Last week, PrepDig released the updated 2027 California Rankings. Now it's time to look underneath them.

Statistics never tell the whole story, and this list proves it. One of the top setters in the country plays at a school that doesn't report stats at all. Some of these athletes are putting up historic volume. Others are getting more efficient every single season. Several have done their best work at Durango and the Nike TOC, where the competition is the deepest.

What the numbers do reveal are habits. Who is getting better. Who carries the load. Who impacts every phase of the match. Here is what the data says about California's top 10 in the 2027 class.

All statistics are sourced from MaxPreps and entered by coaches through the MaxPreps Team Admin system. Stats published as of October 7, 2026. Senior season stats are still being updated.

Kendall Omoruyi has spent four varsity seasons proving that size is only the starting point. Her numbers tell a story of refinement. Her efficiency has climbed in each of the last three seasons at Sierra Canyon. As a senior, she is hitting .427, a level most middles never reach.

That kind of climb does not happen by accident. It comes from better shot selection, cleaner timing with her setter, and a growing understanding of where the open court lives.

She is far more than an attacker. With 328 career blocks, she makes the net a problem for every opponent on the schedule. I watched her at the Durango Fall Classic, where she dominated at the net with her blocking. When hitters start adjusting to you before the ball is even set, you are controlling the match.

She operates with the steadiness of a player who knows exactly who she is. Her spot on the Watch List for AVCA Girls High School Player of the Year reflects that. Nebraska is getting a middle who arrives polished and is still trending upward.

Westley Matavao plays like the player everyone in the gym is watching, because she usually is. She has nearly 1,000 career kills at Mater Dei. The more telling number sits on the other side of the ball. Her 730 career digs show a six-rotation outside who never leaves the floor and never stops competing.

She carries a heavy offensive load and still delivers when it matters most. I watched her win back-to-back MVP honors at the Durango Fall Classic in 2025 and 2026. Then I saw her help Mater Dei win the Nike TOC championship. Repeating as MVP at an event like Durango is about consistency more than talent. Opponents know the ball is coming to her, and she still finds a way.

She brings a complete skill set. She has terminal offense, passes and defends at a high level, and her serve has produced 113 career aces. She is also on the Watch List for AVCA Girls High School Player of the Year.

Westley has been a constant for a Mater Dei program sitting at 33-1. That kind of reliability is exactly what UCLA will be counting on in the Big Ten.

Ireland Real's senior season already has a signature moment. On September 30, Santa Margarita handed Mater Dei its first loss of the year, winning 3-1 in a match where two sets were decided by two points. Matches like that are won by players willing to take the big swings late. Ireland dominated, and Mater Dei had no answer.

That performance did not come out of nowhere. As a sophomore, she carried a massive load with 543 kills and more than four kills per set. She has the size of a 6-foot-4 pin and the volume history of a go-to outside. That combination is rare.

Her senior numbers show a player who is playing efficient, aggressive volleyball, with nearly four kills per set. Add 107 career blocks and 82 aces, and she impacts every phase of the match.

She continues to develop, and her ceiling is still rising. Texas is getting an attacker who shows up in big moments. Her spot on the Watch List for AVCA Girls High School Player of the Year says the rest of the country is noticing too.

Piper Chylinski is the perfect reminder that statistics are only one piece of the puzzle. Mayfield does not report stats to MaxPreps, so there is no stat line to break down. What she does have is a résumé that speaks the language college coaches trust.

She has been selected to the National Team Development Program at the U16, U17 and U18 levels. Three straight NTDP selections means national evaluators have watched her train, compete and process the game at the highest youth level, year after year. Setters earn that kind of repeat trust through decision-making, tempo control and composure. Highlight plays do not earn it.

She has also earned a bronze medal at Girls Junior Nationals, and she will be suiting up for City. At 6-foot-3, she gives her hitters a high release point and a block presence most setters cannot offer.

TCU is getting a setter who has already been tested on national stages. She does not need a stat page to prove where she belongs.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

McKenna McIntosh has been producing at a high level since the day she arrived at Sierra Canyon. She opened her career with more than 400 kills as a freshman. As a sophomore, she pushed past 480 while hitting at an elite clip. Very few players carry that kind of offensive load that early.

What separates her now is everything she does beyond the kill. Her 904 career digs show an outside hitter who embraces passing and defense. When I watched her at the Durango Fall Classic, she was dominant on the outside, but her defense stood out even more. That is the part of her game that travels directly to the college level.

She plays with a complete game that makes coaching decisions easy. With 1,403 career kills, 193 aces and 131 blocks, she touches every phase of the match. On a Sierra Canyon roster loaded with talent, she gives the Trailblazers balance in all six rotations.

USC is getting a competitor whose value reaches far beyond the scorebook. She can help a team win in more ways than one.

Jaycee Mack plays the game with power, and she is not shy about using it. When I watched her at the Durango Fall Classic, she hit with absolute power in the front row. That kind of arm speed changes how a defense lines up, because opponents have to respect the swing before it leaves her hand.

Her career at Torrey Pines shows a player who has handled a heavy workload from the start. She recorded more than 300 kills in both her sophomore and junior seasons. Outsides who take that many swings are the players coaches trust to stay aggressive in tight moments.

She brings more than offense. Her 655 career digs and 123 blocks show a player who stays involved at the net and in the backcourt. She competes in every rotation and does not disappear when the ball is on the other side.

Hawaii is getting an attacker with real firepower, a player built for big crowds and big swings. She has the tools, and her best volleyball is still in front of her.

Kalea Lee runs the offense for one of the best teams in the country, and she makes it look calm. Mater Dei is 33-1, and Kalea decides where the ball goes on every rally. I watched her at the Durango Fall Classic and again at the Nike TOC. Her team won the championship at both.

Her numbers tell the story of a setter who does more than distribute. She has averaged more than five assists per set across two varsity seasons. She also has 64 career aces and 280 digs, which means she defends, serves tough and keeps rallies alive. This season she is hitting just under .400 on her own attacks, so blockers cannot cheat toward the pins when she is in the front row.

She operates with the poise of someone who has played in the biggest matches on the schedule. Managing a lineup full of high-level hitters requires decision-making and emotional control, and she has both.

Kalea is uncommitted. For college coaches still searching for a setter who knows how to win, she is ready to play at the next level right now.

Evangeline Jeffries is playing the best volleyball of her career right now. Her senior season is her most efficient yet. She is hitting .333 with a higher kill percentage than any season before it. For a player in her fourth varsity year, that jump signals real growth in shot selection and confidence.

I watched her at the Durango Fall Classic, where she dominated the right side of the net with her blocking. She has 149 career blocks. That gives Sierra Canyon a physical presence that opposing outsides have to account for every rotation.

She has been productive for a long time. She has close to 1,000 career kills, including more than 400 as a sophomore, along with 634 digs and 129 aces. That is a complete profile for a pin, and it reflects a player who does not take plays off on either side of the ball.

On a Sierra Canyon roster full of headline names, she continues to raise her level. Tennessee is getting a pin who brings offense, blocking and steady growth.

Kaitlyn Herweg just put her name in the Los Alamitos record book. She has surpassed 1,500 career digs, the most in school history, and the milestone was celebrated at her senior night. Her MaxPreps profile currently shows 1,039 career digs because her senior season has not yet been entered.

Records like that are built on availability and consistency. Kaitlyn has been on the varsity floor since her freshman year. She averaged 3.5 digs per set through her first three seasons. Digging that many balls over four years takes discipline, positioning and the willingness to chase every ball, rally after rally.

She brings more than defense. Her 330 career assists show a libero who is trusted with the second contact. College programs value that skill because it keeps the offense running when the setter takes the first ball. Add 103 aces, and she impacts the match from the service line too.

At 5-foot-6, her game is built on reading, footwork and anticipation. Indiana is getting a backcourt leader who has already set the standard at Los Alamitos.

Asia Udo-Ema is one of the clearest growth stories in the 2027 class. Her hitting percentage has climbed every season at Corona Centennial. As a senior, she is hitting over .400 while averaging more than five kills per set. Volume usually costs efficiency. Asia is getting both at the same time.

That combination is what separates her. She has 1,693 career kills, the highest total on this list, and she has become harder to stop each year. Rising efficiency at that kind of volume points to smarter decisions at the net and a player who has learned how to stay aggressive without giving away points.

I watched her at the Durango Fall Classic and again at the Nike TOC, and she has come into her own. She helped her team battle hard against elite competition. She plays with the confidence of an attacker who wants the ball in big moments.

Her game reaches beyond offense, with 895 digs and 175 aces over her career. Arizona is getting a true player to watch at the next level, and her trajectory says she is not done climbing.

For a player in her fourth…
