10th Region Preview: Deep Bishop Brossart enters as favorites

The region has gone through the 37th District for years and this year looks to be no different.   The one thing that changes through is the Bishop Brossart 'Stangs are favored to win it for the first time since 2022. They finished 24-11 and hoped to challenge for the region crown last year, but lost in the district tournament semifinals after finishing region runner-up in 2024. Head coach Danielle French said one big key is getting out of their heads when they face Scott, which has won six in a row in the series since Bishop Brossart beat the Eagles in that 2022 region championship game.   Bishop Brossart returns all but two seniors in Madison Dozier and Peyton Marshall from last season's team thus the 'Stangs could be the deepest team in the region. A number of the players take advantage of the sound clubs in the area such as Northern Kentucky Volleyball Club and Northern Kentucky Junior Volleyball.   Senior [player_tooltip player_id='484451' first='Aubrey' last='Rebholz'] returns for her fifth season on varsity. She stepped in to set when the 'Stangs won that region championship in 2022 after an injury. Senior 6-2 middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='515259' first='Callie' last='Ritter'] and senior defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='569742' first='Josie' last='Reckner'] bring three years of varsity experience back. Three other seniors in [player_tooltip player_id='988769' first='Claire' last='Decker'], [player_tooltip player_id='732580' first='Leah' last='Robinson'] in the middle and [player_tooltip player_id='832519' first='Hailey' last='Heitker'] on the outside hope to bring great balance to the team.   A number of players from the younger grades also bring back experience. Sophomore outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='885299' first='Evelyn' last='Laker'] leads the way with junior libero [player_tooltip player_id='587827' first='Grace' last='Frommeyer'] returning after starting there the last two seasons. Sophomore outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='885509' first='Emma' last='Sheanshang'] also showed a lot of promise along with freshman setter/outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='912039' first='Jayna' last='Wilson']. Wilson stepped in to set when Rebholz got injured last season with freshman [player_tooltip player_id='891600' first='Audrey' last='Arnold'] earning valuable experience at outside hitter and defensive specialist.   French said she has enjoyed the effort the players have brought in the preseason trying to better themselves and each other daily. French said the focus has been increasing the pace of play and develop a faster, more dynamic offense. The team hopes to become even stronger at the net than last year. French also noted this group has the potential to be one of the best teams defensively that's ever been there and they've maintained the required focus and intensity to stay there every single day.   Bishop Brossart takes on Dayton on Aug. 17 to start the season.   40th District   Montgomery County Indians (16-17)   The Indians could challenge for the region crown with their size with five players standing 5-10 and taller.   Junior 6-0 middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='755626' first='Erin' last='Fawns'] is coming off a strong club season at Lexington United with 5-11 senior middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='603805' first='Baylee' last='Warner'] also coming back after leading the team in blocks last year. Three of the kills leaders may have graduated, but two juniors in 5-10 outside/opposite hitter [player_tooltip player_id='508423' first='Anna' last='Allison'] and 6-0 middle blocker/outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='942903' first='Kinley' last='Auxier'] showed great potential during club season for Bluegrass Reign. Head coach Bradley Craycraft also said junior 5-11 [player_tooltip player_id='1011269' first='Ava' last='Hudson'] will probably step in to play six rotations.   Senior [player_tooltip player_id='882112' first='Sophie' last='Fouch'] returns at libero after an outstanding season last year. Senior defensive specialist Hagan Stilz along with freshman Kylee Schultz at defensive specialist/setter hope to help solidify things on defense. Craycraft said the new setter will be junior Meredith Miles. He said as long as the Indians pass well, they can be a tough match for almost any opponent.   Montgomery County hosts Estill County on Aug. 17 to start the season.   George Rogers Clark Cardinals (22-10)   Kainan Hudson has taken the Cardinals from a struggling program to region contender during his time on the sidelines. GRC made the region championship for the first time in program history last year, losing to Scott.   The Cardinals graduated six seniors including their top hitter in Teigh Yeast and will have to overcome the loss of junior 6-3 middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='918961' first='Hollins' last='Pumphrey'] for the season as the result of an injury. However, junior outside hitter/defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='776724' first='Brooke' last='Gough'] is back along with junior setter [player_tooltip player_id='850203' first='Anna' last='Cooper']. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='941895' first='Addison' last='Palmer'] also returns at libero.   Hudson also said he also sees sophomore pin hitter [player_tooltip player_id='963197' first='Elayna' last='Swart'] and 6-0 sophomore middle Libby McCormick stepping forward this season. The Cardinals also saw sophomore defensive specialist Eva Walker transfer in from Frederick Douglass and aims to make an impact in the back row.   Hudson said the returning players have put forth the dedication to make it back to the region championship. Hudson added the biggest thing the team has started to utliize to take next steps is consistency in how they work and prepare as well as the great strength and conditioning program the players have bought into last year and currently this season.   GRC travels to Henry Clay to start the season on Aug. 18.   Paris Hounds (8-16)   Kelly Goodwin takes over a program entering its fifth varsity season. The Hounds won eight games last season after winning a school record 13 in 2024.   The Hounds have great size in sophomores Gabby Gardner, a 6-1 middle/setter and 6-2 outside/right side [player_tooltip player_id='946052' first='Emmalyn' last='Ogden']. Gardner will set for Paris along with sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='850571' first='Mia' last='Mason'].   Goodwin credited the two seniors in libero [player_tooltip player_id='960865' first='Angie' last='Roque-Romero'] and outside hitter/setter [player_tooltip player_id='603211' first='Molly' last='Mason'] for making a smooth transition to the new coaching staff. Goodwin said they lead by example and take on a lot of responsibility. Two sophomores in [player_tooltip player_id='960871' first='Emma' last='Morris'] and [player_tooltip player_id='960868' first='Aniya' last='Hayden'] are looking to contribute on defense with freshman [player_tooltip player_id='960873' first='Rose' last='Hayden'] hoping to contribute in the middle.   Goodwin said the team chemistry has been strong between the player for years. Goodwin noted she's trying to build trust with the players, adding if the players embrace the process and work to achieve smaller goals, they can build a great season. Goodwin also said she's excited to see junior varsity players who have not played on varsity move up into those roles this season.   Paris starts the season the season Aug. 18 at home against Robertson County.   Bourbon County Colonels (8-17)   The Colonels struggled with youth in key positions last year, but the hope is the lumps turn into dividends with Lauren Eads' return to the sidelines after one season away. They graduated five seniors including setter Marleigh Estes, who is cheerleading at Morehead State. Freshman [player_tooltip player_id='879769' first='Kinley' last='Kearns'] and sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='960435' first='Hailey' last='Stanfield'] did some setting last year and could fill in that role.   Bourbon got a boost with size when junior 6-0 outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='612107' first='Katie' last='Abner'] transferred in from Paris. Junior outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='879766' first='Hayli' last='Burberry'], sophomore middle/outside [player_tooltip player_id='930503' first='Gia' last='Griffin'] and junior outside hitter/defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='960438' first='Maggie' last='Justice'] hope to give the Colonels offensive balance.   Eads is big on seeing the Colonels stay on the attack and not back on their heels. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='757907' first='Izzy' last='Jett'], junior Claire Davis and two sophomores in setter/defensive specialist Isabella Davis and [player_tooltip player_id='960440' first='Jaymeson' last='Jones'] hope to give Bourbon County great play starting that with crisp first touches. Izabella Goff, [player_tooltip player_id='998722' first='Mia' last='Young'], Alonna Thacker and Carter Conley round out the roster.   Bourbon County travels to Mason County on Aug. 17 to start the season in Class 2A Tournament play-in game.   39th District   Bracken County Bears (26-8)   The Bears have broken school records for wins in each of the past few seasons. That pace may be tough to keep up with the graduation of six seniors, but head coach Julie Krift said the returning players are ready for the challenge, noting they get along well and are working together to continue to work toward another sound season.   Last year's assists leader in senior setter [player_tooltip player_id='535232' first='Rees' last='Hargett'] is back along with two sound junior hitters in pin hitter [player_tooltip player_id='805758' first='Isabella' last='Godman'] and middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='819271' first='Sophie' last='Bachman']. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='795859' first='Kyndall' last='Johnson'] is also back after a nice season at defensive specialist. Krift also said senior outside hitter Halle Routt is one of the most consistent hitters she's ever seen and senior Aleigha Leist will take over the libero spot.   Krift added Bracken County added the likes of Newport Central Catholic and Campbell County to strengthen the schedule and prepare the team for the postseason. The Bears open the season Aug. 17 at home against Lewis County.   Mason County Royals (22-13)   The Royals broke the school record for wins in a season and it led to the first region tournament appearance since 2019.   With the transfer of last year's junior setter to a district rival, Mason County will be breaking in freshman Karsyn Dotson to the spot, but head coach Nellie Book said the team has confidence in her as she's been freshman and junior varsity setter the past two seasons and played middle school ball in the spring. Book also said freshman Kate Davenport could see some action at defensive specialist this year.   The Royals graduated some key players such as libero Halle Pfeffer, but they have six seniors this year. Senior Raylee Dotson will take over the libero spot with fellow seniors Aaliyah Burns and [player_tooltip player_id='930479' first='Hayley' last='Allison'] also playing in the back row. Book said senior outsides Mylie Padgett, [player_tooltip player_id='930486' first='Reagan' last='Workman'], senior middle Emmy Henderson and junior middle Darcy Fields are strong hitters.   Book said the team has been working hard in the summer and seen great improvement. They played a number of games prior to the Dead Period and Book said they feel great going into the regular season. It begins at home Aug. 17 against Bourbon County in a Class 2A Tournament Play in game.   Augusta Panthers (13-9)   Augusta managed a winning season in Paige McCord's first season as head coach. With the graduation of just one senior, the Panthers hope to make it back to the region tournament after missing it for the first time since 2021 last year.   The Panthers have six seniors this year mixed in with what McCord describes as a solid group of sophomores to form a strong team. McCord is especially excited about sophomore 5-10 middle blocker Aryanna Davis. Davis had 23 kills in the district semifinal game against Mason County.   Seniors [player_tooltip player_id='828741' first='Adalen' last='Gilliam'] at middle blocker/outside hitter and middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='812494' first='Claire' last='Elliott'] are returning starters along with outside hitter and vocal leader Natalee Roberts. Another senior is Mason County transfer [player_tooltip player_id='603851' first='Kyleigh' last='Kirk'] at setter. McCord said Kirk has stepped into the role and been a great leder to the younger players. Two other sophomores with a lot of varsity experience are setter Kahghan Hinson and outside hitter Sammie Young.   Augusta opens the season Aug. 17 at home against Harrison County.   St. Patrick Saints (9-18)   Kelli Neeley takes over a program with just one senior, but some young talent.   Neeley listed keys to success as sticking to good fundamentals such as strong serving, getting passes up and the hitters in position to put across good down balls. Neeley added she'd like to see good defense and consistent offense this season. The good news is Neeley said she has a great group of girls. Two sisters in freshman outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='1011226' first='Mia' last='Neeley'] and eighth grade libero Ella Neeley along with sophomore setter/defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='1011227' first='Jenna' last='Cummins'] lead the way.   St Patrick hosts Robertson County on Aug. 17 to begin the season.   <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/user-uploads/KinleyAuxier.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-943515" /></figure>   38th District   Harrison County (18-14)   The Fillies hope this is the year to return to the top of the district where they'd won it 11 years in a row from 2013 to 2023 before finishing runner-up the last two years and seeing their seasons end in the region quarterfinals.   The Fillies once again graduated a large class with seven seniors including twin sisters Lexie and Lauren Highlander along with Shyanne Ross, but the Fillies tend to reload. Both middle blockers in [player_tooltip player_id='532789' first='Audree' last='Whitaker'] and junior Mae Heimlich are back. Head coach Bill Faulkner said seniors [player_tooltip player_id='941450' first='Maci' last='Ware'] and Jaicee Hamilton will be the outsides with Emma Bailey playing opposite. Faulkner added Taylor Florence will take over the setter role with several girls battling for time in the back row in addition to Hamilton and Ware. They are seniors Kaitlyn Montgomery, Brooke Sowder, Lyla Feagan in addition to Paisley Hicks and Mia Armijo.   Faulkner said he's liking the team chemistry in the preseason thus, he believes they'll bond well as a team. Harrison County travels to Augusta on Aug. 17 to start the season.   Nicholas County Jackets (18-6)   Excitement hit Carlisle last fall as the Jackets brough home the first district championship in program history. The next goal is to not only repeat but earn the first region tournament win in program history.   Nicholas County graduated six seniors off that team, but senior [player_tooltip player_id='757958' first='Alison' last='Reid'] returns at setter and defensive specialist along with senior outside hitter Loralee Orazen. Others need to step in to fill roles. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='896412' first='Danica' last='Amburgey'] at outside/middle saw significant varsity action last year. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='991280' first='Abigail' last='McNabb'] could also step in at defensive specialist or middle blocker.   Nicholas County travels to Mason County on Aug. 18.   Pendleton County (4-27)   Megan Rigney-Smith took over the program with the goal of no more rebuilds after the Cats dropped from district champions in 2024 to the bottom of the district last season. The hope is to see more talented players come in after a good class graduates.   Freshman setter/outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='1011661' first='Hadley' last='Spaulding'] is back after getting her feet wet on the varsity level last year. She has two nice middles to set in senior [player_tooltip player_id='1011657' first='Kylie' last='Dunn'] and sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1011659' first='Kenzi' last='Mastin']. Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1011658' first='Alayna' last='Gosney'] hopes to give the Cats balance on the outside with senior [player_tooltip player_id='1011654' first='Elizabeth' last='Ammerman'] at opposite/setter bringing club experience to the team.   Smith also said she hopes to bring the joy of the sport back for the team. She said they're learning to work together as a team and listed communication and team chemistry as two other areas of focus during the preseason.   Pendleton County hosts St. Patrick's on Aug. 18 to start the season.   Robertson County Devils (4-23)   The Devils have a different head coach for the first time in a while as Kelsey Turner steps after Ann Grause led the program for more than 20 years. Turner is not a new face to the players as she assisted Grause the last two seasons, thus Turner is familiar with the player personalities.   Robertson County returns four seniors and one junior that played in at least 24 games last year. Senior outside/middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='1010223' first='Addisston' last='Flack'] and senior setter [player_tooltip player_id='1010224' first='Peyton' last='Jolly'] lead the way.   Turner agreed improvement on first touches on both defense and serve reception are keys to the Devils taking steps forward. Turner said she has high hopes for the team, noting the group is resilient and adding the players ask a lot of questions trying to get better.   Robertson County travels to St. Patrick on Aug. 17 to start the season.   37th District   Scott Eagles (29-12)   It's hard to dismiss the notion the Eagles may not be region contenders after winning it the previous two seasons, including the second trip to the state semifinals in program history in 2024. However, Scott will look different without six key seniors from last year including three-time region player of the year outside hitter Milyn Minor, who took her talents to Lincoln Memorial.   Junior libero [player_tooltip player_id='877753' first='Emory' last='Sullivan'] is back along with junior pin hitter [player_tooltip player_id='734852' first='Jacinda' last='Campbell']. Sophomore outside hitter Kinley Dunford saw significant time last year with junior middle/opposite hitter Makenna Conley giving the Eagles size at 6-0.   Veteran head coach Andrea Sullivan said the team might have some growing pains early, but the goal is to peak at tournament time. Coach Sullivan noted the lineup could change throughout the season and the goal is to improve one percent daily and even grow together throughout the year.   The first game listed on the schedule is Aug. 20 at Walton-Verona.   Calvary Christian Cougars (24-8)   The Cougars have been a pesky team for a while so it was a matter of time before they broke through in the rugged district. That time came last year when Calvary stunned Bishop Brossart in the district semifinals to make the first region tournament appearance in program history. The Cougars also knocked off Nicholas County to win the first region tournament game in program history.   Calvary graduated three seniors including power hitter Anna Hickey. However, sophomore libero [player_tooltip player_id='896714' first='Madison' last='Stelzer'] is back along with junior outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='779514' first='Megan' last='Arthur'] and sophomore setter/outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='918951' first='Natalia' last='McGlynn'].   Head coach Becky Stelzer listed Patience and Fight as keys to success this season. The patience factor comes with no seniors on the roster and with adjustments and mistakes. The fighting mentality will be vital in terms of battling for every point. Coach Stelzer added nothing will be given to the Cougars.   Calvary Christian takes on Highlands in Fort Thomas on Aug. 17.   Campbell County Camels (6-18)   The Camels won the region in 2023, but have struggled the last two seasons winning just 13 games. New head coach Alicia Rice takes over hoping to help the Camels return to where they've been in the past.   Campbell County returns the kills leader from last year in senior right side hitter [player_tooltip player_id='882255' first='Amerie' last='Mullins'] and the digs leader in senior defensive specialist Kendyl Hartman. Another senior defensive specialist in [player_tooltip player_id='793055' first='Chloe' last='Hardcorn'] also returns. Senior pin hitter [player_tooltip player_id='603546' first='Chloe' last='Hershey'] also returns to the high school court for the first time in two years. Senior middle blocker Lydia Fry also returns with multiple years of varsity experience.   Rice said the girls have been very receptive to her ideas and are very excited about the season. She said ball control and IQ of the game are the biggest priorities in the preseason to help keep confidence levels high. Rice said the goal is to return to the fundamentals of the game and be a scrappy team more than a power team now.   The biggest loss to graduation is multi-year starting setter Hope Hamilton along with Faith Whitford. Rice said three players are vying for the setter spot currently.   Campbell County hosts Simon Kenton on Aug. 18 to begin the Rice Era.   Players to Watch    Arnold (main picture) displayed the skills to turn into a sound all-around player as an eighth grader. Arnold has active hands and can make great adjustments on redirected balls. She also puts up sound double blocks. She only dives out of necessity, but under control. Arnold has developed good range and could give the 'Stangs another nice offensive weapon with solid swings.     Auxier (bottom picture) is poised to make a splash for the Indians this season. Auxier's presence could help take blockers away from teammates. She makes a lot of things happen with ones and mixes in soft touches to keep opponents guessing. Auxier has been working to improve her offensive rhythm and ball control. She also displayed good form on her blocks. Auxier swats down attempted tips near her.     Palmer brings back nice experience at the libero spot for the Cardinals. Palmer steps toward balls and makes nice overhead and bump passes, keeping her body aimed at the target with a nice platform. Palmer has also displayed good range. Palmer scores quick points with a sizzling serve and is extremely energetic on the court.     Ogden showed the potential to dominate the front row during club season. Ogden gets on top of balls and a is learning to use her height to rip off balls with a high attack point and quicker arm swing. Her blocking techinque also took big steps forward in the spring. Paris head coach Kelly Goodwin said she'd like to see Ogden get quicker on her footwork when blocking and transitioning to hit.     Hargett does a great job running the offense and involving a number of hitters. Hargett executes a variety of sets and mixes in set-overs to catch opponents by surprise. She makes good first touches then quickly transitions into attack mode. Hargett executes roll shots with precision.
