At the start of the showcase Jeremy Strain and I agreed that we would each choose five top performers. After watching the talent level it became clearly apparent ten was just not enough. A tremendous amount of talent showed up at this event. We ended up choosing 14 top performers out of the 29 players participating but we could have easily selected more. While 15 fell short of accomplishing top performer status another post will talk about their talents.

Below are nine top performers from this class of 2029. Jeremy will post about the other five.

Gianna Bonnett DS/L (Annapolis Area Christian/Bay Area Volleyball Academy) - Impressed with the number of talented players attending Annapolis Area Christian School. Gianna was one of five players from that high school attending this event. Four of the five earned a top performer award. She appears taller than her 5'5 listed height. What impressed me most about her was her free ball shot that landed untouched after it hit the coffin corner of area one. Unclear whether she was aiming for that area but she hit it. She also showed good hustle, throwing herself to the floor on multiple occasions to secure a dig. That was not that unusual for the liberos from this group. Gianna will compete in Nationals this month with BAVA in the American Division. She was one of three BAVA players to earn a top performer award.

[player_tooltip player_id='747458' first='Angelie' last='Rose Carrasco'] DS/L (Colgan/[program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] Cozad) - Without a doubt the most enthusiastic player at this event. She was a high fiving flying machine. Trying to keep track of her on the court was a challenge as she celebrated a good play with everyone on her team. Judging from her hands at one point she set for a brief period in her volleyball career. She brings those soft hands when setting the out of system sets. Rose also passes nails. Colgan carries a couple returning frosh who played DS/L last year for the varsity. Her passing and hustle on defense will make it difficult for Colgan not to place her on the varsity as well. Rose will also play in USAV Junior Nationals in Dallas, competing in the National Division. While she lists herself on the 14-2 team she clearly appears on the Paramount Cozad roster.

Braylin showed good tempo when the middles were working on the quick tempo 3/1 sets. She also impressed with her defense when doing drills with the liberos. At 5'8" she brings some good height to the position.

One of two setters on the [program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] Cozad team that will play in the National Division when competing in the USAV Junior Nationals in Dallas. It also appears that she got the opportunity to play with the frosh for Woodbridge as an 8th grader.

Avery is one of the players I have followed in the class of 2029 based on her play as a middle for [program_tooltip program_id='494409' first='Blue' last='Ridge']. She was one of their top offensive performers this year, allowing the club to finish 4th in the Region and placing in the top 100 in the country at the 14U age group.

For some reason I was looking for her with the outsides. She reminds me a bit of [player_tooltip player_id='181302' first='Kennedy' last='Spaid'] when she was still a year out of high school. Ultimately, I found her hitting with the middles.

She does an excellent job of reaching high over the net to put up a solid block. At 5'10 she also brings the height for the position at the 14U age group. But looking at her play she might work out pretty well hitting from the left side as well.

Alaenah is still a bit raw with her game but the potential to shine exists. When her timing is right she puts the ball down with the best of them. She still tends to approach a little bit early which leaves her hitting underneath the ball. That will improve with repetition. While her vertical is good it would help her game growing a couple more inches.

When playing back row she can be an offensive force. At this age level finding a player capable of hitting a hard bic is rare. Her passing and defense in the back row still need work but those skills will also improve with time.

Alaenah will play for Virginia Juniors in the Junior Nationals in Dallas in the USA Division. When that finishes high school tryouts begin. Alaenah brings the potential to make the Battlefield varsity as a frosh.

Madison stands out as one of the emotional leaders for Virginia Juniors. At the showcase she remained a little muted. Perhaps playing with new players kept her more focused. Other than Alaenah her other teammates were absent from this event. That did not stop her from hitting lasers through the defense.

Her six rotation play excels, especially as a hitter. She swings hard and gets good velocity on the ball when hitting from the back row. It would not surprise me to see her hitting left side for Oakton as a frosh. Like Alaenah, a couple inches more of growth would help her left side dominance.

Madison will also play for Virginia Juniors at the Junior Nationals in Dallas playing in the USA Division. The competition will definitely bring a challenge to her game.

Bay Area Volleyball Academy stood out as one of the big surprises in the Chesapeake Bid Regional Championships. They qualified for a Freedom bid but bumped up to American as Maryland Juniors and Metro earned open bids. [player_tooltip player_id='762823' first='Brie' last='Mouton'] was one of the main reasons for that success, setting a 5/1 offense. She told me she normally sets a 5/1 for the team.

She will also attend Annapolis Area Christian School as will another quaity setter at the event in [player_tooltip player_id='749757' first='Dakota' last='Pentorn']. Brie seems to maintain a steady calmness when on the court. Her choices and consistency in location reflect that of a much older player.

Alex came from Pennsylvania to attend this event, making her the lone player outside the DMV. She certainly held her own against the DMV competition. Her 5'8" height with good hops showed up early when she roofed a much taller player while playing front row. It also appears she sets a 5/1 where she sneaks in a few one handed pineapple dumps into area "4".

Alex showed soft hands and excellent location with her sets. She also kept up with the liberos when playing defense when taking a break from setting. It would not surprise me to see her set for Parkland as a frosh.

When Sierra plays there always exists a certain aura of confidence when she stands on the court. That probably comes from her father, who played professional basketball for ten years, including a couple years with the Wizards. She displays that attitude that she controls the game. Not in a loud, flashy sort of way but in a quiet calmness letting her actions define her skill.

She dominates the game when on the court. Her athleticism ranks supreme. Not a lot of 14s have an athletic combo like her and Emmerson Wolfe hitting left side. Sierra plays six rotations but sometimes finds herself removed late in the game for a defensive player. In tine I suspect that part of her game will improve.

Sierra will play in the Open Division with Maryland Juniors in the USAV Junior Nationals in Dallas. They rank 15th nationally.
