Five State Championships. Ten Teams. One Last Match.

We've made it to Hot Springs. After three days of state tournament volleyball, we're down to ten teams and five championship matches. Some of these teams have been on a collision course all season. Others had to knock off a favorite or two just to get here. What I like about this year's finals is the history between several of these teams. We've got conference rivals, regional rematches, defending champions and some players who have had outstanding tournament performances.

Here's how we got here and what I can't wait to see in person.

2A | Hackett vs. Mansfield

Saturday, 7 p.m.

These two know each other about as well as any teams in the state. Hackett and Mansfield have met four times this season, with Hackett winning three. Mansfield won the August 25 meeting in four sets, but Hackett answered with victories on September 10, October 14 and October 21. The last meeting was a three-set sweep in the regional championship. Now they get a fifth meeting, and this one is for a state championship.

Hackett is chasing a third consecutive 2A title. Mansfield won the 3A championship last year before moving to 2A, so we're guaranteed a defending state champion will leave Hot Springs with another trophy. Hackett defeated Taylor in four sets in the semifinals. The Hornets have relied on senior setter [player_tooltip player_id='744272' first='Catelyn' last='Edwards'], outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='749847' first='Ryleigh' last='Decker'] and a balanced group that includes [player_tooltip player_id='1017880' first='Bailey' last='Edwards'] and [player_tooltip player_id='821349' first='Kali' last='Reather']. Mansfield had a much tougher semifinal, surviving Cotter in five sets. That's significant considering Cotter's size and the offensive production of the McNutt sisters. Mansfield's [player_tooltip player_id='1007098' first='Adeline' last='Godwin'] and libero [player_tooltip player_id='1057476' first='Bailey' last='Quick'] have been important parts of its run.

Match up I can't wait to see:

Adeline is one of those players that does not get the attention she deserves. At 5'5" most would look at her and see a DS/L or a setter. But a high flying outside?? You better believe it. Godwin finished the five setter semifinal battle with Cotter with 25 kills, 27 assists, and 4 aces. Watching video back on the game, she is a very intelligent hitter. She rarely hits to the same place on the court twice, has a solid cross and can hit line when needed. Adeline is also a high IQ setter that can run a quick game that really throws bigger teams off. Cotter had the size, Mansfield had the speed. She is going to be a key to how Mansfield is able to keep Hackett off balance.

I'll see you one 5'5" attacker, and raise you another. Decker had 16 kills, 9 digs, and 26 receptions with no errors in the 3-1 semifinal win over Taylor. Watching Decker's highlights from the Taylor match, Ryleigh showed considerable skill of finding the seam on multiple occasions. She proved to be reliable on out of system balls, maintaining control and keeping the Hornets in the point. I saw several hard line shots along with some nice soft touches to keep the defense off guard. She has piled up 570 kills, 220 aces and 689 digs in her three varsity seasons with Hackett. Decker is looking to go out on top for all three of those seasons. Something that hasn't been done in school history. There will be no surprises.

3A | Mayflower vs. Fountain Lake

Saturday, 11 a.m.

We just saw this matchup in the 3A South Regional championship, and it took five sets to settle it. Fountain Lake came away with the win, but Mayflower showed it could play with the Cobras. Setter [player_tooltip player_id='1007360' first='Chloe' last='Whittington'] finished that meeting with 36 assists, 19 digs and five aces. Mayflower has probably had the more surprising road to Hot Springs. The Lady Eagles knocked off top-ranked Crowley's Ridge Academy in four sets in the quarterfinals, then swept Harrisburg in the semifinals, 25-14, 25-15 and 25-22.

Whittington has been a major part of that offense, with [player_tooltip player_id='1007418' first='Jordan' last='Fusilier'], [player_tooltip player_id='749876' first='Patience' last='Webb'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1045208' first='Millee' last='Gordon'] giving Mayflower several attacking options. Fountain Lake hasn't exactly taken the easy route either. The Lady Cobras came from two sets down to beat Conway Christian in the regional championship, then swept Newport and Charleston at state. They handled Charleston in the semifinals, 25-20, 25-9 and 25-18. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='830223' first='Baylee' last='Hedges'] has been a key player for Fountain Lake, particularly with her ability to contribute in both the front and back rows.

Mayflower has already proven it can beat a favorite. Fountain Lake has already beaten Mayflower. We'll see which matters more Saturday. This should be fun!

The biggest challenge on paper from the last meeting between these two was the hitting percentage of Mayflower. As a team they had 33 hitting errors and that was a big hurdle to overcome. They also had 19 reception errors. That is tough to win a title with. If I were the Eagles, I would lean on Patience a little more. She hit .435 with 10 kills and hit .334 for the season. She's a big, powerful middle/right-side that can hit from anywhere. She had 13 kills verses CRA and I would hope they will set the lefty more. Cut down on the errors, feed the middle. This one is going to be a banger.

McKellar is a powerful pin/setter. When she gets on top of the ball she really can put it down. Aliyah and fellow senior [player_tooltip player_id='830223' first='Baylee' last='Hedges'] have a great connection. I went back and watched some earlier film on them and Mckellar gives Hedges a good clean ball to attack with. She can set from just about anywhere on the court and is a weapon from pins.

Fountain Lake is going to be tough to beat in the finals. If McKellar and Hedges are hot, it could be a quick match.

4A | Bauxite vs. Brookland

Saturday, 1 p.m.

Bauxite has spent the week playing in front of its home crowd, and the Lady Miners have taken advantage of it. They swept Westside in the quarterfinals before beating Haskell Harmony Grove in four sets in the semifinals. The Bauxite offense revolves around two players I've enjoyed following, [player_tooltip player_id='769825' first='Asa' last='Perry'] and [player_tooltip player_id='764421' first='Rylee' last='Ferrell']. It seems like yesterday we were watching Ferrell set Perry, then Perry turn around and set Ferrell. Both can run the offense and both can put the ball away. That flexibility has been a big part of Bauxite's success.

Brookland comes in after one of the more impressive semifinal performances of the tournament. The Lady Bearcats swept Pottsville, 25-15, 25-10 and 25-20. [player_tooltip player_id='1008021' first='Lynley' last='Seyler'] finished with 14 kills and 11 digs, while [player_tooltip player_id='751454' first='Leah' last='Snearly'] added 16 assists, eight digs and three aces. Brookland also has Finley Lawless on the outside and sophomore setter [player_tooltip player_id='1049560' first='Kyleigh' last='Combs'] helping run an offense that has been productive all season. Brookland has been one of the top teams in 4A from the beginning. Bauxite has been right there with them.

This is the kind of championship matchup we hoped we'd get when the season started.

On an experienced senior laden team, there is a sophomore that really stands out. I was in attendance for the 4A semi finals and let me tell ya, this kid is explosive. If [player_tooltip player_id='769825' first='Asa' last='Perry'] is the calmed, controlled leader, AJ is the emotional barometer of the team. She's is brash, loud and excitable, but she is also a heck of a player. Barnes dominates the net when she is out there, I watched her drop 49 kills and 20 blocks in 8 matches earlier this year. AJ is very light on her feet and closes the seam well or can take on just about anyone 1-1. She plays up to the moment and even though she is excitable, she still remains under control. She's worth the price of admission as is the entire team.

When someone goes down to injury, some one has to step it up. When Kinely Hammett went down, I wasn't sure how Brookland would respond, but respond they did. Six players with over 100 kills. Tops among those was Lynley with a whooping 472 kills and hitting .297. That is incredible when you consider the 1174 attempts. Seyler improved in every category for Brookland. Having to replace 301 kills from Hammett was a tall order. Lynley also dropped 45 aces this season along with 383 digs. She is going to have to keep up her state tournament run going after a 22 kill/.351 hitting % performance against Baptist Prep and a 14 kill/.467 hitting % performance against Pottsville. Brookland has been one of my favorite teams to follow this year. Can't wait for this showdown!

5A | Mount St. Mary's vs. Valley View

Saturday, 3 p.m.

These two have already met once this season, with Valley View taking a two-set tournament victory on August 29. Valley View has been one of the state's strongest programs again this year, but its trip to Hot Springs wasn't without a challenge. The Lady Blazers needed five sets to get past Greenbrier in the quarterfinals before sweeping Farmington in the semifinals. Mount St. Mary's took a different route, beating defending 5A champion Marion in four sets in the quarterfinals before sweeping a red hot Greenwood team in the semifinals.

I've followed several of the younger players at Mount St. Mary's this season, including [player_tooltip player_id='989056' first='Finley' last='Rice']. The Belles have continued to improve, and knocking off Marion was a big step toward reaching this championship match. Valley View has the experience and has already beaten Mount St. Mary's once. The Belles have played some of their best volleyball during the postseason. The first meeting was back in August. Both teams have played a lot of volleyball since then. Everyone was predicting a Marion vs Farmington rematch. Instead we get the two teams that knocked them off and two top 10 player of the year candidates in [player_tooltip player_id='746203' first='Taylor' last='Wherry'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1008480' first='Kate' last='Calhoon'] facing off here. There are other players that are going to have to step up to pull of the win for the title.

Stars will be on display for both clubs, no doubt about it. A big key all season for Valley View is "The other middle" [player_tooltip player_id='1010951' first='Meredith' last='Supine']. All she has done in the state tournament is hit .545 against Lakeside, .394 against Greenbrier and .240 against one of the best blocking front lines in the state against Farmington. In those three matches he had 33 kills. Supine provides size and quickness at the net and another offensive weapon to go along with [player_tooltip player_id='1008480' first='Kate' last='Calhoon'] (50 kills) and [player_tooltip player_id='807048' first='Peyton' last='Prater'] (27 kills).

They are going to have to keep that pace up against a team that has shut down two of the best offenses in the state already. Mount held Greenwood to a .110 hitting % and .109 hitting % for Marion.

Coach Olivia Stroud told me recently, "We have a really strong front row and depending on that day, one of those kiddos will win the game for us. The front row of [player_tooltip player_id='1058348' first='Maggie' last='McNulty'], [player_tooltip player_id='746203' first='Taylor' last='Wherry'], Gracie, Gandy Marley, [player_tooltip player_id='883883' first='Catherine' last='Anderson'] and [player_tooltip player_id='989056' first='Finley' last='Rice']." That is a solid group and provides Mount with depth that can just keep coming at you.

The Hornets have relied on senior setter Catelyn Edwards Catelyn Edwards Catelyn Edwards 5'9" | S/RS Hackett Highschool | 2027 State AR , outside hitter Ryleigh Decker Ryleigh Decker Ryleigh Decker OH/S Hackett | 2027 State AR and a balanced group that includes Bailey Edwards Bailey Edwards Bailey Edwards 5'9" | RS/S Hackett | 2029 State AR and Kali Reather Kali Reather MH AR . Mansfield had a much tougher semifinal, surviving Cotter in five sets. That's significant considering Cotter's size and the offensive production of the McNutt sisters. Mansfield's Adeline Godwin Adeline Godwin Adeline Godwin 5'5" | S/OH Mansfield | 2028 State AR and libero Bailey Quick Bailey Quick Bailey Quick 5'4" | DS/L Mansfield | 2028 AR have been important parts of its run.

3A | Mayflower vs. Fountain Lake

Saturday, 11 a.m.

We just saw this matchup in the 3A South Regional championship, and it took five sets to settle it. Fountain Lake came away with the win, but Mayflower showed it could play with the Cobras. Setter Chloe Whittington Chloe Whittington Chloe Whittington 5'6" | S Mayflower | 2027 State AR finished that meeting with 36 assists, 19 digs and five aces. Mayflower has probably had the more surprising road to Hot Springs. The Lady Eagles knocked off top-ranked Crowley's Ridge Academy in four sets in the quarterfinals, then swept Harrisburg in the semifinals, 25-14, 25-15 and 25-22.

Whittington has been a major part of that offense, with Jordan Fusilier Jordan Fusilier Jordan Fusilier 5'8" | OH/DS/L Mayflower | 2027 State AR , Patience Webb Patience Webb Patience Webb 5'10" | OH Mayflower | 2027 AR and Millee Gordon Millee Gordon Millee Gordon 5'6" | OH/RS Mayflower | 2029 State AR giving Mayflower several attacking options. Fountain Lake hasn't exactly taken the easy route either. The Lady Cobras came from two sets down to beat Conway Christian in the regional championship, then swept Newport and Charleston at state. They handled Charleston in the semifinals, 25-20, 25-9 and 25-18. Senior Baylee Hedges Baylee Hedges Baylee Hedges 5'8" | OH/DS/L Fountain Lake | 2027 AR has been a key player for Fountain Lake, particularly with her ability to contribute in both the front and back rows.

The Bauxite offense revolves around two players I've enjoyed following, Asa Perry Asa Perry Asa Perry 5'8" | S/DS/L Bauxite | 2028 State AR and Rylee Ferrell Rylee Ferrell OH Bauxite | 2028 State AR .

Lynley Seyler Lynley Seyler Lynley Seyler 5'8" | OH Brookland | 2028 State AR finished with 14 kills and 11 digs, while Leah Snearly Leah Snearly Leah Snearly 5'7" | S/RS Brookland | 2028 State AR added 16 assists, eight digs and three aces. Brookland also has Finley Lawless on the outside and sophomore setter Kyleigh Combs Kyleigh Combs Kyleigh Combs 5'6" | S/RS Brookland | 2029 AR helping run an offense that has been productive all season. Brookland has been one of the top teams in 4A from the beginning. Bauxite has been right there with them.

This is the kind of championship matchup we hoped we'd get when the season started.

Lynley Seyler

Mary's this season, including Finley Rice Finley Rice Finley Rice 5'10" | OH Mount St. Mary's | 2030 State AR . The Belles have continued to improve, and knocking off Marion was a big step toward reaching this championship match. Valley View has the experience and has already beaten Mount St. Mary's once.
