USAV GJNC Showcase 1: Must See Setters

Setters are constantly on the move, chasing down passes, delivering hittable balls with the right tempo and height, reading the defense, running a strategic offense, and adjusting to their hitters throughout the game. It is a position that requires constant thought. It is also a position that requires athleticism, good decision making skills, excellent communication, and a whole lot of consistency. Its definitely not easy. However, with all that said, it is also one of the most beloved positions on the court. She is a true competitor by nature. She moves quickly, gets her feet to the ball quickly, and has strength to get the ball to its location. One of the things that stood out most was her ability to reverse the ball against the flow. This allowed her to isolate her attackers and creating advantages for her squad. She has the height (6'1") ,strength, and already displays a considerable amount of control for a young setter. Her hands were soft and consistent which allowed her to deliver hittable balls all over the court. However, Barrero stood out almost immediately. She is exceptionally quick, fearless, and displays a level of consistency that is advanced for her age. Whether the pass was perfect or off target, she worked hard to get to the ball and deliver quality sets to her hitters. Her competitiveness showed throughout the event as she continually pushed herself. She showcased good hands with a clean release while effectively moving the ball around the court. One thing that stood out was her willingness to adjust when a hitter struggled to score. She figured out if they needed it higher or faster and delivered. She is definitely a competitor. When given the opportunity, she will take a big swing herself which often caught the defense off guard. She moved efficiently both to her target and to the ball, allowing her to stay balanced. Because of her speed and that fact that she can get to nearly anywhere on the court, she is usually able to set the ball rather than being forced to pass it. That ability allows her to deliver cleaner, more precise sets to her hitters. She is quick to the ball, makes smart decisions, and possesses impressive range for such a young age. Throughout play, she did a good job of moving the ball around the court, finding her hitters, and reversing the ball when the situation allowed. She also stood out for her communication skills as she kept the attackers and passers on the same page. She's quick, hustles, is relentless, and does a great job of turning tough situations into successes. I was especially impressed with her ability to find her middles, whether the pass was right on target or when she was off the net. On the flip side, she was also one of the setters that played the best defense. During drills, she moved efficiently and showed great control of the ball. Throughout the evening, she consistently made smart decisions and never forced plays that weren't there. Instead, she did a great job of moving the ball around and putting her hitters in the best possible positions to score.
