Despite losing the first set Madison bounced back to win the final two sets to take the Hawks Invitational championship. Also, number one James Wood was taken down by North Hagerstown. Finally. The Hubs had not beaten them since 2021. Number 5 Bishop O'Connell survived a scare from St. Johns, losing their first two sets of the season, but taking the fifth set to remain undefeated. As did number 7 Riverside against Briar Woods. All detailed below.

Eight teams competed, but it was the two teams from the Concorde Division who made it to the championship. In pool play Chantilly split its opener against Westfield but swept their next two opponents, Mt. Vernon and Annandale. Westfield got a much needed sweep from Annandale in the last match of pool play or it would have fallen to third place with Annandale advancing to the gold.

James Madison also split their first match of the day against Woodbridge but swept both Edison and Hayfield. Edison swept past Woodbridge and Hayfield to finish in second place. If Woodbridge had accomplished a split in their last match against Edison they also would have advanced to the gold.

In our next post some of the players who stood out in the silver bracket will be highlighted. This post is dedicated to the gold bracket teams.

[player_tooltip player_id='265167' first='Laila' last='Chadwick']

In the first gold match for Madison they went up against Westfield. Westfield actually took a 5-2 lead in the first set but the Warhawks took charge after that. A kill by [player_tooltip player_id='265167' first='Laila' last='Chadwick'] put them up 8-7 and they never looked back. Middle [player_tooltip player_id='753047' first='Olivia' last='Schulz'] generated points whacking the quick tempo sets in the middle and [player_tooltip player_id='455177' first='Briana' last='Vo'] popped in a couple ace serves. The score quickly moved to 19-8. A [player_tooltip player_id='455177' first='Briana' last='Vo'] setter dump mercilessly ended the set 25-13.

The second set stayed close early as well with a [player_tooltip player_id='265167' first='Laila' last='Chadwick'] kill giving Madison an 8-5 lead. A combo block by [player_tooltip player_id='753047' first='Olivia' last='Schulz'] and [player_tooltip player_id='359401' first='Chloe' last='Barth'] put Madison ahead 11-6. They did not lose serve until the score was 20-6, [player_tooltip player_id='753047' first='Olivia' last='Schulz'] contributed three more blocks during this onslaught. The Warhawks would go on to win 25-8.

Madison did battle with Chantilly in the finals. With [player_tooltip player_id='240899' first='Sarah' last='Kim'] opening serve Chantilly jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Sarah contributed two aces while [player_tooltip player_id='716365' first='Skyler' last='Riley'] and [player_tooltip player_id='455102' first='Erin' last='Green'] each buried two kills. Madison could never recover, getting as close as four points at 6-10, but four kills from [player_tooltip player_id='377344' first='Julia' last='Horan'] ran the score up again to 16-7. Julia would end the set 25-18 with a tip over the block.

Madison turned the page in set two and jumped out to a 6-1 lead, right side [player_tooltip player_id='359401' first='Chloe' last='Barth'] and middle Tatianna Wilson contributing to the offense. Chantilly would get no closer than five points for the remainder of the second set. [player_tooltip player_id='807914' first='Ella' last='Jarvis'] finished the scoring with two kills for the 25-10 win.

The third set remained close with [player_tooltip player_id='265167' first='Laila' last='Chadwick'], [player_tooltip player_id='753047' first='Olivia' last='Schulz'] and [player_tooltip player_id='359401' first='Chloe' last='Barth'] providing much of the offense. The turning point came near the end with Madison protecting a slim 13-11 lead. A long rally followed with each attack tempered down. When the set went to [player_tooltip player_id='359401' first='Chloe' last='Barth'] she was not shy about putting some muscle on the ball and she buried one near the 10 foot line for the kill and a 14-11 lead. The next rally, with the defense on their heals Chloe rolled a shot over the block where it hit the floor before a diving defender could reach it. Madison had won the third set 15-11.

If I had to choose Madison players for the all tournament team they would have gone to middle [player_tooltip player_id='753047' first='Olivia' last='Schulz'], [player_tooltip player_id='265167' first='Laila' last='Chadwick'], [player_tooltip player_id='359401' first='Chloe' last='Barth'], libero [player_tooltip player_id='800156' first='Jenna' last='Swale'] and setter [player_tooltip player_id='455177' first='Briana' last='Vo']. I would give the MVP to [player_tooltip player_id='753047' first='Olivia' last='Schulz'] for her play in the middle.

Chantilly

The Chargers may have lost Lameen "Mimi" Lambu, but they have a pretty close facsimile in [player_tooltip player_id='716365' first='Skyler' last='Riley']. Only a junior, but she can put the ball down pretty hard. If Chantilly would have won she clearly would have been the MVP of the tournament.

Chantilly went up against a strong Edison team in the semi-finals. A [player_tooltip player_id='716365' first='Skyler' last='Riley'] kill followed by her six service points gave Chantilly an early 7-2 lead. They would never let Edison creep within four after that, extending the lead to 22-12 after back to back aces from Hannah Pourhashemi. Chantilly would go on to win the first set 25-16.

Chantilly jumped out to an early lead in the second set as well. [player_tooltip player_id='716365' first='Skyler' last='Riley'] powered a set through the block then followed up with three aces to give the Chargers an early 6-1 lead. When middle Alena Guilliod blocked [player_tooltip player_id='377344' first='Julia' last='Horan'] to make the score 3-8 Julia got a bit of revenge by blocking Alena to give Chantilly a 12-5 lead. [player_tooltip player_id='455102' first='Erin' last='Green'] proved powerful on the right side and Chantilly cruised to a 25-15 win.

All tournament team selections from Chantilly would include left side [player_tooltip player_id='716365' first='Skyler' last='Riley'], right side [player_tooltip player_id='455102' first='Erin' last='Green'], middle [player_tooltip player_id='377344' first='Julia' last='Horan'] and setter [player_tooltip player_id='240899' first='Sarah' last='Kim'].

Edison was swept by Madison in pool play while Westfield failed to win a set against Chantilly. In the semi-finals Chantilly rolled over Edison while Madison took two from Westfield. This left Edison and Westfield doing battle for third place.

The first set was closely contested. An ace by [player_tooltip player_id='747675' first='Haley' last='Marsh'] gave Westfield a 21-20 lead. Two kills by left side [player_tooltip player_id='739375' first='Jolene' last='Green Ewen'] gave them a 23-20 lead. [player_tooltip player_id='845882' first='Louise' last='Atiz'] sealed the 25-21 win with a kill.

In the second set Westfield jumped out to a 7-1 lead. The closest Edison would get to them is 18-22. A kill by Payton Susko moved Westfield up 23-18. A [player_tooltip player_id='730610' first='Maryella' last='Rodriguez'] kill followed by a [player_tooltip player_id='747675' first='Haley' last='Marsh'] blast ended the match 25-18.

The All tournament team for Westfield would be libero [player_tooltip player_id='536716' first='Diane' last='Nzoupet'] and right side [player_tooltip player_id='845882' first='Louise' last='Atiz'].

The last time North Hagerstown beat James Wood was in 2021 when Baylee Doolan was only a frosh. Baylee has graduated but Caydence has suffered three consecutive losses against James Wood. They went five against them in 2022 but lost the fifth set 17-15, frosh [player_tooltip player_id='181302' first='Kennedy' last='Spaid'] delivering 20 kills. They took the first set in 2023 but lost the next three and last year they also lost in four.

Since the arrival of [player_tooltip player_id='181302' first='Kennedy' last='Spaid'] and [player_tooltip player_id='181280' first='Brenna' last='Corbin'] North Hagerstown has not beaten James Wood. This year the Colonels travelled to North Hagerstown as the number one ranked team in the D.C., Virginia and Maryland (DMV) area, undefeated at 18-0. The Hubs did not give them much of a chance with [player_tooltip player_id='303701' first='Caydence' last='Doolan'] leading the charge with 28 kills in the 25-16, 25-20 and 25-23 sweep.

North Hagerstown now improves to 8-0. James Wood, after defeating four different state champions from last year in Riverside, Maryvale Prep, Georgetown Day and Williamsport fails to defeat the fifth defending state champ and drops to 18-1.

The number 5 ranked Knights came into the match without yet losing a set. That ended after the first set when the Knights struggled with their passing and the Cadets took advantage for a 25-22 win. The Knights recovered to win the next two sets 25-20, 25-21. The Cadets could do no wrong in the fourth set, digging everything the Knights hit their way for a resounding 25-11 victory. Some teams may have folded after such a resounding defeat but the Knights bounced back. In the fifth set they jumped to an early 5-0 lead, eventually taking the set 15-8.

[player_tooltip player_id='385968' first='Macie' last='Murray'] powered her way past the Cadet blocks for 22 kills.
Riverside Squeaks by Briar Woods

After the first set finished you expected a mismatch. Riverside won quite handily 25-12. The second set the Rams could not stop senior middle [player_tooltip player_id='817065' first='Michelle' last='Herbert']. Everything she touched found the floor on the Rams side of the net. Frosh setter [player_tooltip player_id='752431' first='Kayla' last='Chang'] also started the momentum by serving the Falcons to a 3-0 lead. Eventually Riverside pulled ahead 19-18 With Riverside ahead 24-22 you assumed the match was over. Briar Woods pulled to within one when Riverside was called for a net. [player_tooltip player_id='817065' first='Michelle' last='Herbert'] tied the game by finding the floor for a kill. Frosh libero [player_tooltip player_id='881831' first='Allison' last='Tan'] served up an ace and a final net call on the Rams gave Briar Wood the 26-24 win.

With momentum on their side Briar Woods dominated the third set with sophomore outside [player_tooltip player_id='829291' first='Allie' last='Bowen'] and another senior middle [player_tooltip player_id='823083' first='Carly' last='Adams'] leading the charge. They combined for six kills and two blocks while [player_tooltip player_id='881831' first='Allison' last='Tan'] also rung up another three aces and the Falcons won 25-19. Carly generated a kill and an ace to pull them within one 24-19 and Allie finished it off with a kill.

Down two games to one [player_tooltip player_id='301696' first='Nadiya' last='Johnson'] took charge for Riverside. [player_tooltip player_id='333652' first='Gabriella' last='Vizek'] also bunched up a number of points with quick tempo sets up the middle. Riverside took the fourth set 25-18, never giving the Falcons the chance to get close. They also controlled the fifth set. After a kill by [player_tooltip player_id='755848' first='Mihika' last='Mamidi'] pulled the Falcons to within one at 8-9, the Rams did not allow them another point. [player_tooltip player_id='301696' first='Nadiya' last='Johnson'] kills resulted in five of the last six points for the 15-8 win. [player_tooltip player_id='438070' first='Camryn' last='Coulther'] served the last five points.
