Class 6

Region 6D - Chantilly swept McLean in the first round with [player_tooltip player_id='181297' first='Lameen' last='Mambu'] (10) and [player_tooltip player_id='455102' first='Erin' last='Green'] (9) combining for 19 kills. [player_tooltip player_id='245601' first='Gabrielle' last='Nelson'] contributed five kills with a team leading three blocks. George Marshall got past Westfield in four.

Langley pulled a sweep over Centerville while James Madison did the same to Herndon. For Madison [player_tooltip player_id='377336' first='Callie' last='Agniel'] led the team in kills with ten while [player_tooltip player_id='265167' first='Laila' last='Chadwick'] put on the libero jersey to lead the team in digs with 13. [player_tooltip player_id='455177' first='Briana' last='Vo'] got credit for 26 assists. Last year Langley only lost three matches and all of them were against Madison. This is the first time the schools will play this year.

Last year as a frosh Olivia played right side. She also plays right side for Metro. This year West Potomac has made her a left side to increase her offensive opportunities.

At 6'2' Olivia can bring some height to the left side. She was banging balls from the front row as well as the back row. There are still minor issues such as getting that consistent arm extension and whip through the zone. That may come with time. With Metro she may still see a return to the right side but her high school play adds some diversity to her game.

Region 6C - The first match saw Falls Church play Alexandria City. Falls Church upset a West Potomac team in five to get to the semi-finals. Down two games to one the Jaguars pulled out the fourth set 26-24. The Wolverines were up 24-22 when a serving error gave the ball back to the Jaguars, now only down by one. Middle [player_tooltip player_id='664148' first='Ainsley' last='Phillips'] tied it with a kill from the middle and an ace serve by Anna Riedel gave the Jaguars a 25-24 lead. A Wolverine hitting error sent it into a fifth game.

Middles [player_tooltip player_id='664148' first='Ainsley' last='Phillips'] and [player_tooltip player_id='664150' first='Nalani' last='Applehans'] took charge in the fifth set, with [player_tooltip player_id='248668' first='Eliana' last='Tamayo'] setting a 5/1 and contributing with her all around play. Falls Church took the fifth set 15-8. [player_tooltip player_id='469197' first='Olivia' last='Garey'] starred for the Wolverines hitting from the left side.

Alexandria City proved too much for Falls Church in the semi-finals. The Jaguars surprised the Titans in the first set 26-24. [player_tooltip player_id='664150' first='Nalani' last='Applehans'] contributed four kills and a block early and [player_tooltip player_id='664148' first='Ainsley' last='Phillips'] pounded a ball to the floor to tie the game 24-24. Ainsley followed with a key block to give the Jaguars a 25-24 lead and Nora Cunningham finished it off with an ace that rolled off the net onto the floor untouched for the game winner.

The Titans won the next three rather convincingly 25-13, 25-16 and 25-15. Left side [player_tooltip player_id='464589' first='Julia' last='Kelly'] and middle Kalina Janevski led the offensive barrage with [player_tooltip player_id='374419' first='Alicia' last='Randall'] setting a 5/1.

Last year when setting as a frosh there was some hesitancy in her game. Despite that she led the Spartans to their first state playoff appearance in school history. This year she brings a quiet confidence to her game. She also has grown to 5'11". West Springfield has benefitted from this improvement winning 29 of their 30 matches this year. This year getting past the first round in states is their next objective.

Anna leads the team in serving aces, ranks second in digs and dishes out sets to all of her hitters. While [player_tooltip player_id='181243' first='Evelyn' last='Jurden'] remains her primary target Anna keeps things honest by setting others. When she dumps the ball her accuracy rate is close to 60 percent.

When club season starts [program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] will play her a year up with the 17 team.

In the other semi-final match West Springfield overpowered Woodson, sweeping them in three. While [player_tooltip player_id='181243' first='Evelyn' last='Jurden'] (24 kills) led the charge with her kills from the back row and front row the Spartans have a solid lineup around her. Setter [player_tooltip player_id='438046' first='Anna' last='Dierks'] (34 assists) has really matured as a setter. If you watch her run a 5/1 she does not look like a sophomore. She has also grown to 5'11" making her a threat in the front row ranking fourth on the team in blocking.

Another sophomore that impressed is 6'3" middle [player_tooltip player_id='720348' first='Milena' last='Kibret'] who finished second on the team in kills with seven. With her height she can put the ball down in warmups. She now needs to get used to the randomness of the game, improving on her transition to the ball. Watching the 5'8" middle Gracie Swisher play the position is a starter. Gracie leads the team in blocks despite her size. Another solid hitter is left side [player_tooltip player_id='354086' first='Nina' last='Schweigert'] who can create problems for passers with her jump spin serve. She also provides a solid option for Anna on the left side.

Woodson was led by setter [player_tooltip player_id='204152' first='Sofie' last='Ferrell']. The Cavaliers lost their two left sides, one to graduation and the other to Oklahoma. Carleigh Orr did a nice job with six kills from the left side. You know the offense is struggling when their 5/1 setter can only accumulate 13 assists.

Both Alexandria City and West Springfield will advance to States.

Mountain View is having a solid year. They certainly have a talented team with [player_tooltip player_id='435745' first='Alyssa' last='Kumah'], [player_tooltip player_id='523343' first='Elsie' last='Afful'] and [player_tooltip player_id='778715' first='Kayla' last='Cotton'] providing the offense. However, someone has to get them the ball to generate that offense. That someone has been [player_tooltip player_id='397414' first='Isabella' last='Park'].

She serves well, leading the team in aces, plays defense as her ranking second in digs attests and controls the offense. However, her biggest improvement has been getting the hitters the ball to make an impact.

Region 5B - Menchville pulled sweeps over King's Fork and Bethel. Maury swept Warwick in the opening round of the Region then took five to overcome Woodside, Maury had to win the last two sets to advance, 25-23 and 15-11. Menchville and Maury have earned a spot in the State bracket.

Region 5A - First Colonial lost the first set to Princess Anne 25-20 then took the next three 25-15, 25-19 and 25-17. Kellam swept past Hickory and in a mild upset beat Ocean Lakes in five. The Knights had faced Ocean Lakes twice during the regular season but lost both, the second match in five. Kellam this time beat Ocean Lakes in five, winning the fifth set 15-11. [player_tooltip player_id='484970' first='Sofia' last='Barnes'] led the team with 24 kills while [player_tooltip player_id='484751' first='Riley' last='Erwin'] (13) and [player_tooltip player_id='246936' first='Audriana' last='Neal'] (12) teamed for 25. Riley also earned a triple double with her 13 digs and 25 assists while also leading the team in blocks with five. Not a bad days work for a setter.

Kellam and First Colonial now earn an appearance in States.

Class 4
