About Ava

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I am a strong libero in volleyball, I have strong passing, and digging skills . I am very fast with my footwork and am a great communicator on the team. My coach always says I am very coachable and positive. I always go for the ball, no matter how difficult it seems. I bring a lot of positive energy to the team. I am a great team player with a positive mindset.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I am tough mentally, I can bounce back from a tough play with always maintaining my focus on the next point. I have a positive attitude and communicate with my team really well. I show lots of confidence in my ability to pass and dig the ball even under pressure.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I am on the Varsity Surf team at my high school, Mira Costa, we meet in the water every morning at 6:30 to 8:00 surfing. I used to compete on the weekends, but now only for the high school competitions, as I dont have extra time on the weekends with volley ball. I also am on the Varsity Beach Team at Mira Costa, and also on a Club Beach Time, called South Bay Sand.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

I have a great demeanor on and off the court and always come with positive energy to keep the team uplifted no mater what the circumstances. I have developed to play both defensively and offensively. I also have developed being able to analyze my opponent's tactics and adjusting to their defensive positioning. I am able to focus on the ball and the game even when things get tough.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

Last year I broke my shoulder snowboarding. I was in the park doing a jump, and fell, and the next person in line coming off of a jump landed on top of me and crushed my shoulder. I worked really hard, and mentally and physically came back stronger. Working hard and having perseverance you can do anything you set your mind to.

What type of college are you looking for?

I am looking for a four year university, preferably in California. Ideally a university with strong volleyball coaching and a supportive environment with opportunities for development and growth. For academics Im not sure what I want to major in yet, I am just a freshman, and am hoping in the next two years I will have a better idea of what I want to major in.

Ava Saffell Ava Saffell Ava Saffell 5'7" | DS/L Mira Costa | 2028 State CA demonstrated expanding range in serve receive, stepping into more court responsibility and stabilizing first contact against aggressive serving pressure. By taking up additional space, she allowed her attackers to load earlier and operate with cleaner rhythm. Her presence in the back row translated into trust, particularly in transition sequences where defensive control kept rallies extended.

Her development focus now centers on out-of-system setting from zone one. After recognizing how ball trajectory affected her opposite’s approach window, she began redirecting those emergency contacts to the outside or back-row option to create a more hittable tempo. Off the court, Saffell competes in surfing and participates in the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation’s ocean therapy initiatives while also earning Honor Roll recognition at Mira Costa High School.
