Continue ReadingThis post will close out the high school season. The last two years we have named a Virginia player of the year. They were Akasha Anderson (Auburn) and Milan Rex (Santa Barbara). Both players went on to win Gatorade Player of the Year awards for Virginia. This year we will expand our player of the year awards to DMV, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Also listed below are the All DMV first, second and third teams and two all frosh teams.
Sellman DMV player of the Year
Kind of a no brainer to name Emerson Sellman Emerson Sellman 6'4" | OH Academy of Holy Cross | 2024 State #5 Nation VA as our first DMV player of the year. She led her team Holy Cross to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championship, leading the Tartans to an undefeated season and a number one ranking by Washington Post and Prep Dig. She also won the WCAC player of the year.
If that were not enough, prior to the high school season she captained the USA national team in two international events, the U19 world championships in Croatia where the United States won the gold medal, as well as the U21 world championships in Mexico where they finished in sixth place. For the most part, the team played with the same players in the U19 as they did in the U21, resulting in United States teenagers competing against much older international players.
Emerson Sellman Emerson Sellman 6'4" | OH Academy of Holy Cross | 2024 State #5 Nation VA has committed to Ohio State
Sellman Maryland player of the year
See above for Emerson Sellman Emerson Sellman 6'4" | OH Academy of Holy Cross | 2024 State #5 Nation VA winning the DMV player of the year. Other players who contributed to their teams successful season and deserve consideration are Ema Djordjevic Ema Djordjevic 6'0" | OH Richard Montgomery | 2025 State VA and Mailinh Godschall Mailinh Godschall 5'7" | DS/L Centennial (MD) | 2024 State #183 Nation VA . Ema is only a junior and led her team, the Richard Montgomery Rockets to their first ever Maryland State title. She both set and hit for her team, leading in kills and assists. As if that was not enough Ema also led her team in serving aces and was second in digs. She did it all on the court. Ema is only a junior so there is always next year. She has yet to commit.
Mailinh Godschall Mailinh Godschall 5'7" | DS/L Centennial (MD) | 2024 State #183 Nation VA normally plays libero for one of the best clubs in the country, Metro. For her high school Centennial, she trashed her different colored libero jersey and wore a normal colored jersey to hit outside for her team. When the season ended Mailinh led her team in kills, aces, and digs, allowing the Eagles to win their 15th state championship. That ties them with Williamsport for the most volleyball state championships in Maryland. Mailinh will be playing for Duke next year where she will don her normal different colored jersey, playing as the libero.
Clara Yu Clara Yu 5'10" | S Georgetown Day | 2024 State VA DC player of the year
Clara Yu Clara Yu 5'10" | S Georgetown Day | 2024 State VA set Georgetown Day high school to the DC state championships. It was the Mighty Hoppers second consecutive DC championship and for the second year in a row Yu earned the MVP award for the tournament. She not only led her team in assists by setting a 5/1 but she also led her team in aces, while also showing off her chops on the defensive side of the court by finishing second in digs. Clara has committed to play volleyball for Columbia next year.
Her teammate Jada Aksu Jada Aksu 6'0" | RS Georgetown Day | 2025 State VA also had to be considered. Jada was a favorite target for Clara on the right side, resulting in her leading the team in kills. Jada is only a junior. She has committed to Lafayette.
Murray and Hokenson Share Virginia Player of the Year
Both Mickhaila Murray Mickhaila Murray 5'11" | OH Flint Hill | 2024 State VA and Chloe Hokenson Chloe Hokenson 6'1" | S Langley | 2024 State VA had tremendous years, leading their teams to high school state championships. Mickhaila led Flint Hill to the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) state championship. Chloe led Langley to the Class 6 Virginia High School League (VHSL) state championship.
Normally, Flint Hill has so many weapons that it proves difficult for one player to stand out. This year the Huskies played with a small 11 player roster. While all of the players were talented, Mickhaila stood out for her contributions in the back row and front row. She also stood out as the emotional leader on the team. Based on stats from Maxpreps, Mickhaila led her team in kills, aces and pass receptions, while finishing second in digs as well. Mickhaila has yet to commit.
The Langley team carried a number of weapons on their roster. The most outstanding was clearly Chloe Hokenson Chloe Hokenson 6'1" | S Langley | 2024 State VA , who stood out for her ability to set as well as hit. Her 15 kills against Battlefield in the finals of the state championship were second on the team. It also earned her the accolades for Class 6 state player of the year. Chloe has committed to Emerson.
So rather than trying to decide on one of these two outstanding athletes for Virginia player of the year I decided to pick both, Mickhaila Murray Mickhaila Murray 5'11" | OH Flint Hill | 2024 State VA and Chloe Hokenson Chloe Hokenson 6'1" | S Langley | 2024 State VA .
Others that were considered were Mickhaila’s teammate middle Ryla Jones Ryla Jones 6'4" | MB Flint Hill | 2024 State #80 Nation VA , who stood out as an intimidating force in the front row. Another was Bishop O’Connell setter Erin Debiec Erin Debiec 6'1" | S Bishop O'Connell | 2024 State #92 Nation VA , who clearly stands out as the top setter in the area. It would not surprise me to see any of those four players win the Virginia Gatorade player of the year award.
First Team All DMV
To qualify for the lists below the high school had to compete in States. For Maryland private schools who do not have a state championship the high school had to compete in the championship match of their conference, whether that be the WCAC or ISL.
