Top Performers: Oregon's State Finals 2025 Part 1

It was a tough battle between all teams, but only four were allowed to advance to the semis. The first two matches were between Sprague and South Medford on court one and Nelson and Sheldon on court two. Sprague left with the win, 3-0, as did Sheldon, 3-1. The second two matches were between Oregon City and Jesuit on court one and South Eugene and South Salem on court two. Jesuit secured the dub 3-0 and so did South Salem, 3-1. Later that night the semi finals commenced with Sheldon against Sprague and Jesuit against South Salem. Jesuit won again, 3-2, as did Sprague, 3-1.   Fast forward to November 8, where the age-old rivals, Jesuit and Sprague, faced each other once again. After an incredibly well played match, Jesuit won it all, 3-2, making them the Oregon State champions for three years in a row.   All teams that participated this weekend played incredibly hard, giving their all and playing until they could play no more. Here are the players that really stood out this weekend, showing improvement over the season and going out with a bang:    Mitchell, an outside for South Medford, played exceptionally well this weekend. She has an excellent vertical, using her skills to hit off of blockers hands and transition off the net fast. Her power is off the charts when she swings, giving it her all to score points and help her team get ahead.     Slaughter, a setter for South Medford, is incredibly active on the net, tipping and dumping when she gets the chance. She sees the court and knows when opposing defense is lacking. Even on extremely tight passes she makes that effort to set her offense and always keep the ball in play.     Akpan played as an outside hitter this weekend for South Medford, absolutely demolishing the ball. She is huge on the net taking away so much space and pressing hard when she blocks. She gets on top of the ball and hits over blocks when she does make a swing. Since she has played middle before, she can effectively hit a slide even in the outside position, showing her versatility and speediness.     Brewer, an outside for Sprague, had an amazing weekend. As her teams go-to hitter, Brewer proved that she and her team had every right to be there at the tournament. She transitions fast, talking loud to her setter. When Brewer gets up on the ball, you know an incredible point is about to be scored.     Friesen, Sprague's starting setter, played wonderfully this weekend. Her high volleyball IQ on the net makes her incredibly active, scoring points on her own with her tricky dumps to 4. The volleyball court is Friesen's second language, connecting well with her hitters, serving tough and uplifting her whole team with her contagious energy.     Andrews, an outside for Nelson, never fails to impress. She was the star of the show this weekend, creating crazy energy and even crazier swings. At one point her team was down 10-17 only to come back to 17-19 due to Madi's consistent kills. Her control on the net is admirable especially in scramble plays when her sets are off the net.     Bennett, the starting setter for Nelson, runs a fast offense with her low and speedy sets. Her back 1 and front quick combo is lethal, tripping up opposing offenses and keeping up with the speed of the game. Her bouncy fingers and fast releases makes her a setter to watch this upcoming club season.     Law played as a middle for Nelson this weekend, working hard to get up and get the ball. She has fast hands on the net, pressing over and getting blocks. She has excellent reads, never releasing too fast and staying controlled on the net. When in trouble, she has a great push to deep corners that can usually score her team points.     Trees, the starting libero for Nelson, goes for everything. Her angles are consistent and to the setter, dropping her shoulders when needed. You can always count on Trees to make a move towards the ball whether it's right in front of her or feet away.     Zauner, a middle for Sheldon, took up so much space on the net this weekend. She is huge in the middle getting touches and blocks whenever she gets up. Her transition is fast, allowing her to always be an option when she gets up.     Smith, an outside for Sheldon, has incredible hops. She is undersized but do not let that fool you as she can bang the ball whenever she wants. She never gives up on a play, diving for balls in the backrow and tipping or pushing off of hands when she is in the front row.     Tuioti played for Sheldon as a pin hitter this weekend, showing that her power can dominate the court. She is another small but mighty hitter and most definitely should not be undermined when she is on the net. She reads the ball well in defense and refuses to let the ball drop without effort on her part.
