What Coaches Notice Before The Ball Hits The Floor

They happen in the footwork leading to the ball, the communication before contact, the ability to read information early, and the decisions athletes make when the play is still developing.   Throughout a college camp, I found myself writing down many of the same habits. Athletes who kept their feet in motion. Setters who tracked the platform before making a decision. Liberos who framed the ball to target. Middles who opened early to the setter and created options at the net.   These athletes consistently demonstrated the details that help teams run cleaner offenses and create better outcomes over the course of a match.    Kendall Stark consistently created offensive options through her footwork and decision-making. She moved efficiently to the ball, delivered clean sets, and showed strong eye sequencing throughout the college camp. Rather than predetermining where the ball was going, she appeared to process information early and distribute based on what the play required.   ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     Sydney Rincon's stood out immediately. She consistently delivered a hittable ball and showed major growth in her decision-making. Her quick wrists and ability to stay balanced helped her keep the offense flowing, while her choices became increasingly efficient as the session progressed.   ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     Victoria Keller played with her feet in motion and maintained strong communication with both passers and hitters. She consistently pushed the ball to the outside with accuracy and demonstrated continued improvement throughout the camp. Her ability to connect with teammates and manage the flow of the offense was noticeable.   ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     Riley Stringer did an excellent job tracking the pass and understanding her options before contact. She stayed active with her feet, watched the ball from platform to target, and delivered based on the situation in front of her. She listened to her passers, kept her feet moving, and consistently made smart choices with the ball. Her ability to process information quickly allowed her to create quality opportunities for her hitters.   ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     Emma Lum Lee's fast footwork and clean hands allowed her to stay connected to every pass. She tracked the ball well and consistently positioned herself to deliver a clean, controlled set. Her quick feet consistently put her in line with the pass, and she rarely appeared stagnant. She stayed engaged throughout each rep and worked to create quality setting opportunities regardless of pass location.   ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     Esme Althouse consistently delivered a hittable ball while maintaining range and tempo throughout the camp. Her hands stayed clean, her footwork remained efficient, and she showed the ability to create quality opportunities for hitters from a variety of situations. She combined technical consistency with a positive presence on the court.   ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     Ava Saffell was one of the more reliable serve receive athletes in attendance. She consistently moved her feet into position and worked to create quality first contact. Her platform discipline allowed setters to operate with more options throughout drills.   ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     Cadence Talaga played with energy and confidence while maintaining strong platform angles. She covered significant ground defensively and repeatedly found ways to keep the ball alive. She showed good hands, understood when her hitters were available, and consistently made decisions that helped the offense operate efficiently. She made solid decisions with first contact and consistently focused on creating quality outcomes for the offense. She worked to establish quality routes, stayed ready for offensive opportunities, and consistently gave her setter an option.
