Flint Hill has struggled early in the season. Coming into this tournament they were 3-6 after losing four of their last five matches. They seemed to have gotten a bit of their mojo back by winning their own tournament. Last year Colgan won the Flint Hill Invitational, defeating Bishop O'Connell in the finals. It was the first time Flint Hill had not won their own tournament. This year Colgan got knocked out early in the playoffs by Paul VI after also getting upset by Oakton in their pool to come into the playoffs as a second seed.

Flint Hill also finished second in their pool after being crushed by Paul VI the first time they played them. This loss seemed to energize them as they swept through the playoffs to win the tournament. In the first round of the playoffs they barely squeaked by Oakton taking the first set 25-19 but then losing the second set 25-21. The final set was won by Flint Hill 15-13.

Flint Hill got a bit of revenge by beating Paul VI in the finals. [player_tooltip player_id='238358' first='Evie' last='Huang'], who missed all of last year because of injury seemed to find her stride as the tournament progressed. She passed at a 2.3 rate and dug 37 balls. This earned her the nod for the MVP of the tournament. Evie has committed to George Mason. [player_tooltip player_id='437441' first='Hunter' last='Ross'] benefited from this passing by generating the offense with 55 kills, many of them hitting outside. Hunter has committed to UCLA.

Oakton took down Bishop Ireton, Colgan and Georgetown Visitation in their pool to finish a surprising first. Against Colgan [player_tooltip player_id='465321' first='Marissa' last='Turek'] and [player_tooltip player_id='814457' first='Jocelynn' last='Kinlaw'] led the charge with eight kills each. Julia Lee has taken over the setting role after the injury to [player_tooltip player_id='238857' first='Julie' last='Xu'], dishing out 24 assists. While she only stands 5'3" her distribution seemed to keep everyone involved when is setting a 5/1. [player_tooltip player_id='756342' first='Olivia' last='Baick'] won player of the match with her three aces, seven points serving and four digs. This resulted in a tightly fought 25-21, 28-26 victory.

Unfortunately for Oakton they could not keep the momentum into the playoffs, losing in three to Flint Hill 19-25, 25-21 and 13-15. Elina Shen led the team in kills with 8. [player_tooltip player_id='814457' first='Jocelynn' last='Kinlaw'] contributed 7 kills and two blocks. Her main sport is basketball where many expect her to find a Division I scholarship. She dominates in the middle on the volleyball court. [player_tooltip player_id='465321' first='Marissa' last='Turek'] earned a spot for Oakton on the all tournament team.

Paul VI won their pool and was able to dispose of Colgan in the semifinals. Ultimately, they lost to Flint Hill in the finals. Information had yet to be provided by Colgan, Flint Hill and Paul VI on the results of their matches. Since I was unable to attend the event info was provided based on my discussion with two coaches at the event.

West Springfield came into the match undefeated. Setter [player_tooltip player_id='438046' first='Anna' last='Dierks'] had been out the past few games because of an injury but was ready to return to the lineup for this match. While she may not have been 100 percent healthy the Spartans were glad to have her setting again. To ease the transition, she set a 6/2 with Sariyah Sadler when normally she sets a 5/1.

Langley proved their dominance on offense by taking the first set 25-19. [player_tooltip player_id='554770' first='Rujuta' last='Singh'] led the team on offense, including blasting an ace serve to pull them within one point of winning the set 24-19. A combo block by [player_tooltip player_id='377330' first='Chloe' last='Lin'] and [player_tooltip player_id='530362' first='Claire' last='Nitowski'] ended the match 25-19.

West Springfield made it a little closer in the second set but fell short 25-22. Right side [player_tooltip player_id='890257' first='Ryleigh' last='McGowen'] (10) and left side [player_tooltip player_id='354086' first='Nina' last='Schweigert'] (12) provided the offense with 22 kills while [player_tooltip player_id='725456' first='Audrey' last='Busch'] made some incredible defensive plays among her 29 digs to keep rallies alive. A controversial under the net call ended the set 25-22.

The Spartans battled back to win the third set 25-21. [player_tooltip player_id='693144' first='Layla' last='Babiker'] generated a couple kills while also contributing two aces [player_tooltip player_id='377330' first='Chloe' last='Lin'] and [player_tooltip player_id='739977' first='Elizabeth' last='Hemberg'] combined on a block for Langley to tie the set 16-16. [player_tooltip player_id='890257' first='Ryleigh' last='McGowen'] put them ahead for good with a 5 kill run to extend their lead to 21-18. A [player_tooltip player_id='354086' first='Nina' last='Schweigert'] top spin ace moved it to 24-21 while a block by [player_tooltip player_id='845135' first='Andrea' last='Lazo'] ended the match 25-21.

The fourth set found [player_tooltip player_id='739977' first='Elizabeth' last='Hemberg'] hot with two kills to create an early 4-1 lead. The Spartans crawled back to within one 11-12 after an [player_tooltip player_id='725456' first='Audrey' last='Busch'] ace but [player_tooltip player_id='554770' first='Rujuta' last='Singh'] put away her 13th kill to go along with three ace serves to put the set almost out of reach at 21-13. [player_tooltip player_id='739977' first='Elizabeth' last='Hemberg'] finished the match with 12 kills. The Saxons won the last set 25-16.

Most importantly, [player_tooltip player_id='238357' first='Claire' last='Mo'] reached 2,000 assists for her career at Langley during the match.

Bishop O'Connell Sweeps in Richmond Road Trip

Bishop O'Connell traveled to Richmond to battle two VISAA rivals. In the first match they swept past St. Catherines 25-23, 25-17 and 25-11. St. Catherines were within one, 24-23 in the first set with serve but super frosh [player_tooltip player_id='746506' first='Carolyn' last='Maria'] crushed a spike to end the set 25-23. She finished the match with 11 kills. [player_tooltip player_id='488812' first='Olivia' last='Boggs'] also had 11 kills while [player_tooltip player_id='385968' first='Macie' last='Murray'] was one step back with 10. Olivia has been an offensive weapon up the middle with 55 kills, third on the team, calculating to an awe inspiring .64 kill percentage. Her long arms have the ability to hit the ball past any block.

[player_tooltip player_id='385968' first='Macie' last='Murray'] should have finished the match leading the team in kills but Saints libero [player_tooltip player_id='322106' first='Bailey' last='Loving'] dug up many of her crushing blows. Bailey leads the team in digs. The Saints run their offense using two frosh setters, [player_tooltip player_id='888288' first='Lila' last='Cross'] and [player_tooltip player_id='888289' first='Emmerson' last='Croft']. Sometimes they use them in a 6/2 but at other times they run a modified 5/1 with Lila setting in the front row. Left side [player_tooltip player_id='828736' first='Ada' last='Huntington'] at 5'9" is a bit undersized for a left side, but she brings a good jump as well as a fast arm swing to finish her kills.

The Knights next match will be against Collegiate, who were in Fairfax on Friday night playing against Potomac School. After defeating Potomac School 3-1 they took the long bus ride back to Richmond to do battle with the Knights on Saturday.

The first set was close early, but O'Connell pulled away 25-20. [player_tooltip player_id='746506' first='Carolyn' last='Maria'] led the way with many of her team leading 14 kills and 70 percent kill percentage. [player_tooltip player_id='385968' first='Macie' last='Murray'] was unstoppable in set two with her top spin serve, piling up many of her team leading 9 aces to whisk the Knights to an early 9-1 lead. They went on to win 25-19. [player_tooltip player_id='488812' first='Olivia' last='Boggs'] led the team in blocks with four.

Collegiate showed a lot of success with their middles creating much of their offense. [player_tooltip player_id='812540' first='Clare' last='Aman'] and [player_tooltip player_id='814032' first='Isabelle' last='Brabrand'] led the team in kills. [player_tooltip player_id='517814' first='Ashley' last='Grace Johnstone'] played a solid libero. Her passing was consistent allowing the Cougars to set the middles while her defense kept rallies alive.

O'Connell improved their record to 9-0. They have yet to lose a set. A big test comes Monday when they face one of their conference rivals St. Johns.

This year they will have to contend with Annapolis Area Christian as well as Maryvale Prep for the Bracket A playoff run. [player_tooltip player_id='437457' first='Jasmin' last='Tucker'] is a key player in this fight, leading the team in kills with 137, almost 100 kills greater than the next teammate. She has produced double digit figures in kills for all their matches. Jasmine also leads the team in service aces as well as digs.
