The end of the club season has almost arrived. Once a week we will take a look at one age group from 14-17 in the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia) area that will play in either the USAV Nationals or AAU national championships. Not all the teams playing in the AAUs will be looked at so a review will made of only the top ten local teams in the Region. For this post we take a look at the 14U age group.

USAV Junior National Championship

Open Division - The only age group with two DMV teams competing in the open.

Metro

How they got there: - They finished fifth in the Northeast Qualifier to earn a bid. They also won the Chesapeake Regional Bid Qualifier earning a National bid, then vaulted to a second place finish in the Show Me Qualifier. Ironically, their only DMV loss this season came against Maryland Juniors in the Northeast Qualifier. Other than that Metro beat Maryland Juniors in the finals of the Capitol Hill Classic as well as in the finals of the Chesapeake Regional Bid Qualifier.

AES Ranking - Number one locally while also standing tall at 18 nationally.

Top Player to Watch - The 6'0" setter [player_tooltip player_id='746506' first='Carolyn' last='Maria'] also stands out as probably the top hitter on the team, generating her explosive offense from the right side. A setter who can also mash the ball is a dangerous combo.

Other Players to Watch - setter [player_tooltip player_id='750053' first='Alexis' last='Luscomb'], outside [player_tooltip player_id='747047' first='Ella' last='Luscomb'], middle [player_tooltip player_id='750047' first='Caroline' last='Conroy'], libero [player_tooltip player_id='755675' first='Charlotte' last='Nelsen'], middle [player_tooltip player_id='763154' first='Kendal' last='Lacey'], outside [player_tooltip player_id='750056' first='Kiera' last='Jordan'], outside [player_tooltip player_id='750050' first='Raquel' last='Telly'], right side [player_tooltip player_id='762240' first='Timea' last='Ioana Vladoianu'], middle [player_tooltip player_id='746330' first='Hannah' last='Keating'], defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='755672' first='Jaylin' last='Park']

Fun Fact - The older sister of Carolyn, Grace Maria hit outside for Bishop O'Connell. She now plays volleyball for Connecticut. Their mom played basketball for the national champion Connecticut Huskies. No telling where Carolyn will go but a huge Husker connection exists.

Maryland Juniors

[player_tooltip player_id='622282' first='Emerson' last='Wolfe']

How they got there - They were the first Chesapeake Region team to earn a bid, finishing third in the Sunshine Classic Qualifier USA Division in February. After that, they lost to Metro in the finals of the Chesapeake Regional Bid Championship and finished fourth in the Show Me Qualifier, one place short of earning an Open bid. Because only 14 teams played in the Show Me only one team earned a bid. Based on their overall resume Maryland Juniors eventually received an At Large bid to play in Open.

AES Ranking - number 2 locally while ranked 15th nationally, higher than Metro.

Top Player to Watch - [player_tooltip player_id='622282' first='Emerson' last='Wolfe'] dominated as a frosh in high school last year. She plays a year down and clearly stands out as their top hitter. [player_tooltip player_id='748487' first='Sierra' last='Thomas'] also ranks as a top left side. When these two are rolling on all cylinders it becomes a tough task to hold them down.

Other Players to Watch - middle [player_tooltip player_id='753073' first='Aniston' last='Williams'], outside [player_tooltip player_id='753070' first='Avery' last='Lettinga'], middle [player_tooltip player_id='748496' first='Azana' last='Saheed'], libero [player_tooltip player_id='748518' first='Harper' last='Walker'], setter [player_tooltip player_id='748500' first='Katherine' last='Liu'], middle [player_tooltip player_id='748492' first='Paetyn' last='Brown'], right side [player_tooltip player_id='748513' first='Scarlett' last='Netherton'], defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='754613' first='Charlotte' last='Aus'], setter/right side [player_tooltip player_id='749358' first='Eva' last='Bujanauskas']

Fun Fact - Last year this same group of girls played in Dallas in the 11-13 age group. They finished third in the National Division. For Maryland Juniors the hope is they will make a return to excellence as they return to Dallas.

When you bring athleticism to many sports you carry a lot on your plate. Elliot lists 6'0" and plays multiple sports, including basketball, lacrosse and volleyball. Her volleyball skills are obvious when you watch her play. She is crisp and fluid in her movements on the court. As stated earlier, most players at the 14 age group with her height would play middle to begin their young volleyball career. Elliot shows the athleticism and quickness to hit left side, the premier position in volleyball. Her future shines bright.

[program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] (Cozad)

How they got there - Paramount earned an American bid finishing third in the Chesapeake Bid Regional Championships. When Metro won an open bid [program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] took the National Bid.

AES Ranking - third locally while falling just outside the top 100 at 115 nationally.

Top Player to Watch - Right now my vote goes to [player_tooltip player_id='747560' first='Elliot' last='Dorgan'], who at 6'0" can pound the ball when positioned outside. However, this team carries lots of talent with a balanced roster.

Other players to Watch - middle/right side [player_tooltip player_id='755132' first='Abigail' last='Battcock'], middle/right side [player_tooltip player_id='755129' first='Lillian' last='Battcock'], libero [player_tooltip player_id='747458' first='Angelie' last='Rose Carrasco'], setter [player_tooltip player_id='747031' first='Braylin' last='Coacher'], setter [player_tooltip player_id='752431' first='Kayla' last='Chang'], right side [player_tooltip player_id='763150' first='Samantha' last='Napiwocki'], middle [player_tooltip player_id='763151' first='Sydney' last='Lewis'], middle [player_tooltip player_id='746620' first='Sahana' last='Cushman'], right side [player_tooltip player_id='747302' first='Kayleigh' last='Francis']

Fun Fact - Good way to double up your power add a couple twin towers. The 6'1" middle/right sides Abigail and Lillian are twins.

[program_tooltip program_id='450416' first='East' last='Coast Volleyball Club'] Black

How they got there - East Coast finished first in the Old Dominion Regional Bid Championship. In the City Oaks Challenge they finished in second place, losing to Metro but beating Virginia Juniors. They also lost to Metro in the Mid-Atlantic Power League (MAPL) at Hampton.

AES Ranking - They are number one in the Old Dominion Region while falling to 182 nationally.

Top Player to Watch - East Coast does not set their middles a lot but [player_tooltip player_id='752416' first='Mallory' last='Beeson'] shows tremendous potential playing the position.

Other Players to Watch - right side [player_tooltip player_id='752412' first='Alexa' last='Whitfield'], left side [player_tooltip player_id='746523' first='Isabella' last='Smith'], setter [player_tooltip player_id='752421' first='Khloe' last='Phillips']

USA Division

Virginia Juniors

How they got there -They finished fourth in the Chesapeake Regional Bid Championship to earn an American bid. They bumped up to take Maryland Juniors USA bid spot from the Sunshine Qualifier. Virginia Juniors also played in the Sunshine Qualifier and took 25th out of 128 teams playing in the American Division. Virginia Juniors had signed up for AAU but dropped out once an opportunity came up to play in the USAV national championship.

AES Ranking - They rank 7th regionally and 169th nationally.

Top Player to Watch - [player_tooltip player_id='754650' first='Madison' last='Meiring'] provides the offense from the left side while also pounding the ball from the back row. On the court she clearly acts as the emotional leader.

Other players to Watch - left side [player_tooltip player_id='748006' first='Alaenah' last='Frank'], right side [player_tooltip player_id='754655' first='Bella' last='Pereyra'], pin [player_tooltip player_id='768482' first='Ella' last='Peay'],

Bay Area Volleyball Academy came into the Chesapeake Regional Bid Championships a bit of an unknown. They came away earning a bid to the American Division in Junior Nationals. While the team carries talent, the leader of that talent is setter [player_tooltip player_id='762823' first='Brie' last='Mouton']. She set a 5/1 leading the offense to upset wins over Paramount Anderson and Virginia Elite to earn a bid.

Brie brings good athleticism to the position, showing the ability to also hit right side. At the 14 age group the quick sets were absent but that will develop as she gets older. Definitely a setter to watch.

Bay Area Volleyball Academy Waves

How They Got There - They finished fifth in the Chesapeake Regional Bid Championship, earning a bid to Dallas. Bay Area does not normally qualify for USAV national championship appearances, but they had a good year. They had one bad finish playing in the Mideast Qualifier USA Division, finishing 53rd out of 60 teams. They lowered their expectations playing in the Northeast Qualifier Liberty Division and finished ninth out of 43 teams.

AES Rankings - They list fifth in the Region while filling in at 241 nationally.

Top Player to Watch - Their setter [player_tooltip player_id='762823' first='Brie' last='Mouton'] runs a 5/1. She is extremely athletic and could probably be effective as an outside as well.

Other players to Watch - left side [player_tooltip player_id='763138' first='Avielle' last='Lewis'], Libero [player_tooltip player_id='763146' first='Jemma' last='Peterson']

Liberty Elite

How they got there - They finished 6th in the Chesapeake Bid Regional Championships and fell short of a bid. With all the teams moving up they were given the American bid, reallocated from the New England Region. Another team who signed up to play at AAUs but dropped out once earning a bid to USAV Junior Nationals opened up.

AES Ranking - Liberty Elite finished ninth in the region while falling to 302 nationally. They had a good 9th place finish out of 91 teams in the Northeast Qualifier American Division.

Players to Watch - No players to note from Liberty Elite.

Freedom Division

MVSA Force

How They Got There - They finished seventh in the Chesapeake Regional Bid Championship, but with the two bump ups to open they were able to slot in a Freedom Division bid.

AES Ranking - MVSA ranks 12th regionally while falling to 324th nationally.

Top Player to Watch - [player_tooltip player_id='762829' first='Angela' last='Zhang'] just started playing the game at the club level and already stands out as the team's top offensive performer from the left side.

Other Players to Watch - left side [player_tooltip player_id='772027' first='Ema' last='Sedlo Stucka'], middle [player_tooltip player_id='763153' first='Jola' last='Abayomi'], Libero [player_tooltip player_id='763157' first='Olivia' last='Li']

[program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] (Anderson)

How They Got There - Another seventh place finish in the Chesapeake Regional Bid Championship that resulted in a Freedom Bid after Metro and Maryland Juniors earned Open bids.

AES Ranking - The second team still ranks 11th regionally but a 500 ranking nationally indicates a struggle against the higher competition. In the Northeast Qualifier they finished ninth out of 43 teams playing in the Liberty Division.

Top Player to Watch - [player_tooltip player_id='772028' first='Sofia' last='Gelston'] shows a lot of hustle playing left side. She plays six rotations well excelling at both offense and defense. At 5'7" the class of 2028 relies mainly on her guile to create offense.

Other Players to Watch - left side [player_tooltip player_id='755848' first='Mihika' last='Mamidi'], middle [player_tooltip player_id='772030' first='Timi' last='Onamuti']

Williamsburg Volleyball Club American

How They Got There - They finished in fourth place in the Old Dominion Regional Bid Championship to earn a bid in the Freedom Division. Only two Old Dominion 14U teams accepted bids to Dallas. Many of the Old Dominion teams prefer to play AAUs in Orlando.

AES Ranking - They rank 19th regionally with a 2,801 national ranking. They will face a challenge playing the better teams in Dallas in the Freedom Division.

Players to Watch - No players noted for Williamsburg Volleyball Club.

I can remember years ago when [player_tooltip player_id='181302' first='Kennedy' last='Spaid'] impressed with her play just prior to her first year in high school. She has now gone on to win three high school state championships for James Wood.

[program_tooltip program_id='494409' first='Blue' last='Ridge'] - Perhaps the only top 100 nationally ranked team from the Chesapeake Region playing in AAUs in the 14U age group. They also finished a respectful 9th out of 88 teams in the Northeast Qualifier USA Division.

AES Ranking - 4th in the Region while still placing a respectable 70 rank nationally.

Top Player - At 5'10" [player_tooltip player_id='749353' first='Brielle' last='Wolf'] can play middle or left side. Her power ends rallies quickly when playing left side. Brielle will play for the powerhouse Musselman in West Virginia.

Other players to Watch - middle [player_tooltip player_id='749349' first='Avery' last='Curtis'], left side [player_tooltip player_id='749357' first='Ellie' last='Palmer'], libero [player_tooltip player_id='749362' first='Jersi' last='Blundell']

Elite Division

540 Volleyball Elite - They finished 14th out of 43 teams playing in the Liberty Division of the Northeast Qualifier.

AES Ranking - Regionally they are ranked fourth. Their national ranking sits at 540, a perfectly suited number when you consider their name.

Players to Watch - No players noted for 540 Volleyball Elite..

Aspire

MOCO Magic - They have done well in AAU tournaments, finishing in the top three in six tournaments. They also finished 33rd out of 88 teams in the USA Division Northeast Qualifier. At the National Harbor tournament they lost to Virginia Juniors in the finals in three. You can still see them play at the East Coast Championship at the end of the month.

AES Ranking - They are ranked 6th in the Region and 340 nationally.

Top Player - Love the enthusiasm of defensive specialist [player_tooltip player_id='754674' first='Clark' last='Rodney']. She is always moving in the back row, picking off digs like peaches from a tree. She also has the ability to hit left side and create some offense hitting from the back row.

Other Players to Watch - Libero [player_tooltip player_id='754676' first='Gia' last='Capaldi'], right side [player_tooltip player_id='754667' first='Katja' last='Nagy']
