The Monarchs left with a 3-0 sweep, winning 25-17, 25-22 and 25-19 at home to improve to 37-1. Santa Margarita fell to 18-11. Mater Dei moved to 2-0 in the playoffs and keeps rolling toward the Division 1 championship.

Mater Dei opened with a 25-17 win, held off Santa Margarita 25-22 in a tighter second set, and closed 25-19. The Monarchs hit .386 as a team, with 48 kills on 101 swings and nine errors, and added eight blocks and 63 digs. Santa Margarita played without Texas commit [player_tooltip player_id='500618' first='Ireland' last='Real'], who leads the Eagles with 236 kills this season. She was in a walking boot on the sidelines and is expected to return for the state playoffs.

Mater Dei won with offense spread across the lineup, setters who kept every hitter involved, and a block that covered the net from pin to pin. Santa Margarita's best moments came from its back row and the right side, where Mackenzie McDaniel and [player_tooltip player_id='492745' first='Kate' last='Jackson'] both found ways to score. Below are notes on 15 players from both rosters.

Match: CIF-SS Division 1, Round 2 | Mater Dei 3, Santa Margarita 0

Mater Dei

[player_tooltip player_id='545359' first='Saaliyah' last='Brown'] attacked down the line and cross all night.

She worked off the top of the block to convert and found open court throughout the match. She finished with 10 kills on 15 swings without an error (.667) and added two blocks, one of them solo. Before the match she said she wanted to bring energy, leadership and confidence while “giving my team everything I have.” Hitting both angles and shutting down outside hitters is what that looks like on the court.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

[player_tooltip player_id='770397' first='Sienna' last='Cicero'] gave her hitters clean second balls.

Sienna stood out for communication, competitiveness and staying locked in. She is ranked No. 55 in the state, and last night she showed why. She led Mater Dei with 16 digs.

She used her hands well on the second ball and communicated so everyone stayed on the same page. She also contributed from the service line with an ace. Before the match, Sienna said serve receive is how she helps her setters run the offense and that she was excited “to keep the ball off the floor.” Even though she is still new to the libero position, last night you couldn't tell.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

[player_tooltip player_id='455792' first='Emma' last='Kingston'] closed the net from pin to pin.

Emma is a 6'4" senior middle committed to Cal and ranked No. 22 in the state's 2027 class.

Emma was fired up last night over a net call. I have watched Emma play for years, and last night she showed passion on the court. She blocked with fast footwork and covered the full length of the net with ease. On offense she used her wrist snap to control her angles with purpose, cutting the ball both left and right. She finished with 4 kills on 8 swings without an error.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

[player_tooltip player_id='482047' first='Westley' last='Matavao'] attacked from everywhere on the court.

In my 2027 Top 10 piece this fall, I wrote about a six-rotation outside with nearly 1,000 career kills and 730 career digs. Last night she finished with 9 kills, 2 aces and 9 digs, and took 17 serve receptions. Her back-row attacks and serving fit that profile.

She was dominant in front-row and back-row attacks and from the service line. She moves around the court with ease and uses a powerful arm swing to place the ball. She went back to her classic top-spin serve, fast and hard, and cut the ball at a hard angle for back-to-back kills.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

[player_tooltip player_id='486781' first='Katherine' last='Nowak'] stayed consistent with her swing.

Katherine was a JSerra outside hitter and has transitioned into a starter for Mater Dei. Making that move as a senior and earning a starting spot is impressive. She shows tremendous team chemistry.

Her offensive work was steady all night, including a fantastic two in the middle for the kill. She made smart offensive choices over the block. She finished with 9 kills (.400), 12 digs and 14 serve receptions, and scored 11 points from the service line.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

[player_tooltip player_id='769741' first='Jimin' last='Seung'] has always been impressive mechanically, and her freshman poise in high-stakes games is phenomenal.

Jimin swings fast and fearless with a volleyball IQ beyond her freshman year. She is an offensive threat who knows when to swing and when to shoot, and she hit the hard angle with skill. She was also a threat at the service line. In two sets she had 4 kills, an ace and a block assist. Jimin has made a strong name for herself.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

[player_tooltip player_id='748210' first='Jael' last='Smith'] took the net away from hitters.

She is a 6'3" sophomore middle. She is ranked the No. 1 2029 middle in California and No. 2 in the state overall. Jael plays above her class. She led Mater Dei with 6 blocks, three of them solo, and hit .643 with 9 kills and no errors.

She was dominant at the net with a long extension and worked her swings around the block, hitting both the right and left angle. Before the match, Jael told me “I can pull a blocker with a strong approach” and that making a play does not always mean you're the one scoring. Her swings around the block and her presence at the net did that work.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

[player_tooltip player_id='515127' first='Riley' last='Stringer'] has always been one to watch, and her performance last night showed why younger athletes should watch and emulate her.

In my piece on juniors running the most offense, Riley averaged 5.0 assists per set (462 assists over 92 sets). She is ranked No. 1 in the state among setters and right sides.

Riley ran the Mater Dei offense with control. She delivered to all of her hitters and kept the communication constant. She finished with 25 assists (8.3 per set), an ace and 4 digs. She reads the ball off the pass. She plays with discipline on defense, getting the ball up on the right side and staying back where she needs to be. She was also consistent at the service line, including delivering an ace. Before the match, Riley told me she controls the pace by staying calm and collected when the team feels anxious. That is the job a setter has in a playoff match, and she handled it.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Santa Margarita

[player_tooltip player_id='782718' first='Ella' last='Asher'] put her whole approach behind the ball.

She gets up and puts a strong arm swing behind the ball with lots of momentum from her approach. She is hungry for the set and communicates well with her setter. Before the match, Ella said a big gym asks for “trust in one another.” Her communication with her setter showed that and she played with complete poise in front of the Mater Dei crowd.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

[player_tooltip player_id='781994' first='Mikka' last='Gonzalez'] gave herself room to work.

Mikka is a fun middle to watch who always plays with a smile.

She kept excellent space and distance from the setter when hitting. That gave her enough room to take the angle. She made the most of the sets she saw and looks ready for more.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

[player_tooltip player_id='492745' first='Kate' last='Jackson'] played with a smile and a strong jump serve.

Kate is a USC commit and played a great match in front of her sister, Pepperdine's Grace Jackson, who cheered the loudest in the Santa Margarita section. She leads Santa Margarita with 30 aces this season, per MaxPreps.

Kate did the work on the court last night. Offensively she was the go-to hitter and in the back row she delivered her deadly top spin jump serve. She plays with passion for the game. Before the match, Kate said Santa Margarita wanted to “compete for every point” and bring the same energy it has had all season. Sienna Cicero Sienna Cicero Sienna Cicero 5'7" | OH/DS/L Mater Dei | 2029 State CA gave her hitters clean second balls.

Riley Stringer Riley Stringer Riley Stringer 5'11" | S/RS Mater Dei | 2028 State #46 Nation CA has always been one to watch, and her performance last night showed why younger athletes should watch and emulate her.

She gets up and puts a strong arm swing behind the ball with lots of momentum from her approach. She is hungry for the set and communicates well with her setter.
