Juneteenth Spotlight: 22 Athletes Elevating Nevada Volleyball

Juneteenth serves as a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the progress made by generations who helped create opportunities for those who followed. It is also a time to recognize individuals who continue making an impact within their communities, classrooms, and athletic arenas. Across Nevada volleyball, black athletes are helping elevate the game through their talent, leadership, determination, and competitive spirit.   This Juneteenth, Prep Dig Nevada is shining a spotlight on black athletes who are helping shape the future of Nevada volleyball and leaving their mark on the sport both on and off the court.    For Shaliyah, Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, equality, and the achievements of African Americans throughout history.   <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"> Juneteenth means celebrating freedom and honoring the struggles and achievements of African Americans. </blockquote>   She believes the holiday serves as an important reminder of justice, equality, and the progress made by those who came before her. Shaliyah's biggest inspiration is Serena Williams, whose determination and resilience continue to motivate her.   <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"> Her confidence and dedication motivate me to work hard toward my own goals and never give up, even when things get difficult. </blockquote>   In volleyball, Shaliyah is focused on continuing to develop her skills, compete at the collegiate level, and be the best teammate she can be. Beyond athletics, she aspires to become a neurosurgeon, combining her passion for learning with her desire to help others and make a positive impact on people's lives.     AFor Ameya, Juneteenth is a meaningful reminder of her roots, culture, and the resilience of those who came before her.   <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"> Juneteenth is a very special and important date that reminds me where I come from and the greatness that has been shown through the years of African Americans and the culture. </blockquote>   She views the holiday as an opportunity to celebrate not only the hardships endured, but also the sacrifices, dedication, and progress that followed. For Asia, Juneteenth is a time to honor the sacrifices and perseverance of those who came before her.   <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"> It means the time when we can celebrate the struggles and hardships that my ancestors went through in order to give me the freedom that I have today. </blockquote>   Asia's biggest inspiration is her father, whose work ethic and willingness to take on challenges motivate her to push toward her own goals. She admires his ability to overcome obstacles and prove that he is capable of whatever is placed in his path. Looking ahead, Asia hopes to either walk on to or earn an offer from an HBCU volleyball program while pursuing a degree in physical therapy.   <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"> I plan on attending Howard University in the fall of 2027! </blockquote>   Her long-term goal is to earn her doctorate and build a career helping others through physical therapy while continuing her volleyball journey at the collegiate level. Daylynn credits both her mother and sister as her biggest inspirations. Her mother's hard work, strength, and kindness motivate her daily, while her sister's faith encourages her to stay focused on what matters most and continue pursuing her goals.   <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"> My goals in volleyball are to become the best player that I can be, become a better leader on my team, and play at a higher competitive level. </blockquote>   Beyond volleyball, Daylynn is committed to working hard, overcoming challenges, and building a successful future for herself both on and off the court.     For Jada, Juneteenth is both a celebration and a reminder of the sacrifices that paved the way for future generations.   <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"> It's a day to celebrate enslaved peoples' freedom while remembering the work it took to get here. </blockquote>   Her biggest inspiration is her father, whose influence continues to motivate her both on and off the court. In volleyball, Jada is focused on eliminating unforced errors, improving her defensive transition, becoming a more vocal leader, and increasing her vertical. Beyond athletics, she plans to build a strong foundation in cybersecurity, develop technical skills, and eventually identify a specialized area within the field to pursue as a career.   <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"> In life I want to build a solid technical foundation with cybersecurity, learn the skills, and choose a specialized path so I know what part of cybersecurity I want to pursue. </blockquote>     For Princess, Juneteenth is a time to reflect on history and honor those who endured immense hardships.   <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"> To me, Juneteenth is a time to remember the struggles of African Americans and what they went through and honor their strength and courage. </blockquote>   Rather than pointing to one person, Princess finds inspiration in the people around her every day. She believes her family, coaches, and friends each provide valuable lessons and perspectives that help shape who she is. Princess sees volleyball and life as closely connected, with each helping her grow as a person.   <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"> My goal for volleyball is to ultimately reach the highest level while also pursuing a doctoral education. </blockquote>   She hopes the sport continues to shape her into a stronger woman while she works toward both athletic success and advanced academic achievements.     For Angela, Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, pride, and ensuring that no one is forgotten.   <blockquote class="wp-block-quote"> Juneteenth 1865 was the official freedom of ALL enslaved Black Americans. It symbolizes that none of us are left behind or forgotten. </blockquote>   She sees the holiday as a reminder to celebrate her culture and take pride in who she is. Angela's greatest inspiration is her great-grandmother, Pearl Burton, whose perseverance and determination continue to influence her today.
