The first couple weeks of volleyball have been played. I can't say I have seen all the teams ranked on this list play, but there exists a familiarity of the players on the teams ranked. Also, since I coach at Bishop O'Connell there could exist some bias on my part. This is my 13th year at O'Connell and I can remember the days when Flint Hill carried some powerful teams that just thrashed us. They thrashed just about everyone they played. This O'Connell team reminds me a lot of those Flint Hill teams of the past.

Team records are based on reported matches as of September 11. For many of the Maryland public schools their season has just started this week.

1 Bishop O'Connell (8-0) - Their season started with a sweep against their conference rival Holy Cross in an official WCAC match. They also swept past Ocean Lakes in a tournament this past weekend. They have scrimmaged Georgetown Day and Madison. All those teams fill the top ten. The Knights are battle tested. They are led by the top prospect in the class of 2029 setter [player_tooltip player_id='746506' first='Carolyn' last='Maria'] and the top prospect in the class of 2030 in [player_tooltip player_id='753097' first='Nadia' last='Wooten']. Carolyn leads the team in assists while sitting second in aces and digs. Nadia leads the team in kills. Carolyn currently brings a hitting percentage of .467 while Nadia follows closely behind at .450. They are an unstoppable duo. Other 2029s contributing include [player_tooltip player_id='750056' first='Kiera' last='Jordan'], [player_tooltip player_id='892024' first='Claire' last='Kennedy'], [player_tooltip player_id='755129' first='Lillian' last='Battcock'] and [player_tooltip player_id='755132' first='Abigail' last='Battcock']. They are young and they are talented.

2 Annapolis Area Christian (5-0) - Last year this group of frosh finished 23-2, losing only to Georgetown Day and Kellam at the Endless Summer tournament. They finished number 9 in our final top 25 ranking of last year. This year this group of frosh has elevated to sophomores. That means a step up for the super frosh from last year, [player_tooltip player_id='748513' first='Scarlett' last='Netherton'], [player_tooltip player_id='748492' first='Paetyn' last='Brown'], [player_tooltip player_id='762823' first='Brie' last='Mouton'], [player_tooltip player_id='753070' first='Avery' last='Lettinga'], [player_tooltip player_id='749642' first='Sophia' last='Groshek'], [player_tooltip player_id='896390' first='Harper' last='Walker'] and finally [player_tooltip player_id='781700' first='Gianna' last='Bonnett']. They opened the season with three wins against WCAC opponents Bishop McNamara, St. Johns and Paul VI. They also swept past Reservoir, which made it to the Class 3 state semifinals last year before losing to North Hagerstown. Another young and talented team that plans to travel to Las Vegas next week to play in the Durango tournament.

It is still early in the season but [player_tooltip player_id='748513' first='Scarlett' last='Netherton'] leads a talented Annapolis team in kills, averaging 5.8 kills per set. That is almost four kills greater than her second most productive teammate [player_tooltip player_id='753070' first='Avery' last='Lettinga'].

Scarlett plays for Metro 15, which is the same team that fills the Bishop O'Conell roster with four players in their starting lineup rotation. She now lists at 5'11" with an approach jump just inches shy of 10 feet. Her fast twitch movements allow her to whip her arm through the zone quickly, putting tremendous power on the ball. Then there is her volleyball IQ to inherently know what areas of the court to direct the ball. She loves to power the ball down the line when it is given to her.

A six rotation player who spent some time early in her career setting while also hitting right side.

3 West Springfield (8-0) - Despite graduating their two left sides the Spartans continue to roll with a veteran lineup. They have swept seven of their eight opponents, including Langley and George Marshall. [player_tooltip player_id='720348' first='Milena' last='Kibret'] leads the team in kills. She appears to move all along the net, listed as a middle, left and right side. [player_tooltip player_id='438046' first='Anna' last='Dierks'], the highest ranked player at number 14 in the class of 2027 yet to commit sets a 5/1. She set the team to a state championship last year.

4 Holy Cross (1-1) - They lost to Bishop O'Connell in their WCAC opener playing without one of their better players [player_tooltip player_id='536721' first='Ana' last='Woods']. They have another big match this week against Annapolis Area Christian. Middle [player_tooltip player_id='1004682' first='Aniston' last='Williams'], another member of the Metro 15 travel team, puts up a solid block in the middle. After her the rest of the roster is filled with juniors. [player_tooltip player_id='622282' first='Emerson' last='Wolfe'] also plays for the Metro 15 Travel team but she is a junior who has also committed to Houston.

5 Paul VI (3-1) - Their only loss came against number 2 Annapolis Area Christian. They bounced back to beat a tough Georgetown Day team. The one big class of 2029 contributing is [player_tooltip player_id='777558' first='Kayla' last='R Tutoni'], who is currently playing as a defensive specialist. She played for Metro 14 last year. Currently, their top offensive player is left side [player_tooltip player_id='941986' first='Coco' last='Lewis'], but transfer middle [player_tooltip player_id='625593' first='Cairo' last='Turner'] is second in kills. Frosh [player_tooltip player_id='1041346' first='Riley' last='Fortier'] and [player_tooltip player_id='995575' first='Charlotte' last='Hays'] could also contribute more as the season progresses.

6 Oakton (5-0) - They have gotten off to a quick start sweeping their first five matches. Class of 2029 [player_tooltip player_id='754650' first='Madison' last='Meiring'] leads the team in kills. Her hitting percentage has improved from .088 as a frosh to .328 this year. Last year she led the team in kills, but this year she is finding the court more while still leading the team in kills. Another class of 2028 [player_tooltip player_id='756342' first='Olivia' last='Baick'] is leading the team in the back row. Both play for Virginia Juniors. Next week they will face Chantilly in a crucial conference match.

Last year Madison led Oakton in kills as a frosh. However, she generated almost as many errors with her hits as kills with a hitting percentage at .088. This year as a sophomore her growth has shown with her hitting percentage now at .328. In five matches she already has 1/3 the number of kills she generated last season.

Her serve percentage has also improved without sacrificing on the number of aces she accumulates each set. Her next step for improvement would be to enhance her back row play, gaining more consistency with her passing as well as improving her defensive reads. Still only a sophomore there is still time to continue to enhance her game.

7 Ocean Lakes (8-2) - Ocean Lakes lost to Bishop O'Connell at the Virginia Volleyball Showcase finishing in second place in the tournament. Shortly after the tournament Landstown upset them in five, otherwise the plan was to rank them higher. They still have not provided any rosters, but class of 2030 [player_tooltip player_id='1000565' first='Arina' last='Huseva'] provides solid production in the middle. Veteran leadership is provided by [player_tooltip player_id='618590' first='Lyla' last='Shannon'] and [player_tooltip player_id='891350' first='Kennedy' last='Walls']. While a number of frosh may ultimately appear on the roster, few will start like Arina. Virginia Beach teams do not have Junior Varsity or Frosh teams so they carry large Varsity rosters.

8 Richard Montgomery (2-0) - The Rockets have started out strong with two 3-1 victories over Churchill and Urbana. Both teams are expected to challenge the Rockets in the Maryland class 4 state championships. Their big hitter is the number one prospect in the class of 2028 [player_tooltip player_id='536719' first='Katherine' last='Mitchell']. Last year she accounted for over 50 percent of their kills. This year they seem to be spreading the offense around a little more. Class of 2030 [player_tooltip player_id='1041321' first='Charlotte' last='Kim'] has filled in as the second setter in a 6/2 for the Rockets. They also have a couple middle/right sides contributing [player_tooltip player_id='763153' first='Jola' last='Abayomi'] and [player_tooltip player_id='880139' first='Milena' last='Gjoni'].

9. Madison (8-2) - They are led by their two undersized left sides [player_tooltip player_id='265167' first='Laila' last='Chadwick'] and [player_tooltip player_id='359401' first='Chloe' last='Barth']. Laila last year won the Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year award but plays libero for Metro and will remain a libero when she plays for Oklahoma. Their two losses were delivered by George Marshall in the opener and First Colonial in the Virginia Volleyball Showcase. This is a veteran team with no frosh or sophomores on their roster.

10. Briar Woods (6-0) - Last year they were one of the surprise teams during the high school season, led by a number of frosh. This year those frosh are a year older and wiser. Class of 2029 setter [player_tooltip player_id='752431' first='Kayla' last='Chang'] runs the offense setting pins [player_tooltip player_id='755848' first='Mihika' last='Mamidi'], [player_tooltip player_id='772889' first='Marisa' last='Barreto'] and [player_tooltip player_id='881356' first='Summer' last='Syed']. Class of 2029 [player_tooltip player_id='881839' first='Clara' last='Lan'] can also set while [player_tooltip player_id='881831' first='Allison' last='Tan'] covers the back row. Last year Briar Woods lost to Riverside in the Class 5 Regionals. This year their goal is to reach the Class 5 state bracket.

Kayla is a quality setter who normally runs a 5/1 for Briar Woods but sets a 6/2 for [program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last='']. It is interesting to note that Kayla won a top performer award during the same Prep Dig showcase as [player_tooltip player_id='747031' first='Braylin' last='Coacher'] and [player_tooltip player_id='562335' first='Zeynep' last='Anaz']. All three set for high schools that appear in the top ten of this top twenty list, Coacher for Woodgrove and Anaz for Madison.

Kayla lists only 5'7" but she teams with [player_tooltip player_id='747031' first='Braylin' last='Coacher'] to set a 6/2 for [program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] 15. They set [program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] to an Open bid in Junior Nationals. Now the two hope to lead their teams to a high school state championship, each setting a 5/1.

Kayla jump sets often, brings smooth hands to the setting position while also showing a high volleyball IQ about running an offense. For Briar Woods she certainly carries the weapons to run her offense.

11. Howard (1-0) - Howard started their season with a big 5 set win over River Hill, taking the fifth set 15-10. [player_tooltip player_id='829552' first='Anna' last='Fiedler'] led the team in kills with 19, along with 18 digs while senior [player_tooltip player_id='832940' first='Jackie' last='Klugh'] added 15. Last year Klugh contributed just 17 kills over the entire season. [player_tooltip player_id='698761' first='Imagine' last='Peltier'] contributed 43 assists along with 18 digs. For the opener [player_tooltip player_id='1041329' first='Gianna' last='Cabrales'] was the lone class of 2030 with significant contributions coming in as a defensive specialist for serve receive.

12. George Marshall (7-1) - Last year George Marshall started the season 1-9 but still appeared in the state bracket for the first time in school history. Grassfield swept them in the first round of the playoffs. This year they have started the season off 7-1 with their only loss to last years state champion West Springfield. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='438068' first='Ayla' last='Sayd'] is the big bomber on the team. They only have one class of 2029 on the roster. [player_tooltip player_id='1019965' first='Molly' last='Taylor'] assists libero [player_tooltip player_id='965034' first='Lily' last='Davison'] in the back row.

13. Handley (5-0) - The Judges have beaten the top two teams in their conference, sweeping four time defending champion James Wood, then taking down Millbrook in five. That puts them atop the Northwestern Division. It appears [player_tooltip player_id='511457' first='Breeze' last='Johnson'] is contributing significant playing time to their success. [player_tooltip player_id='807235' first='Sadie' last='Bailey'] would be another significant contributor from the outside. Not aware of any contributions from the 2029 and 2030 class. No rosters available at this time.

14, Georgetown Day (1-1) - The Mighty Hoppers lost their middles and their 5/1 DC Gatorade Player of the Year setter [player_tooltip player_id='292644' first='Caycee' last='Chhum']. Failing to find replacements in those positions could result in a long season. They did battle Paul VI taking the opener but then losing the next three sets. Class of 2030 [player_tooltip player_id='750050' first='Raquel' last='Telly'] now finds herself leading the offense early in the season. Last year most of her play was restricted to the back row as a serving specialist. This year she finds herself the leader in kills. Her older sister senior [player_tooltip player_id='377396' first='Alexa' last='Telly'] also swings from the pins.

15. South County (5-1) - They started their season 5-0 before being upset by Robinson in their last match. Still, the five wins is two short of the number they won all of last year. Two class of 2030 frosh are contributing to that success, pin hitter [player_tooltip player_id='941779' first='Jordin' last='Guthrie'] and setter [player_tooltip player_id='768588' first='Eliana' last='Butler']. Jordin leads the team in kills while Eliana assists [player_tooltip player_id='586523' first='Victoria' last='Hobson'] setting a 6/2. Class of 2029 [player_tooltip player_id='917866' first='Sloan' last='Tann'] ranks second on the team in kills. They also have class of 2029 middle [player_tooltip player_id='990284' first='Naima' last='Davies'] leading the team in blocks.

Jordin served most of her tie playing right side for Metro because [player_tooltip player_id='753097' first='Nadia' last='Wooten'] and [player_tooltip player_id='941763' first='Sai' last='Herndon-Brown'] dominated most of the playing time on the left side. Jordin brings an approach jump of at least 9'7" to the pins. Playing for South County she can dominate at left side, but she also wants to keep her feel for the right side when returning to Metro.

For South County she leads the team in kills, while another Metro player [player_tooltip player_id='917866' first='Sloan' last='Tann'] ranks second. Jordin ranks in the top ten in our class of 2030.

16. Flint Hill (3-1) - Any team with [player_tooltip player_id='437441' first='Hunter' last='Ross'] on their roster has the potential to win any match with any team when she is on her game. Unfortunately, she cannot be on her game every set so that is when players like class of 2029 [player_tooltip player_id='893943' first='Mila' last='Smith'] or [player_tooltip player_id='948577' first='Bailey' last='Hunstad'] need to contribute. Class of 2030 [player_tooltip player_id='877857' first='Asli' last='Anaz'] hits right side. Mila is second behind Hunter in kills while Asil is third. Bialey is second in blocks behind junior [player_tooltip player_id='728971' first='Mandela' last='Masimini']. Class of 2030 [player_tooltip player_id='789638' first='Zenaia' last='Gray'] is second to libero [player_tooltip player_id='784849' first='Delaney' last='Malloy'] in digs. They lost their opener to Madison in five, then won their next three matches. They have a big match next week against Georgetown Day which could define the conference.

17. Grafton (6-0) - Grafton always seems to thrive in the hunt. In their first six matches they have only lost one set. While [player_tooltip player_id='465315' first='Ana' last='Breckons'] leads the team in kills her younger sister [player_tooltip player_id='883712' first='Alivia' last='Breckons'] sits number two. Ana generally blocks middle while Alivia swings outside. They also have class of 2030 middle [player_tooltip player_id='1041334' first='Aniya' last='Arthur'] third in kills.

Those younger sisters have a habit of eventually outperforming their older sisters. Perhaps Ana and Alivia can lead Grafton to a state championship as Alivia plays he second year with the Clippers.

Alivia is already outperforming last years numbers. As a frosh she finished with a hitting percentage at .198. As a sophomore that has improved to .296. She has also grown an inch to reach 6'0" in height.

This could be the year that Grafton wins a state championship. They have come close many times but always fallen short.

18. Glenelg (6-1) - They have jumped to a 6-1 start with their only loss against Urbana. It is interesting that setter [player_tooltip player_id='529251' first='Jessica' last='Li'] takes the early lead in kills, which tells me she must be staying right side to hit. Class of 2029 [player_tooltip player_id='987024' first='Miyah' last='Dutton'] falls just behind Jessica in kills, ranking second while hitting outside. Myah lists only 5'5" but ranks 174 in the class of 2029 because of her ability to put the ball away. Last year she did not make a contribution for the team winning a state championship. This year she is at the forefront.

19. Woodbridge (6-2) - Last week was a big week for Class of 2029 [player_tooltip player_id='747560' first='Elliot' last='Dorgan']. She made all tournament team at the Virginia Volleyball Showcase and also won MaxPreps Virginia player of the week award. The team did lose two matches at the showcase to number 9 Madison and number 7 Ocean Lakes. Class of 2029 setter [player_tooltip player_id='747031' first='Braylin' last='Coacher'] also contributes running a 5/1 offense.

20. Grassfield (3-0) - Last year Grassfield reached the semi-finals of the Class 6 Virginia State playoffs then got swept by eventual champion West Springfield. They return [player_tooltip player_id='734796' first='Benisa' last='Moore'], who leads the team in kills as a senior. She lists only 5'7" but hits the ball hard. She has committed to Bridgewater with [player_tooltip player_id='547072' first='Victoria' last='Small'] out of Maryvale also committed there. They do have a frosh in middle [player_tooltip player_id='1038832' first='Scarlett' last='Lange'] who needs to be watched. Another frosh [player_tooltip player_id='1008294' first='Brooklyn' last='Cassidy'] plays as a defensive specialist. Ahead of her is one of the better liberos in the area [player_tooltip player_id='471714' first='Ryann' last='Bothof']. No better player to learn from.

Other Schools for consideration - Fort Defiance, Christiansburg, Bullis, Freedom, Potomac School
