It's early enough in the season that changes can be made. Maybe a certain lineup isn't working or players can find ways to better connect. We've got something we want to switch up here at Prep Dig Iowa.

In the past, I've written a weekly roundup of action from around the state. It's served its purpose but also run its course. Technology has advanced, allowing us to view a lot of matches on line. Bound has continued being a great resource for reports when schools input their data in a reasonable timeframe.

As a result, we can produce three roundups a week, running on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. It allows us to highlight more teams and kids.

It's important to note that we're restricted. As you've read from me repeatedly, there's a lot more of you than me. I can only write based on information I have. I watch match videos on Hudl and You Tube, and gather results and statistics from Bound.

With that, let's take a look at what went down on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025:

Waukee Northwest tops Centennial in 5

Two of 5A's best tangled in Waukee Tuesday night, three days after meeting up in Ankeny. Northwest cruised to a 2-0 victory in the Centennial Early Bird Tournament on Saturday. The rematch proved much closer, the Wolves needing five sets to claim victory this time.

You can watch the match HERE.

Northwest controlled the first set, winning 25-17. The home team led, 15-14, before putting together a 9-2 run. [player_tooltip player_id='490013' first='Logan' last='Vogt'] delivered three kills and a pair of service aces, and her older sister, [player_tooltip player_id='389019' first='Avery' last='Vogt'], had a pair of assists and a dump kill during the spurt. [player_tooltip player_id='490011' first='Leah' last='Janulewicz'] came up with a dig, assist and kill in the decisive charge, and reserve [player_tooltip player_id='389065' first='Anna' last='Pelds'] chipped in a pair of aces.

Centennial battled back to get within 22-21 of the Wolves in Set 2. Northwest responded by winning the next three points for a 2-0 lead. [player_tooltip player_id='493601' first='Piper' last='Ladwig'] got the run started by pounding down a kill off of a nifty [player_tooltip player_id='555820' first='London' last='Taylor'] dig and an [player_tooltip player_id='389019' first='Avery' last='Vogt'] assist. Taylor followed up with an ace before Ladwig finished it off with another kill.

The Jaguars responded for a 25-23, Set-3 victory after building a 15-9 lead. Leading 23-20, [player_tooltip player_id='389060' first='Tatem' last='Schmidt'] made it set point with a kill off a roll shot. After Northwest scored three points in a row, a Wolves' service error ended it for Centennial on its fifth set point. [player_tooltip player_id='827838' first='Sophia' last='Heither'] played really well during crunch-time of this set, including a kill for point 23.

The visitors built a 17-14 lead in Set 4 before the Jaguars ripped off an 8-1 run. [player_tooltip player_id='261083' first='Maegan' last='Cheeseman'] got it started with a kill from the opposite pin. Kills by Schmidt and Heither, an ace by [player_tooltip player_id='498069' first='Kaelyn' last='Rinehart'] and four Northwest mistakes put the home team up, 22-18. The Wolves scored four of the next six points, but Cheeseman set Schmidt for the set-winning kill.

Northwest jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fifth set courtesy of a pair of [player_tooltip player_id='490013' first='Logan' last='Vogt'] kills and a block, and two kills from Ladwig. [player_tooltip player_id='747361' first='Sidney' last='Rogers'], [player_tooltip player_id='808135' first='Ellie' last='Pollock'] and others helped the Jaguars battle back to 13-12 deficit. A Centennial service error gave the Wolves a match point but Schmidt delivered a kill off of a Cheeseman assist, extending the match. A setting error by the visitors knotted the score up at 14-14.

The No. 1 team would not be denied, however, scoring the next two points to close out the match. Taylor dug out a tough serve, hit [player_tooltip player_id='389019' first='Avery' last='Vogt'] with a crisp pass and [player_tooltip player_id='545971' first='Avery' last='Cordes'] finished it with a kill. That same trio hooked up on the match-winning point with Cordes slamming the ball down from the middle of the net.

Schmidt led Centennial with 11 kills and also chipped in with 11 assists, five digs and 3.0 blocks. Cheeseman dished out 22 assists and came up with 10 digs, Heither added seven kills and 5.0 blocks, and [player_tooltip player_id='261088' first='Mya' last='Lei-Butters'] had 23 digs.

Northwest hadn't uploaded its statistics at the time of this story's publishing, but the stars starred. The Vogts, Ladwig, Janulewicz, Taylor and Cordes all played at a high level in a pressure-packed rivalry match.
