Our preseason all-state series has already covered Class A and Class B, so we’ll keep moving down the line until every group is covered. Naturally, today’s feature brings Class C1 to the forefront.
Paring down these lists isn’t getting any easier.
It’s incredibly difficult for an underclassman to break into these preseason all-state teams. Dolliver has just done it. There’s zero doubt about the worthiness of this Malcolm outside hitter after she piled up 558 kills last season. That led all Class C1 attackers–and Dolliver accomplished this feat as a freshman.
Leeling brings some representation from the Nebraska panhandle. The Sidney outside hitter terminated over four times per set throughout 2022 and brings multi-position experience to the Red Raider lineup. A postseason return is in play as Sidney reclassifies to Class C1.
Sisco made a massive leap in production from her sophomore to junior seasons, warranting her mandatory inclusion on our all-state team. She tallied over five kills per set for Syracuse while playing a fascinating outside-middle hybrid role. Sisco’s adaptability at the net will ensure that her attacking volume remains high.
Kamery is the designated “triple-double machine” for the C1 all-state team. She does it all for Minden. The experienced utility player rotates between hitting and attacking roles, allowing Kamery to pile up stats in every conceivable category. Her massive 2022 kill totals are even more impressive with this multi-position context in mind.
Highlights
Evert has been a ringleader during Gothenburg’s rise to prominence over the past couple of seasons. She averaged four kills per set last season and was equally impactful in floor defense and serve receive. The Swedes will ask a lot of their senior outside hitter.
Time to bring on Nebraska’s 2022 hitting efficiency champion. Wurtz averaged a stunning 0.524 attacking percentage last year, which surpassed all players in the Cornhusker State and dwarfed any numbers in Class C1. The Creighton commit can rotate between outside hitter and middle blocker for DC West, adding a further layer of complexity to teams trying to defend against her.
Highlights
Ervin is another one of these “utility players” who can make her impact in a variety of ways. As an attacker, the Ogallala athlete soared to a 0.327 hitting clip last year. But Ervin also has an extensive background as a setter and can distribute one of the smoothest offenses in the C1 ranks.
Riggert is hoping to bring Pierce back into the championship spotlight. She was a huge factor in getting the Bluejays there last year with a 0.300 attacking percentage on nearly three kills per set. It’s also worth watching whether Riggert spends most of her time on the pin or in the middle. She’ll excel either way.
Highlights
We’re going back-to-back with Pierce. Wachholtz put away almost 400 total kills last year and build off a sophomore season that was equally impressive. The Bluejays are clearly dialed in and ready to take the next step toward C1 glory.
We had to get some Kearney Catholic representation in the mix, and there are plenty of Stars who will be in the postseason running by the end of the year. Carnes was one of C1’s most terminal middle blockers in 2022 while compiling over three kills per set from that position. Ball control will also be a strength for Kearney Catholic, allowing Carnes to maximize her attempts as a senior.
You could argue that Maser was Class C1’s MVP last year. She guided the Grand Island Central Catholic offense to a state title while piling up well over ten assists per set in the process. Maser has just given her collegiate pledge to Drake and will have one more opportunity to shine on Nebraska’s biggest prep stage.
Feeney is another one of Class C1’s adept distributors who led her team to a state tournament appearance last year. The rising junior averaged nine assists per set for Adams Central in 2022 and also demonstrated her strength in right-back defense. 2023 should offer more of the same.
Highlights
Richeson had a steady hand in one of Class C1’s top offenses last year. Gothenburg’s system thrived behind Richeson’s leadership as the talented setter accumulated almost 900 total helpers as a junior.
Finally, the liberos. Borner has some of the best numbers among her returning backcourt peers in Class C1. She boasted over 14 digs per match with DC West in 2022, and Borner has the distinction of averaging those big numbers for her entire prep career.
Hedman is the anchor to what should be a strong GICC ball control unit this fall. She exceeded 500 digs during GICC’s championship campaign, which was a massive uptick from the year before. Heman’s upward trajectory should continue.
