Hits for Chicks NewCath at Bishop Brossart impressions

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds and Bishop Brossart Mustangs have been wearing uniforms with the color pink in them for the annual Hits for Chicks game for years trying to raise awareness for breast cancer.

The teams walked with, honored those battling breast cancer and other forms of cancer before the game then took to the court at Bishop Brossart in front of a near capacity crowd. Favored Brossart came away with a 2-0 (25-13, 25-18) non-region win.

Brossart (20-9 overall) mainly used the one-two junior punch of [player_tooltip player_id='484451' first='Aubrey' last='Rebholz'] and [player_tooltip player_id='515259' first='Callie' last='Ritter'] to its advantage. NewCath (13-15) has no one to match up with the 6-2 Ritter. Rebholz also involved the likes of [player_tooltip player_id='885299' first='Evelyn' last='Laker'], Claire Decker and [player_tooltip player_id='832519' first='Hailey' last='Heitker']. Libero [player_tooltip player_id='587827' first='Grace' last='Frommeyer'], eighth grader [player_tooltip player_id='891600' first='Audrey' last='Arnold'] along with [player_tooltip player_id='569742' first='Josie' last='Reckner'] and [player_tooltip player_id='727153' first='Payton' last='Marshall'] had nice games passing the ball.

"They came ready to play. We had a hard practice (Wednesday)," Bishop Brossart head coach Danielle French said. "We worked on things that we were maybe struggling with the last couple games and it showed. We worked on our block coverage. They covered this whole court great. They played well defensively. Our attacking was spectacular. All-around, they just played flawless and I'm just so proud of them."

On the other side, NewCath saw junior libero [player_tooltip player_id='484445' first='Jordyn' last='Reckers'] had a nice game with kills leaders [player_tooltip player_id='891631' first='Bella' last='Schaber'], [player_tooltip player_id='882125' first='Miley' last='Wolf'] and [player_tooltip player_id='743567' first='Maura' last='Franzen'] taking good swings. [player_tooltip player_id='776882' first='Kolbey' last='Kohrs'] continues to give the Thoroughbreds good all-around play with [player_tooltip player_id='540518' first='Paytin' last='Reckers'] and [player_tooltip player_id='693877' first='Piperlyn' last='Kramer'] giving NewCath nice defensive play in the back row. The Thoroughbreds just struggled to get into a good offensive rhythm.

Brossart hosts Calvary Christian on Monday. NewCath next plays again Tuesday at home against Cooper.

Notable Performers

Ritter has turned into the huge force in the middle the Brossart staff envisioned when she entered high school. Ritter is very aggressive at the net both offensively and defensively. She takes hard swings, especially on ones, but can also make plays at the pins. Ritter also makes good passes and sends hard serves to different spots on the floor. Ritter said trying hard, desire and not being lazy about being tall is a key to solid front row play.

Rebholz made a glorious return after being out for nearly three weeks with an injury. Rebholz ran the Brossart offense as effectively as usual. She made great decisions, consistently finding the hot hitters as well as ones away from double blocks. Rebholz puts sets to the tops of her hitters' vertical jumps so they can hit over and around blockers. Rebholz also had an effective game passing and sent some hard serves to the back row to keep NewCath out of rhythm. Rebholz said she was nervous about her return at first but positive energy from her teammates helped her contribute.

Arnold (pictured) is another young player that has made an impact for the Mustangs. Arnold makes the simple first touches. She will only dive when necessary. Arnold did take some nice swings in the victory for Brossart. Arnold will continue to grow as the season progresses. Arnold said positive teammates have been a key for her making a big impact on the varsity level.

Marshall continues to bring great energy to the Mustangs.
