The last whistle of the season rang through the Xcel Energy Center, and the celebration began. Mayer Lutheran had just completed a dominant performance, sweeping Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (25-17, 25-15, 25-23) to capture the Minnesota Class A State Volleyball Championship — and with it, a second straight state title.

For the Crusaders, this was more than a win. It was a repeat statement of excellence — proof that the standard they've set in Class A volleyball isn't going anywhere.

Setting the Tone Early

Championship matches are often won in the opening minutes, and Mayer Lutheran wasted no time showing they were ready to defend their crown. Setter [player_tooltip player_id='230417' first='Izabelle' last='Keaveny'] took command from the start, running a balanced offense that kept RTR's defense guessing.

Outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='804252' first='Ada' last='Hahn'] came out fearless, attacking seams in the block and finding sharp angles down the line. Outside[player_tooltip player_id='805202' first='Courtney' last='Tuttle'] brought stability, while [player_tooltip player_id='828239' first='Hallie' last='Hunter'] used her quick tempo through the middle to keep the defense honest. By the first timeout, the Crusaders had found their rhythm — the kind of championship rhythm that's hard to stop.

RTR came to battle. Setter [player_tooltip player_id='712088' first='Dru' last='Ellefson'] moved the ball with tempo, giving Paisley and [player_tooltip player_id='455607' first='Sara' last='Thooft'] chances to score against single blocks. Libero [player_tooltip player_id='800636' first='Laken' last='Baartman'] anchored the defense with signature grit, collecting 19 digs and keeping rallies alive.

Still, Mayer Lutheran's serve-receive was airtight.

A Champion's Composure

The second set showed exactly why Mayer Lutheran is back-to-back champions. Their serve pressure pinned RTR out of system, and their transition defense looked effortless. Every dig turned into a scoring opportunity.

[player_tooltip player_id='229011' first='Clara' last='Keaveny'] was phenomenal in the backcourt, reading the game with poise and tallying 24 digs, while Hahn added another 18 from the back row. Together, they frustrated hitters and erased would-be points.

Up front, Courtney Tuttle started to take over. Her blend of power and finesse created mismatches on the pin, and [player_tooltip player_id='828239' first='Hallie' last='Hunter']'s presence in the middle added balance. Setter [player_tooltip player_id='230417' first='Izabelle' last='Keaveny'] distributed the ball with confidence, finishing the match with 26 assists, each one feeding into Mayer Lutheran's relentless rhythm.

RTR fought to stay in it. Dru Ellefson and Brezlyn Buchert combined for 24 assists, trying to stretch the Crusaders' block, while Laken Baartman's passing kept her team in rallies. But Mayer Lutheran's system was simply too clean. With every transition play, the defending champs looked more in control. They closed out the set 25-15, one step away from repeating history.

Every play showed why Mayer Lutheran's culture of composure sets them apart. They never panicked — they executed.

Final score: 25-23, Mayer Lutheran 3, RTR 0.

Repeat Champions, Relentless Standard

Winning one state title takes talent. Winning two in a row takes something deeper — unity, chemistry, and trust.

Mayer Lutheran's stat line tells the story of a team that plays for each other:

There's no single superstar. Instead, the Crusaders embody balance — every rotation dangerous, every rally controlled. Their offense is unpredictable, their defense airtight, and their culture unshakable.

This repeat title cements Mayer Lutheran as one of the top Class A programs in Minnesota volleyball history. It's not just that they win — it's how they win. System-first volleyball, high IQ play, and relentless focus from the first serve to the final whistle.

RTR's Resilient Run

For Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, this run to the state title match caps a season filled with resilience and pride. The Knights played fearless volleyball, backed by a team-first mentality that carried them through a tough section and into championship territory.

Baartman's 19 digs, Paisley Thooft's 9 kills, and [player_tooltip player_id='455607' first='Sara' last='Thooft']'s 7 showed why RTR remains a program built on grit. Ellefson (13 assists) and Buchert (11 assists) worked tirelessly to spread the ball and find rhythm against one of the state's best defenses.

They may not have taken the trophy home this year, but they proved they belong on Minnesota's biggest stage — and with their returning core, RTR will remain a force.

Mayer Lutheran volleyball has built a dynasty on fundamentals and fearlessness. And once again, they finish the season exactly where they started it — on top.
