The object of unfamiliarity can be advantageous or quickly turn into a weapon against teams.

The opposing head coach in Jessica Carnes may have been familiar to the Bishop Brossart Mustangs because Carnes served as an assistant on Danielle French's staff last year. However, the Mustangs and the New Richmond Lions from just across the Ohio River in the Southern [program_tooltip program_id='431739' first='Buckeye' last=''] Athletic and Academic Conference American Division were not familiar with each other because they had not played each other in recent times.

New Richmond benefitted from that in the first of the best-of-three sets. However, Bishop Brossart (9-3 overall) made the necessary adjustments to pull off a 2-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-19) victory over the Lions (4-6). Carnes took over a program that's won three straight SBAAC American Division championships.

"We kind of came out with really low energy," French said. "After that loss in that first set, I said, 'Girls. We have got to pick our energy up. We've got to make adjustments to control the ball on our side and then force them to make errors, which is what they came out doing."

That energy started with the strong first passes. [player_tooltip player_id='587827' first='Grace' last='Frommeyer'] led the way there along with [player_tooltip player_id='727153' first='Payton' last='Marshall']. Junior setter [player_tooltip player_id='484451' first='Aubrey' last='Rebholz'] and freshman [player_tooltip player_id='885299' first='Evelyn' last='Laker'] had a strong all-around games. Junior 6-2 middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='515259' first='Callie' last='Ritter'] once again used her size to dominate the middle and [player_tooltip player_id='832519' first='Hailey' last='Heitker'] gave the Mustangs balance. The likes of [player_tooltip player_id='732580' first='Leah' last='Robinson'], Claire Decker, Madison Dozier, [player_tooltip player_id='885509' first='Emma' last='Sheanshang'] did a lot of little things to help Brossart win.

New Richmond played hard the entire game despite a mismatch against Ritter at the net. Senior right side hitter [player_tooltip player_id='885433' first='Lillian' last='Fite'] and senior hitter [player_tooltip player_id='813025' first='Ellie' last='Walden'] returned after making the first and second all-SBAAC American Division teams last year. Senior setter Leah Riley also made the second team.

Both teams play again Thursday. Bishop Brossart hosts Harrison County at 7 p.m. with New Richmond hosting Clinton-Massie at 6:30 p.m.

Laker (pictured) is one of two freshmen in the starting lineup for the Mustangs, but is well ahead of her time. Laker has displayed a lot of versatility in her young career. Laker hits from all six spots on the floor, Her accuracy from the back row is off the charts. Laker also makes the simple passes and kept New Richmond out of rhythm with sound line drive serves. Laker said hitting from the back row gives Rebholz a good setting option when she can't get balls to the front row hitters.

Rebholz has used her experience to turn into a warrior setting the ball for the Mustangs. Rebholz continues to make great decisions, involving a number of hitters. She sets hitters at the peak of their jumps to keep balls away from blockers. Rebholz also makes good first touches and sound serves. Her setovers are not as deceptive as the team would like, but they are headed in a good direction. Rebholz said she tries to stay aware of which opponents are on the other side of the net and where opponents hit balls then makes best decisions from that point.

Frommeyer had a huge role helping the Mustangs win the non-region battle against New Richmond. Balls appeared headed to the floor, but Frommeyer came out of nowhere, squared her arms up to the balls and made sound under control passes to keep plays alive. Frommeyer makes a number of things happen out of system. She made a number of quality bump sets when the Mustangs were out of system. Frommeyer said she initially feels anxious seeing balls go short, but takes an all or nothing approach hustling to the ball. Frommeyer said when a teammate kills balls after a save like that, it gives her more energy for the rest of the game.

Ritter has gone from a good hitter to a dominant one and more than did it again on her 16th Birthday. Ritter plays like she owns the net consistently putting balls down. She pounds down overpassed balls. Ritter deposits short and long sets to different parts of the court. Ritter makes quick adjustments while in the air to angle balls away from defenders.

Fite made a number of sound hits when the Lions were in system, especially on her crosses. Fite played middle blocker an an all-conference player last year, but has also turned into a strong pin hitter this year. New Richmond head coach Jessica Carnes commended Fite for her ability to adjust and turn into an asset on the outside.
