really smoothly on the court and has a very heavy right arm, which makes her very difficult to be stopped. Her clean touch on the ball was on display early on display early on as she was very accurate and consistent with her locations during the warm-up drills. When we turned to match-like drills, it was possible to see her impressive technical skills combine with a very high volleyball IQ, which resulted on a fast-paced offense with a smart ball distribution. She wasn't the tallest player on the court, but is extremely athletic and that was of big help for her, especially on offense. Rachal jumps really well and has excellent body control, which allows her to adjust to sets and to take an extra second to look at the block before making a decision. She also connects really well with the ball in her swing, getting great precision in her shots. Very calm and confident on the ball, she got great touches on defense, delivering very precise digs to the setters she got to work with. Khalaf's positioning was always very good, but it was her technical skills that helped her have such a high level of efficiency with her play. She used her physical tools very well, getting off the floor with a lot of power and using her long arms to make a strong impact with her blocking and to make contact with the ball at a very high point on offense. She was swinging with a lot of power all day and made very few errors.
