Additional Frosh Top Performers

Earlier this week we highlighted the middle and right side top performers for the frosh. This post highlights the other players who impressed with their performance. In total four players from the Paramount 14 Jaz team (above) who won the American Division in Junior Nationals earned a selection as a top performer in the Frosh Showcase. There could have been more.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Libero/Defensive Specialist</h2>   <figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2026/07/Jemma-Peterson-1.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1008037" style="width:286px;height:auto" /></figure>    Jemma has been playing up for BAVA the past two years. As a libero she moves her feet well, creates a great platform and reads the hitters like a book. She also communicates well when on the court. Her play carried so much consistency she won the Avoli MVP award. This was the first time it was given to a libero. At the next session her BAVA teammate [player_tooltip player_id='781700' first='Gianna' last='Bonnett'] earned the Avoli MVP award at the Stock Up Showcase.   Jemma will attend Crofton this season. No question she will make the varsity and likely start as the libero. All this year she played with high schoolers and shined. She made the Prep Dig 15 U junior national all tournament team as the libero with [player_tooltip player_id='755672' first='Jaylin' last='Park'] of Metro. Even at her still young age she stands out as one of the top liberos in the DMV area. Sometimes she shows a consistency that is boring to watch. An occasional shank would spice things up a bit.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2026/07/Jasmine-Uuganbayer.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1008042" style="width:274px;height:auto" /></figure>    Her last name has a Mongolian derivative to it. It surprised her that I brought that up because she confirmed her name is Mongolian. One of my favorite capital cities is Ulaanbaatar. The two names are very similar.   I thought the selection of top performers was finished until she caught my attention in the six person play. She moves well in the back court shifting easily from her base to her defensive position. Her passing was also smooth and clean. She shows good hustle going after balls. All the traits you like to see in a libero.   Because Virginia Juniors did not qualify for junior nationals they played in AAUs. This was my first real exposure watching her play. Glad to see her stand out.   This coming high school season she will compete for Freedom-South Riding.    <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Setters</h2>   <figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2026/07/Ava-Rinne.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1008047" style="width:265px;height:auto" /></figure>    Ava was the only setter selected as a top performer at the Frosh Showcase. Her enthusiasm as well as her energy on the court was the main reason for her selection. Setters at this age still have a journey to go before they find their polish. This becomes evident at the failures of the quick tempo sets, especially when working with new hitters.   At Junior Nationals Ava earned a spot on the Prep Dig junior national team as a setter with [player_tooltip player_id='1001234' first='Ellen' last='Hong'] and [player_tooltip player_id='768588' first='Eliana' last='Butler']. She sets in the back row but also has the ability to play right side to provide offense in the front row. This coming season she will play for North Stafford.    <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Outsides</h2>   <figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2026/07/Brylee-Kingston.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1008051" style="width:295px;height:auto" /></figure>    Brylee does not have a lot of height, but she jumps well which allows her to put enough velocity on the ball to be effective. Her hits normally land deep but untouched. What helps with her jump is her quick transition. She moves well in transition putting her in a good position to hit.   Brylee also appears to play a little beach. This can enhance the indoor game by improving the jump and quickness once you convert to play on the hard court. It can also motivate you to find empty areas of the court forcing you to develop shots.   Brylee also plays for Virginia Juniors, as does [player_tooltip player_id='965250' first='Jasmine' last='Uuganbayar']. She will compete for Gainesville next year with a long shot possibility playing for varsity as a frosh.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2026/07/Nyla-Mclaurin.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1008052" style="width:268px;height:auto" /></figure>    Nyla earned the MVP award on the junior national American Division all tournament team. Like Brylee her 5'6" height leaves her a bit undersized for a front row player. However, she gets enough elevation in her jump to provide significant offense whether hitting in the front or back row. She is a perfect six rotation player with her consistent passing and defensive play.   Nyla will play for North Stafford this coming season. She may find a lot of success hitting front row at the 14 U Division. At the high school level she will encounter bigger and more formidable blocks. While she does have success using blocks at the younger ages the blocks are better formed at the older ages.   She looks like the type of player that is up for the challenge.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2026/07/Leyla-Landry.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1008203" style="width:272px;height:auto" /></figure>    Not a surprise to see her earn a top performer award. All it took was to watch her pound balls from the hitting line to make it clear that she was the top hitter of this group. Leyla was one of three USAV all tournament team players at this event. [player_tooltip player_id='944759' first='Nyla' last='Mclaurin'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1001180' first='Liana' last='Lipscomb'] were the other two.   Leyla plays a solid six rotations while also standing out as an offensive presence in the front and back row. Her approach jump of 9'6" is much greater than what appears on the [program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] site.   Leyla will attend Paul VI this coming season. They do have an opening on the outside. Hard to believe they have a better replacement on the junior varsity.
