Results from Last Week of Season – Let the Playoffs Begin

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>For the Virginia area most of the high schools saw their regular season end. The regional playoffs begin next week. Maryland started a week later so still have another week of regular season left. The DC area just chooses the top teams to play in their state championship. Below are some of the big gams from this past week.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Game of the Week - Georgetown Day vs Bullis</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>This match would determine the number one seed in the Independent School League (ISL) championship. For the first time in over a decade it would not be Flint Hill after their upset loss to Potomac School. The Mighty Hoppers beat Flint Hill the previous week to give them their first loss.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Bullis </strong>(18-2) won the opener 25-20. <strong>Georgetown Day</strong> (20-0) would go on to take the next three 25-10, 25-22 and 25-15. In the previous week Georgetown Day had lost the first set to Flint Hill. They then beat them in the next three sets. It appears the Mighty Hoppers need a little warmup to get their jump a hopping.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='437985' first='Zora' last='Dimbo'] </strong>led the way with her 15 kills. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='472234' first='Tessa' last='Fergusson']</strong> produced six blocks in the middle which in the long run impacted the Bulldogs offense. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='292644' first='Caycee' last='Chhum']</strong> distributed 32 assists. As a whole the Hoppers clogged up the net with nine blocks. As a result, the Bulldogs hit at only .185 percent. Their most effective hitter was <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='206729' first='Megan' last='Phan']</strong>, who tallied three kills in four attempts with her setter dumps. The Colonels won the last two sets 26-24 and 15-8 to earn the victory. <strong> [player_tooltip player_id='181302' first='Kennedy' last='Spaid'] </strong>took 52 swings to produce 30 kills. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='320815' first='Tenley' last='Mattison']</strong> roofed five attempted kills. <strong>Kylie Plumb</strong> dished out 33 assists with 13 digs on defense.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Potomac Schoo</strong>l (11-2) pulled out their biggest win in more than a decade, pulling off a reverse sweep in their win over <strong>Flint Hill </strong>(17-4). They took the last three sets 25-21, 25-17 and 15-11. The Huskies <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='181303' first='Isabelle' last='Bardin']</strong> managed 21 kills but the rest of the team hit .028 percent in the loss. As a result of the win Potomac School will play Episcopal in the first round of the ISL playoff. Later in the week Potomac School would sweep Virginia Academy (21-5). They won the last two sets by the same convincing score of 25-12.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In a minor upset <strong>Resevoir</strong> (11-3) downed <strong>Broadneck </strong>(13-3) in four. Broadneck won the opener 25-22 but lost the next three.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Glenelg</strong> (19-2) beat <strong>Severna Park </strong>(10-5) in four. The Gladiators dominated the first two sets 25-12 before losing the third 25-18. They bounced back to win the fourth set 25-19. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='346815' first='Isard' last='Bernades']</strong> led the way for the Gladiators with her 12 kills. [player_tooltip player_id='529251' first='Jessica' last='Li'] completed a triple double with ten aces, 13 digs and 25 assists. On Monday they get a rematch with undefeated Howard for the County championship.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>North Hagerstown</strong> (11-2) bounded past <strong>Boonsboro</strong> (10-3) in five. The Hubs won the fifth set 15-10.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The <strong>Queen Anne's County Lions</strong> (15-0) remained undefeated with a four set victory over <strong>Kent Island</strong> (13-3). The Lions got 18 kills from <strong>Biance Baker</strong> and 15 kills and seven blocks from <strong>Sydney Pinder</strong>. <strong> Emerson Stewart</strong> served up eight aces and an amazing 41 points serving. <strong>Jory Long </strong>contributed 42 assists. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='720080' first='Miller' last='Grimes']</strong> finished off with 14 kills to lead the <strong>Covenant </strong>(22-1) to a sweep over <strong>Miller School of Albermarle</strong>. Miller leads all of Virginia in hitting percentage at .506.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Loudoun County</strong> (17-1) downed <strong>Heritage (</strong>8-12) in four. Good defense and kills by <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='377334' first='Josephine' last='Seekford']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='523337' first='Ana' last='Smithson']</strong> finished the 25-5 rout. Next year the position should be hers to fill. Got my first opportunity to watch her play in the last set against Heritage. She has some velocity on her serves but they lack accuracy. In16 serves she has scored 10 points with three errors. In a small sample size that means less than 20% of her serves result in a side out. In the fourth set against Heritage she finished with at least two kills. Right side <strong>Kasey Holland </strong>delivered some key hits as well for the Pride. The Captains coach did not like the play of her team in the third set, placed all her starters on the bench to talk to them while a whole new team came out to play the fourth set. The game was tight all the way until a <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='485504' first='Sydney' last='Miller']</strong> middle hit tied the game at 16-16. <strong>Brook LaRue</strong> blocked an overset to extend that lead to 18-16. <strong>Madeline White</strong> served up an ace to make it 19-16 and a <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='279856' first='Kayla' last='Luther']</strong> kill 20-16. For the Knights this becomes their fourth consecutive loss while facing a tough schedule. This is a good taste of revenge from earlier in the season when Lord Botetourt swept the Blue Demons to give them their first loss of the season. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>G<strong>ainesville</strong> narrowly escaped past <strong>Patriot </strong>(14-10) in four. Gainesville won the first and fourth set by two points 27-25 and 25-23. No set was decided by more than four points. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Richard Mongomery </strong>(17-1) struggled in the first two sets before finishing off <strong>Churchill</strong> pretty easily in the third and fourth sets, The Rockets won the first set 29-27, but Churchill bounced back to win the second 25-23. The third and fourth sets were won comfortably by the Rocket 25-17 and 25-12. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='412056' first='Elizabeth' last='Mitchell']</strong> led with 16 kills while also contributing 5 aces. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='309030' first='Corinne' last='Howard']</strong> provided 12 kills and four blocks. The Rockets only loss of the season came against them at the Battle of Bethesda tournament. In the opener the Barons were on fire winning 25-9. The Rockets recovered to win the next two, but the Barons took it to a fifth set with a 25-22 win in the fourth set. The Rockets were able to finish the Barons off in the fifth set 15-11.
