For a lot of programs, it starts earlier, and for the Class of 2029, that window is closer than it feels.

What connects these six athletes is not one shared skill. It is a pattern of self-directed growth, chasing six-rotation status, adding vertical, staying composed in a loss, done before any coach asked for it. That is exactly what evaluators are looking for when they start building their 2029 boards.

Here are six 2029s putting in the work before the window fully opens.

Natalie Omoruyi leads with energy, and resets her team after every single point, win or lose, because she's decides the next point is the only one that matters. That's not a vague personality trait. It's a repeatable in-game habit, and it showed up exactly when she needed it.

Late in a tight Day 4 AAU match, tied at a tense score, Natalie described demanding the ball from her setter and trusting her own preparation to finish the point. She didn't get the set and hope for the best but she asked for it. That's a subtle but meaningful distinction for a middle blocker who wants to be a go-to weapon rather than a situational one.

Her focus this summer is squarely physical: increasing her vertical and sharpening her closing speed at the block, while training with her high school team at Chaminade to build chemistry against older competition. Off the court, she's involved in Black Student Union and Diversity Leadership at her school, and she describes leadership as setting a standard through action rather than volume, a philosophy that lines up with how she plays.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Reiss Burroughs' AAU tournament came down to a single point: 23-24, her team needing a swing to survive and advance. In the timeout before that rally, she made a decision most players talk themselves out of. She told herself that if she liked the set, she was going to swing as aggressively as she could, no hesitation. She got the set she wanted, trusted the read, and put it away to win the match.

That kind of pre-committed aggression is a real skill, not luck. A lot of hitters wait to see how a swing feels before deciding how hard to commit to it; Reiss made the decision before the ball was even in the air.

She's continuing into high school volleyball this fall with a focus on getting more reps through private lessons, and she's already been recognized academically, landing on her school's academic watchlist.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Olivia Eastburn's background in softball shows up in her volleyball game in a way she's clearly aware of. Her last two steps into a swing and her quick arm action are things she credits directly to eight years on a diamond. That cross-sport foot speed is part of why she believes coaches notice her first. But her moment at AAUs wasn't about speed. It was about patience: getting dug repeatedly in a long rally, staying in the point instead of forcing something, and finally scoring with a block rather than a kill.

That willingness to win a rally in whatever way it presents itself, rather than needing the highlight swing, is a mark of a hitter who reads the court rather than just attacking it.

Olivia's offseason includes college camps and consistent strength work, but her off-court résumé is just as active. She volunteers with the Lemo Foundation, works camps as a counselor, sits on her school's student leadership council, and recently completed a STEAM-focused motorsports and design camp built specifically for girls.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Nalani Catlin is refreshingly direct about her own development: she's not there yet, and she knows exactly what "there" looks like. Her stated goal is becoming a six-rotation player, and this AAU tournament gave her real evidence that it's within reach. She served, played back row defense, and attacked out of system in matches, chances she says she wouldn't have earned without the extra work she's been putting in outside of scheduled practice.

She's specific about what's already working, too. She feels her strength and power are translating regardless of position, and she credits improved court reading with letting her score using different angles instead of relying on one shot. That's a meaningful shift for a pin hitter, moving from power-reliant to angle-aware. She's already been to college camps at Coast and TStreet, along with SDSU's Elite Prospect Camp and a camp at USD. She credits her family's support as central to who she is, and she's clear that consistency and discipline, not raw talent, are what she believes will ultimately separate her.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

In a long, difficult rally, Valentina Garcia had to make a quick decision off a tough pass, and even though her team lost that match, she stayed calm, kept communicating, and focused only on giving her hitters the best set she could. She didn't need the outcome to validate the growth; she could see it in how she handled the pressure itself.

That's an important trait for a setter to demonstrate: the ability to separate her own performance from the scoreboard. Valentina also plays libero and DS depending on need, and she's equally specific about developing serve receive and court awareness in that role. She describes herself as dependable and coachable, someone who takes feedback and applies it, a combination that tends to matter more to college staffs than any single highlight.

Her focus this summer includes beach volleyball, high school training, and a PrepDig Showcase appearance in Orlando, all aimed at sharpening her consistency and decision-making under pressure.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Abigail Wunderlich credits her hitting range and power to her weightlifting and track for building that power. She can fire a hard cross, a clean line shot, or a sharp cut when the set and timing line up, and she is just as comfortable out of system, using her jump and power to find open floor with a well placed tip or roll shot. Against six foot and taller blockers who do not always give her the swing she wants, she has built an attack with answers for whatever the block takes away.

She describes intensity as something she leads with rather than talks about. She carries a lesson from Coach Chad at USCS close: no one cares what you can do offensively until they show they care enough to play defense hard. She lives that out by diving, running, and digging every ball she can reach, and she believes that standard raises the level of everyone around her. A hitter who can score from multiple spots on the floor and who sets the defensive tone for her team without needing to say a word is exactly the kind of two way threat coaches look for at the pin.

Her summer is full in the best sense. She is training for USA Track and Field Junior Olympics in the final week of July, which means four weeks of two hour plus throwing sessions layered on top of her strength training, along with the occasional camp and beach volleyball for fun and conditioning. She is also taking two college courses at UCSC to strengthen her academic profile and finishing German 2 through BYU.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

If You Enjoyed This Article, Help Us Keep the Momentum Going

🔥 Athletes

Take time to explore the player profiles featured in this article.
