CIF D1 Round 1: Santa Margarita at Oaks Christian
In this article:
Santa Margarita travels to Westlake Village to face Oaks Christian in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs, and both programs arrive with proof they can handle pressure. Oaks Christian entered mid-October at 25-2 on a 22-match win streak. Santa Margarita, which won a CIF Southern Section title last fall, handed Mater Dei its first loss of this season, rallying from 19-12 down in the fourth set behind 32 kills from Texas commit

talks about the team before herself, and that says a lot about a senior.
Chu is one of five seniors on a Santa Margarita team that handed Mater Dei its first loss of the season. In March, she described turning coaching into execution on her club team, serving to zones instead of chasing aces. She also blocked on game point to close out a set.
Evelyn's Voice
“As a senior, this CIF run means a lot, and I know this goes for all 5 seniors because this is our last time playing together on this team and we want to embrace every moment we have together, and especially beating Mater Dei earlier this year and being in D1 means so much to us, and we want to make it far in CIF. But to prepare for this, we've been working really hard in practice and putting in the work. I think our team has really good chemistry, like we all have the same end goal, and we are playing for each other.”
She plays for the group around her. Coaches looking for leadership that shows up in how a player talks about her teammates should pay attention.

has always had a leader's voice from the back row.
In April, as a sophomore, Granatelli called leadership the part of her game she was proudest of, organizing serve receive and defense so her team could run its offense.
Audrianna's Voice
“Since day one of high school, I've put in the work to become the defender I am today, and I'm confident in my ability to compete in a match like this. I've watched film to study their hitters' tendencies and worked hard with my team to prepare. I'm going into tonight ready to lead the back row and fight for every ball with grit.”
Her preparation matches the job: film on hitters, then taking space away so her hitters get more time. Coaches evaluating liberos for communication and anticipation should start here.

wants to own the court, and she says the team comes first.
As a freshman, Hornby described herself as hungry for feedback, and in May she said one player can change a team's energy.
Sophia's Voice
“I have always wanted people to notice my style of play where I believe one person can change the course and energy of the team, and I am always determined to bring everything I have into each match and prove to the other team the kind of player I am and to prove it to myself. I want to own the court and make a difference in our team through the way I play and show up in the gym. Our team lifts one another up and holds each other accountable because we know how well each person plays, and we want to bring out the best player possible in each other. The team is always first, and it is each player's job to have a lasting impact on their teammates, and encourage each other to play their absolute best, no matter the score or circumstances. The mindset of a player is what makes them stand out, and in the hardest moments of a game, an athlete needs the strongest and most developed mindset possible to play the game they train for. I hope that is what coaches will notice with me.”
The belief she named in May now sits next to accountability. Coaches should watch how she shows up when the match turns.

is earning the middle by reading the game, not just finishing plays.
In April, as a freshman, Kirchner said her strength was finding open spots and hitting deep corners, and she was working on her blocking through private sessions and strength training. Now at the varsity level, her focus has moved to how she processes the game.
Milena's Voice
“Playing middle at the varsity level has taught me how much faster the pace of the game is. I've learned that being a middle isn't just about getting kills and blocks, but also about reading the other team, and communicating with my teammates about what I've seen in order to help make quick decisions when blocking and placing hits. I've also learned how important it is to adjust to different situations quickly allowing you to re-position yourself to respond to the other teams tendencies.”
She understands that a middle's value is information. She reads, communicates what she sees, and adjusts her position, and that carries over to both blocking and shot placement.

has been comfortable in big moments since her freshman year.
Last fall, Medina was one of two freshmen on the floor when Santa Margarita won its CIF Southern Section title, digging tough swings and holding steady at the service line. As a sophomore, she's leaning into the stage rather than shrinking from it.
KC's Voice
“I am looking forward most to being able to compete with high level teams. Being in a big crowd and environment is a really cool experience. We've all worked very hard to be in D1 and I'm really excited to see what's out there.”
She plays with an appetite for pressure. Coaches looking for a back-row player who embraces a loud gym and high-level competition should keep her on their radar.

commitment changed how she competes: with joy.
Ogbechie committed to Princeton early, and she describes more film on opponents and role models, more attention to nutrition, recovery, and training, and a sharper eye for why teams win.
Malie's Voice
“After being committed, I define my compete with more joy.
I found myself watching film more of not only my opponents, but also role models and talented players to learn how I might add to or refine my skill set.
In addition, I get really excited about playing teams and players with commits because I feel like it's direct preparation for playing in college.
I also find myself thinking more about nutrition, recovery, and training as well as getting better at dissecting how players and teams are successful on the court.”
She likes facing committed players because she sees it as direct preparation for college, and tonight she has one across the net in Texas commit

is the player coaches can depend on.
Brooke's Voice
“One thing I'd want college coaches to know about my game, it's that I'm someone they can depend on. Between competing at a high level and taking five AP classes, I've learned how to manage my time, stay organized, and follow through on my commitments, which has helped me stay composed and perform under pressure. I believe character shows up most when you're tired, stressed, or things aren't going your way, and those are the moments that matter most. I try to bring that mindset to my game by competing hard, communicating, and being someone my coaches and teammates can count on in any situation.”
She connects character to the moments when she is tired or things go wrong, which is the question evaluators care about most. Who is she when it gets hard?

runs an offense like a hitter who has lived it.
Robinson moved to setter a year ago after playing six rotations at outside hitter. That path shapes how she sees the court and what she gives her hitters.
Ari's Voice
“If there is one thing I want college coaches to notice about my game, it is the edge and versatility that come from my background as a six-rotation outside hitter. Because I transitioned to setting just a year ago, I run an offense with an attacker's mindset and understand what hitters need to be successful having lived those high-pressure hitting moments myself.
Beyond that, I want coaches to see my competitiveness and adaptability. I take pride in being a setter who chases down tough balls, plays high-level defense, and treats every point as a battle.”
She operates with an attacker's mindset and a defender's appetite. Coaches should watch what she does when a pass breaks down, because that is where her background shows.

Film, scouting reports, visualization, and a pregame playlist make up a specific routine.
Giselle's Voice
“To prepare for any big match I will watch film and read scouting reports on our opponents in the days leading up to the match. In the practice before our match I will visualize myself having success on the court. One of my favorite things to do on the way to the game is to listen to my pregame playlist or country music.
The team has worked so hard this season and we are beyond excited to be in D1 playoffs for the Southern Section this year. This CIF run means a lot to the team and I am here to contribute in any way I can, both on and off the court. Go Eagles!”
She wants to contribute on and off the court, which is how younger players earn trust.

is a Tufts commit with a process-first message for the players behind her.
As a junior, Warren said her coaches wanted her attacking more at the net while she worked on her defense, and she plans to study pre-med. Asked what advice she would give players looking to follow in her footsteps, she kept it simple.
Siena's Voice
“My biggest advice would be to never give up on your goals and always trust the process. There is always going to be challenges and setbacks, but it's important to stay positive and keep working hard. Another thing I would say is to not compare your journey to anyone else's. Everyone has their own path and if you put in the work, the results will follow! Most importantly, remember why you fell in love with the sport!”
She refuses to compare her path to anyone else's, and that steadiness is what a senior setter brings to a playoff match.
