Five Setters to Watch at the Katy-Cypress Tournament

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The high school volleyball season is about to start in Texas and, in just a few more days, weekday evenings in every corner of the Lone Star State will be filled with exciting matches, where the most talented prospects of the state will be able to compete and show what they are about.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The first weeks of the new season are typically filled with tournaments and one of the biggest and most competitive of them is set to take place this week. The Katy-Cypress Tournament reunites the top teams from two of the most competitive districts in the Houston area and beyond, attracting high school programs from other regions, such as Austin and San Antonio.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>This year's edition of the tournament will feature as many as 48 varsity programs, which will compete between Thursday and Saturday in eight high school campuses in the area. Used to competing at the highest level with her club team [program_tooltip program_id='510661' first='Houston' last='Skyline'], the senior setter is one of the pillars of the team, keeping their offense smooth and efficient. Extremely technical, she is very accurate with her locations when she jump sets and is known for her well-balanced and intelligent distribution. A standout at the club level, Boatman steadily worked her way up in Bridgeland's hierarchy, becoming the team's starting setter in her junior year. Now a senior, she'll lead the team with her solid all-around game and superior technical skills. Boatman has superior ball-handling skills and tends to be creative with her distribution when in system, moving hitters around to put them in the best possible position to score. A starter for them since her freshman season, she's become more and more important for the team, making a huge impact on their performance from the setter position. Since her first season, Welker-Brown has clearly shown she has the physical and technical tools to develop into an elite setter, and that has become even more evident as she added more experience to her play. A six-footer, she has great setting hands and is very intelligent with her decision-making, keeping the team's offense in a good rhythm. The centerpiece in the team's game, the setter connects very well with each of her hitters and is capable of getting the best of each of them with her intelligent distribution. A tall setter, Knipling is an elite player at the net, blocking well, remaining aggressive with her setter dumps and taking on hitting duties when needed. Despite being a freshman, I expect her to get significant playing time this season, from which she can benefit to continue improving her game. Being a tall and technical setter, Ortmeier starts from a very good spot to evolve into an elite playmaker.
