Centerville Wins Crossroads Tourney, Other Results from Last Week

Centerville Won the Crossroads Tournament at Justice High School this past weekend. There were also some big results in conference battles last week. All the details provided below. But first, the Crossroads.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Centerville Wildcats</h2>   <figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2025/06/70-Sophia-Jenkins.jpg?w=858" alt="" class="wp-image-781894" style="width:270px;height:auto" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">[player_tooltip player_id='734791' first='Sophia' last='Jenkins']</figcaption></figure>   Centerville came into the tournament with a two game losing streak after losses to conference opponents South Lakes and Westfield. They got placed in a competitive pool in which every match went three except one. That was the match in which Centerville swept Robinson. They were the only team to finish undefeated in their pool. That pool consisted of John Paul, Meridian, Robinson and Centerville.   Their two middles, junior [player_tooltip player_id='734791' first='Sophia' last='Jenkins'] and senior [player_tooltip player_id='887994' first='Amara' last='Orakwue'] led the charge. [player_tooltip player_id='734791' first='Sophia' last='Jenkins'] ranks number 167 in our class of 2027 while Amare is not ranked. Both stand 5'10. What impresses about Sophia is her athleticism. She plays beyond what a normal middle plays, setting up in serve receive and hitting outside when receiving serve. When playing defense she also is not afraid to crash to the floor to keep a rally alive.   In their last match against John Paul the Great they lost the opening set 25-21. If they wanted to finish on top in their pool they needed to win the match. Sophia shined in the second set with four blocks, three kills, including a back row attack and two service aces as they routed John Paul the Great 25-14. In the third set a left side kill from [player_tooltip player_id='734791' first='Sophia' last='Jenkins'] started them off with a 5-4 lead (games started at 4-4). She also contributed two blocks in a 6 point run that moved them ahead 10-4. They went on to win 15-9.   <figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2024/12/18-Charity-Morris.jpg?w=990" alt="" class="wp-image-729626" style="width:336px;height:auto" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">[player_tooltip player_id='541351' first='Charity' last='Morris']</figcaption></figure>   Libero [player_tooltip player_id='541351' first='Charity' last='Morris'] played well in the tournament as did frosh [player_tooltip player_id='887998' first='Jenevieve' last='Crowder']. The key to winning tournaments like this is with strong defense. With the two of them covering the back row they were able to survive the longer rallies. Charity made an spectacular pancake dig to keep one rally alive. Charity ranks at number 161 in the class of 2027 after showcasing her skills at our Prep Dig showcase last December in Baltimore. It was good to see her showcase those skills in a game. Jenevieve anticipates well in the back row. I love her intensity. After a couple years I suspect she will take over the libero role for the Wildcats.   Once in the playoffs Centerville handled Justice pretty easily, winning 25-9, 25-18. In the finals they again battled with Meridian. Pool play saw the Wildcats handle them in three. In the first set they actually fell behind 16-18. Unfortunately for Meridian they fell victim to a string of hitting errors until a kill by right side Tara Gosney ended the first set 25-22. Tara actually came into the tournament leading the team in kills, though the stats are sparse.   Centerville also got behind early in the second set 2-0, but then steamrolled the rest of the set. [player_tooltip player_id='754926' first='Caroline' last='Chubb'] contributed four kills and an ace in the 25-16 rout. Caroline appears at number 191 in our rankings.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Meridian Mustangs</h2>   The Meridian JV team won their pool by going undefeated. Four of their six victories were by two points, including a 27-25, 25-23 sweep over second place Justice, who finished 2-1. The varsity finished 1-2 in the much stronger second pool. That put them in a three way tie for second place. The tie breaker rule was most points scored. The Meridian varsity won that stat to advance to the gold   In an odd set of circumstances for the start of playoffs the second place Maridian varsity had to do battle against the first place Meridian junior varsity. Rock Ridge dropped out of the tournament giving the Meridian JV this opportunity to play. In pool play they swept past the varsity teams Potomac, Justice and Gar-Field. A father was torn as to who to root for since the oldest daughter Hannah Rosenbusch set for varsity while the younger sister Ana Rosenbusch also sets for the junior varsity. Fortunately for him Ana left before the playoffs to celebrate a birthday celebration.   The varsity underestimated the power of the junior varsity. While many of the starters rested the first set the varsity held a slim lead. The junior varsity kept it close and as an underdog that can create opportunities. After a missed serve and four consecutive hitting errors the JV came through with a 25-23 win. Many of the starters returned to play the last two sets resulting in rather easy 25-10 and 15-5 wins. The laughter and joking that occurred in the first set disappeared.   For the Meridian varsity the players who stood out most were middle [player_tooltip player_id='746620' first='Sahana' last='Cushman'] and left side [player_tooltip player_id='530363' first='Adelyn' last='Pye']. At 6'1" Sahana is a presence in the middle with her blocking and ability to hit around or over the opponent's middle block creates a big advantage. She also brings the athleticism to move quickly along the net. She finished the third set against Robinson with a clutch block in their 15-13 match win. Adelyn is a solid six rotation player that possesses all the basic skills. Not a player who will dominate a game but she will win games for you with her steady play. She ranks at number 65 in our class of 2027 while Sahana ranks at 69 in our class of 2028.   [player_tooltip player_id='888041' first='Sophia' last='Chan'] played a solid libero, covering the court with some dolphin dives to the floor. Though her serve was a little inconsistent it got points when it found the court. She also smacked a hard down ball kill deep into the corner, a rare event for a libero to get a kill.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Other Players Who Stood Out</h2>   A number of players from Robinson impressed. [player_tooltip player_id='810691' first='Allison' last='Nemets'] played a solid middle and brings decent length to the position. Although she lists at 5'9" to 5'10" she brings good extension with her arms for the block and hits the middle well. [player_tooltip player_id='888046' first='Jacqueline' last='Potter'] plays the other middle. She brings the enthusiastic cheers of a frosh after a kill. She still has a lot to learn about the position but she brings some skills that can be built on. [player_tooltip player_id='801817' first='Gillian' last='Cook'] played a solid libero while acting as team captain on the court.   John Paul had a couple players who stood out. Jasmine Clark blocked a number of balls playing middle, even outmuscling other middles during jousts. At 5'9" she may be a little undersized for the position, but she played it well. Samantha Cook buried a number of sets from the left side. She appeared to be their offensive outlet.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Some Highlighted Matches from Last Week</h2>   <figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2025/06/Groshek-rotated-crop-2800x1839-1758147839.jpg?w=800" alt="" class="wp-image-887233" style="width:285px;height:auto" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">[player_tooltip player_id='749642' first='Sophia' last='Groshek']</figcaption></figure>   Annapolis Area Christian displayed their power with a dominating sweep over a strong Arundel team. The Wildcats did not reach 20 points in the sweep. The frosh dup of [player_tooltip player_id='748513' first='Scarlett' last='Netherton'] (16) and [player_tooltip player_id='753070' first='Avery' last='Lettinga'] (10) combined for 26 kills while another frosh, right side [player_tooltip player_id='749642' first='Sophia' last='Groshek'] contributed 9 kills along with 4 service aces. Scarlett actually put together a triple double of sorts with her 16 kills, ten points serving and 10 digs.   Churchill needed to win the last two sets 25-23 and 15-8 to take down Urbana in five. The Bulldogs produced 35 kills from the trio of [player_tooltip player_id='438053' first='Lucille' last='Deraleau'] (13), [player_tooltip player_id='465322' first='Siyena' last='Fitsum'] (12) and frosh [player_tooltip player_id='762829' first='Angela' last='Zhang'] (10). The loss was the second for Urbana while Churchill improved to 5-4.   Georgetown Day showed their dominance in the Independent School League (ISL) by sweeping Flint Hill. The Huskies did not score more than 17 points in the sweep. Flint Hill now drops to 2-5 for the season. [player_tooltip player_id='374420' first='Sadie' last='Fester'] strung together 31 assists and 18 digs. She also put together 12 points serving for a triple double. The Bullis setter from last year [player_tooltip player_id='206729' first='Megan' last='Phan'] (5) and defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='238860' first='Mia' last='Fornasiero'] (7) led their team in kills with 12 combined.   Collegiate upset St. Catherines in five, [player_tooltip player_id='812540' first='Clare' last='Aman'] leading the way with 10 kills. St. Catherines is working in two frosh setters with [player_tooltip player_id='888288' first='Lila' last='Cross'] stringing together 26 assists and [player_tooltip player_id='888289' first='Emmerson' last='Croft'] adding 13 assists. [player_tooltip player_id='517814' first='Ashley' last='Grace Johnstone'] scooped up 31 digs for Collegiate while [player_tooltip player_id='322106' first='Bailey' last='Loving'] picked up 27.   Annandale swept past Hayfield to improve to 6-2. Later this week we will have a story on Annandale.   Thomas Jefferson beat Lewis in five with frosh [player_tooltip player_id='888291' first='Kelsey' last='Routman'] standing out with 13 kills, 8 aces and 18 digs. Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='630678' first='Iris' last='Jin'] put together 39 assists to improve TJ yo 5-1 in their region but 5-5 overall.   It took five sets but James Wood overcame Handley, winning the fifth set 15-12. They had to achieve a reverse sweep to capture the victory. [player_tooltip player_id='181302' first='Kennedy' last='Spaid'] (29) and [player_tooltip player_id='181280' first='Brenna' last='Corbin'] (21) combined for 50 kills in the win. [player_tooltip player_id='621440' first='Kylee' last='Plumb'] finished with 41 assists.   It took Broadneck five sets to take down Severna Park. [player_tooltip player_id='346815' first='Isard' last='Bernades'] also added 12 kills for Glenelg. [player_tooltip player_id='529251' first='Jessica' last='Li'] contributed 20 digs with 41 assists. Chika also dug up 20 balls for Guilford Park.   Paul VI took down St. Johns in four with [player_tooltip player_id='357402' first='Coco' last='Lewis'] putting together 24 kills with 12 digs.   South Lakes swept past Oakton, winning the first set 25-9. The Dolphins were led by the 11 kills from [player_tooltip player_id='437448' first='Eva' last='Collingham']. Oakton is playing without [player_tooltip player_id='238857' first='Julie' last='Xu'], who may be out for the year. Later in the week we will have a story on South Lakes.   West Springfield overpowered Fairfax in three to remain undefeated at 8-0. Fairfax dropped to 5-3 but we will have a strory about them later this week.   It took five before Kettle Run could dispose of Meridian. They had to win the last two sets 25-17, 15-4 to walk away with the victory.   James Madison defeated Flint Hill in four, [player_tooltip player_id='265167' first='Laila' last='Chadwick'] leading the charge with 15 kills and 15 digs.   Holy Cross showed Paul Vi that a team still needed to get past the Tartans to win the WCAC. [player_tooltip player_id='622282' first='Emerson' last='Wolfe'] led the way with 14 kills. Frosh [player_tooltip player_id='753073' first='Aniston' last='Williams'] tied for the team lead in blocks with three. The last two sets the Tartans won by two 25-23 and 30-28.   On Saturday Howard was able to sweep past all their opponents to win the tournament at Bel Air high school. [player_tooltip player_id='702631' first='McKenna' last='Brown'] led the charge with 30 kills while [player_tooltip player_id='577516' first='Mariska' last='Ordonez'] contributed 25. [player_tooltip player_id='506629' first='Dylann' last='Loggins'] led the team in blocks with 10 while also contributing 20 kills. [player_tooltip player_id='698761' first='Imagine' last='Peltier'] accumulated 76 assists, including firing up 8 aces in one set.
