What a way to kick it off.

Class A, B, and C1 led off our first wave of quarterfinals from Pinnacle Bank Arena. Wednesday's matches featured plenty of stellar individual performances, and we've got the instant scoop on who stood out.

Let's waste no time.

While we're on the topic of "wasting no time," Piening and Norris were quick to reestablish their frontrunner status in the Class B race. This junior star made the most of trips across the front row, amassing double-digit kills in Wednesday's sweep over York. Piening's quickness behind the setter has become the key to opening up Norris' pin-to-pin offense.

Wardyn delivered the kind of all-around performance we expected from such a high-volume scorer. She paced York's kill column by a wide margin and was particularly effective in out-of-system situations. Her work in club and high school venues has revealed Wardyn's willingness to play on either pin and find success.

The Lauenstein tandem was as advertised as Waverly gutted out a four-set win over Lincoln Pius X. Gracie's scoring prowess propelled the Vikings through some tight situations, but her first touches were perhaps the biggest storyline of Wednesday's gauntlet. Her presence in middle-back, both as a floor defender and passer, proved Lauenstein's readiness for the collegiate level. This is a worthy final act.

Mertens brought back all the breathtaking defensive plays that made her a standout with this spring's Premier Nebraska 15 Gold crew. This sophomore libero has a knack for jumping into open seams and protecting the "campfire" from roll shots. Lincoln Pius X's ability to defend and transition kept the 'Bolts in play against one of Class B's top powerhouses.

Every efficient offense has a centerpiece that binds everything together. Bowman fills that role for GI Northwest. This senior setter has been putting up big numbers since the beginning of her prep career, but this final trip to Lincoln has given us a new level of excellence. Bowman's pin-to-pin distribution guided the Vikings to a eye-catching sweep over Omaha Skutt Catholic, bringing GINW back into the championship spotlight.

This year's SkyHawks operated through an enviable lineup of pin hitters, and Zajicek was among the best. We've seen her command the right antenna, particularly while competing with [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] on the club side. However, her range and power make her an ideal go-to on the left for Skutt Catholic.

We were treated to one more display of John's all-around influence at Wednesday's quarterfinals. This outgoing senior finished her career with back-to-back trips to Lincoln while putting up some of Gering's best-ever scoring numbers. John topped that leaderboard once more in the Bulldogs' battle with Gretna.

What can't Donner do? We have fond memories of her show-stopping performances on the right pin for Premier Nebraska 15 Gold. She has shifted that narrative to the left side for Gretna. The Dragons already had a loaded frontcourt heading into the 2026 campaign, but Donner has provided a little more heat along the net. She didn't need much time to reach double-digit kills in Wednesday's straight-set win.

Omaha Concordia was the same blocking force we remembered from last year's tournament. However, Samuelson and her teammates have somehow managed to upgrade their net defense en route to this year's No. 1 seed in Class C1. The Mustangs needed some momentum-building plays to stave off pressure from Norfolk Catholic, and Samuelson often delivered by putting up the roof.

Norfolk Catholic's late-season run was a compelling storyline in the C1 race. The Knights scored a big district final upset and did not look out of place in Wednesday's quarterfinals. Timmerman anchored the charge through some spectacular hitting coverage and secondary setting in out-of-system situations. Her influence goes beyond the platform.

We got a firsthand look at why few teams have been able to topple Bishop Neumann this season. The Cavaliers boast plenty of high-scoring weapons, but ball control might be the defining trait of this team. Cada proves that outside hitters can be leaders in this phase, too. Her ten kills in a three-set sweep were impressive, but don't lose sight of Cada's persistence coverage in long rallies.

Green has been a pin-hitting workhorse since her freshman days at Lincoln Lutheran, so we weren't surprised to see her leadership flourish again at PBA. Like many of the attackers we've discussed here, Green has oscillated between both antennas throughout her prep career. Her ability to work from pass to attack has allowed her to carve a featured role on the outside with the Warriors.

The Nebraska commit finds new ways to surprise us. We've always known about her sky-high contact point and indefensible heat. She's racking up kills at a nearly unprecedented clip this fall. But we were most impressed by Rautenberg's willingness to rally her teammates as Kearney Catholic exerted pressure in Wednesday's contest. A Set 3 comeback secured the sweep, with Rautenberg putting down her 25th kill on match point.

We feel like Kearney Catholic has been operating through its middles for a while. The Stars have boasted plenty of talent at this position for a while, and Seim added to the firepower for this year's crew. She is a stellar first-tempo attacker who could carve angles around one-on-one blocks. Seim had the full array of shots in her final prep outing.

This has clearly been a worthy addition to the Pierce lineup. Werner wasted no time making an impression with the Bluejays this fall, racking up the team's second-best kill total. That trend continued in Wednesday's quarterfinal, with Werner achieving a double-double as Pierce mounted its Set 4 comeback. This junior looks poised for a major leadership role next fall.

Chamness bring infectious energy to the libero position. Perhaps we can credit her experience as a pin hitter, where Chamness has showcased her explosiveness on the club side. Either way, her quick reads in the back row make her an ideal fit for Aurora's contrasting jersey. A big-time quarterfinal upset requires some stout backcourt work.

Elkhorn North has already seen its share of spectacular slide hitters in its short history.
