District championships may not have the same meaning in the Commonwealth as they do in other states. To make the region tournament, teams have to make it to the district championship game. However, district championships often mean a better draw in the region quarterfinals.

The state produced three first-time district champions last year in Somerset in the 47th District, Estill County in the 56th District and Nicholas County in the 38th District. Somerset's first season was 2003 and Nicholas County's first varsity season came a year later. Somerset wound up hosting the 12th Region Tournament as a result.

More often than not, it is about overcoming a district opponent. Nicholas County was a prime example last year. Prior to 2025, Nicholas County had only taken one set from Harrison County in 42 meetings. The Jackets wound up taking seven this year with the first program win over the Fillies during the regular season then the district championship game.

One of these four teams could rise to the occasion this year. All four finished district runner-up last year and made it to the respective region tournaments.

Adair County (29-8)

The Indians once again set a school record for most wins in a season under head coach Michelle Neat's guidance. They made it to the 5th Region Tournament for the first time in program history, but could not overcome Taylor County in the district title game in a 3-2 (25-20, 25-8, 25-12). The Cardinals have won four straight 20th District titles. However, Adair County won both regular season games to earn the top seed in the district tournament.

Three seniors in libero [player_tooltip player_id='793716' first='Kinzlee' last='Akin'], setter Anslie Spoon and outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='828879' first='Addison' last='Spoon'] graduate so the Indians will have to find players to fill in those roles. However, they do return some talented hitters in [player_tooltip player_id='535275' first='Olivia' last='Mantooth'], [player_tooltip player_id='666959' first='Josie' last='Blair'] and [player_tooltip player_id='810234' first='Addie' last='Bowman'].

Todd County Central (16-12)

The Rebels came the closest they ever have to beating 13th District rival Logan County going back to at least 2001, 3-2 (18-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-20, 16-14) in the most recent district title game. Logan County has won a district championship every season dating back to 2002.

The Rebels will have to find ways to overcome the graduation of their top hitter in Alyssa Wofford and setter Shelby Holderman. However, Todd County Central returns the dynamic hitting junior [player_tooltip player_id='535201' first='Aubri' last='Penick'] in addition to junior libero [player_tooltip player_id='801424' first='Chloe' last='Collins'] and junior defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='938290' first='Naomi' last='Gammon'].

Entering her second season, head coach Brooke Wagoner noted freshmen [player_tooltip player_id='877548' first='Bailey' last='Brown'] and Ella Thompson are playing at Kentucky Premier Volleyball. Sophomore Mallory Werner is playing club at SKEVA and freshman Ava McDaniel is playing for BRAVO. Penick is playing at DIVA.

Sayre (29-9)

The Spartans surprised a number of people in the fall with their run to the first top seed in the 42nd District, going 4-0 in district seed play. While the Spartans edged Frederick Douglass, 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 20-25, 17-15), they lost the district championship rematch to the Broncos, 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-18, 25-18) in the district championship game before losing to Paul Laurence Dunbar in the region quarterfinals. The Spartans made the 11th Region Tournament for just the second time in program history.

Sayre caught attention with a run in the All "A" State Tournament to the Championship Flight Quarterfinals. The Spartans boast one of the state's top setters in junior [player_tooltip player_id='535188' first='Brooke' last='Barntsen']. The 6-0 Barntsen produces in all five statistical categories and has grown a lot so far during club season playing for the MAVA 17 Select team. The Spartans will still have a young team around Barntsen, but head coach Leigh Nahra is not worried about it knowing Barntsen will help put her teammates in the right positions to succeed.

The Spartans graduate four seniors including [player_tooltip player_id='533377' first='Eli' last='Powell'], who set up Barntsen on the outside a good bit since Barntsen is also Sayre's best hitter. The other four are defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='892190' first='Phoebe' last='Barlow'], hitter [player_tooltip player_id='814280' first='Jayda' last='Davis'] and opposite hitter Ellie Hiler. Nahra said freshman setter [player_tooltip player_id='892813' first='Decker' last='Kok'] gained valuable experience and expects Kok to step in at Powell's spot so Sayre can continue to run the 6-2 set.

Sayre also returns four key hitters in junior [player_tooltip player_id='892807' first='Aubrey' last='Greathouse'] along with sophomores [player_tooltip player_id='774762' first='Margot' last='Kinkead'], Savanna Cool and freshman [player_tooltip player_id='938308' first='Blair' last='Smarte']. Freshman [player_tooltip player_id='886496' first='Jace' last='Spencer'] is back after finishing second behind Barntsen in digs. Other key defensive specialists returning are sophomores Story Jones, [player_tooltip player_id='586858' first='Ainsley' last='Stump'] and freshman Harper Rice. Nahra also said to watch out for eighth grade right side Ashley Wagner and 5-10 freshman Aviana Barbour.

Beechwood (33-6)

The Tigers may have the best team returning on this list. However, Beechwood has the obstacle in the 35th District of besting one of the state's Dominant Five in the 10-time state champion Notre Dame Pandas and last year's state runner-up.

Beechwood has only taken three sets from Notre Dame in every meeting dating back to 2001. The good news is the Tiger junior varsity and freshman teams beat the Pandas on Sept. 17 of this past season. Beechwood won the first in-season All "A" State Tournament in the fall for the first time in program history not losing one set in the six games. The Tigers also won the first region quarterfinal game since 2017 and beat Dominant Five member St. Henry for the first time since 2015 in one of the three meetings.

The Tigers take some graduation hits on defense with senior libero [player_tooltip player_id='796736' first='Maggie' last='Dawson'] and defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='797739' first='Piper' last='Steinmetz'] graduating. Beechwood also graduates right side hitter [player_tooltip player_id='397726' first='Isabel' last='Bakker'] and outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='594624' first='Kendale' last='Lair']. However, setter [player_tooltip player_id='456668' first='Skylr' last='Estep'] along with the top three kills leaders in [player_tooltip player_id='484442' first='Isabel' last='O'Brien'], [player_tooltip player_id='484443' first='Macy' last='Armstrong'] and [player_tooltip player_id='456263' first='Rachel' last='Lewandowski']. The 6-3 [player_tooltip player_id='827943' first='Teegan' last='Becker'] also comes back to give Beechwood size in the middle.

Junior libero [player_tooltip player_id='795319' first='Kate' last='Harris'] also saw a good bit of action this fall. The Tigers have some talent coming up with the likes of Emma Harris, Charlotte Conway, [player_tooltip player_id='771296' first='Jayden' last='Fletcher'], Hailey Flaherty and [player_tooltip player_id='771298' first='Lynden' last='Davis'].

Blair helps the Indians go a long way with her size and net presence. She runs effective tandems helping take blockers away from teammates and putting balls down on solid middles. Blair can pound balls through double blocks and tip over to shallow open spaces to throw off opponents. Blair is especially effective on ones and gaps. Blair has good form on her blocks. Blair gets hands on balls if not outright turning them back. Blair is also a productive passer and an aggressive server. Blair had 377 kills, 32 solo blocks, 34 assisted blocks, 191 digs and 56 aces in the fall, helping Adair County go a school record 29-8, advance to the in-season Class 2A state semifinals and make it to the 5th Region Tournament for the first time in program history.

Gammon gives the Rebels a nice presence on defense. She consistently makes the routine passes and has great reaction on balls. Gammon can perform both the overhead and bump passes and handle a number of hard hits such as crosses and tips. She does not hesitate to lean or extend her arms to keep plays alive under control. Gammon had 166 digs in the fall, helping Todd County Central go 16-12 and make the 4th Region Tournament for the second year in a row.

Greathouse (pictured) has shown the ability to influence the net on both offense and defense. Greathouse makes things happen on ones and gaps. She is also not afraid to adjust in mid-air then shove balls to corners for big points. She'll benefit from the angles Barntsen is able to put balls to. Defensively, Greathouse reads hitters well and goes up for timely blocks. Greathouse forms sound double blocks with teammates. Greathouse had 120 kills, 28 solo and 34 assisted blocks in the fall, helping Sayre go 29-9 overall, driving to the in-season All "A" Championship Flight quarterfinals and make it to the 11th Region Tournament for just the second time in program history.

Harris could turn into a sound defender for the Tigers with more consistency. She has a nice low line drive serve. She has shown the ability to put up big numbers in digs in the past. Harris squares her arms up to balls nicely.
