Only a matter of minutes after the on-court celebrations, the Scott Eagles darted to the other side of the building to the pool, jumping in to celebrate winning the annual September Slam on Saturday.

Veteran head coach Andrea Sullivan joined the team a few minutes later. The host Eagles (7-3 overall) had to come back against a pesky Holy Cross (Covington) Indians team that had some big wins in the Bluegrass Games earlier in August.

"Holy Cross is quick, athletic. They got a lot of weapons," Sullivan said. "I knew it was going to be a battle. It came down to the wire in every set. Maybe we made a few more plays than they did and a few less errors, but it was a great match."

The Indians had won the tournament three straight years from 2021 to 2023 and looked to take their fourth in the last five years. It looked as though that would be the case after they won the first set in the championship game, 27-25 then had game point several times in the second set. However, the resilient Eagles fought back and took the second game, 27-26 on a tight shot down the left line. Scott won the third game 15-13 with the final shot on a push to the right corner landing just out of bounds after Holy Cross successfully landed one earlier in the game.

Freshman middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='816874' first='Maya' last='Hayden'] has given Holy Cross a good option in the middle with sophomore Jordan Timmerding giving the Indians quality play in the back row.

Minor had as solid of a tournament as the two-time reigning 10th Region Player of the Year as ever. Minor is an outstanding leader on the court using her six years of varsity experience to teach the less experienced players ways to succeed on the varsity level. Minor has great ball placement on the court. She knows when to go full blast with her form and when to let up and send soft touches to the 10-foot line. Minor said the returning players reference the comeback win over West Jessamine in the first round of state last year, knowing they can come back when needed.

Campbell makes the simple passes then quickly transitions to offense. Campbell gives the Eagles a sound threat from the outside. She hit some into the net, but did not let it phase her. Campbell kept swinging. That's one of the reasons Campbell came into the tournament with the second-most kills for Scott behind Minor. Campbell said she wants to be a player her teammates can count on to make plays.

White used her size to propel the Indians to a 4-1 tournament good for third in the September Slam. White uses her athleticism to send balls screaming to the floor. She sends balls down the line one play then can pound it across the court on the next one. White is consistent for the Indians, even on defense with first touches. White said it helps that setter [player_tooltip player_id='397723' first='Kate' last='Conn'] continues to send balls her way even after bad hits, noting if one shot does not work, the next one will and she'll have more chances.

When Dixie Heights gets good first touches and especially in system, Kennedy has shown she can put balls down. Kennedy had some nice shots from the right side against Madison Central. She can mix things up hitting balls to the middle of the 10-foot line and down the line.

Hall served as the setter for her club, but has gone back to mainly hitting outside for the Indians. The setting experience comes in handy when the Indians are out of system as Hall makes crisp sets. Hall makes nice first touches then moves quickly to offense and takes big swings. Hall is also good at net coverage. Hall said it's a matter of staying confident, relaxed and relying on what you know to succeed on the court.

The Camels may be struggling now, but Mullins has shown some bright spots from the opposite side. Mullins is trying to help Campbell County control the net with nice timing on her solo and double blocks, at least getting touches on balls. Mullins has good power, especially on the crosses. Mullins also puts down overpassed balls. Mullins said she's hitting spots better and making smart plays. She said it's important for the Camels to stay together and not get worked up about mistakes.
