Time to come out with our top twenty from the Virginia, Maryland and DC area. There will certainly be an ebb and flow to this list as the season progresses.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>1 <strong>Riverside</strong> (1-0) - They were a pretty good team before the transfer of right side <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='301696' first='Nadiya' last='Johnson']</strong>. While they lost an outside and a libero the addition of Nadiya and the maturation of libero <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='438070' first='Camryn' last='Coulther']</strong> will make up for those losses. Outsides <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='225187' first='Simone' last='Schaefer']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='464556' first='Kennedy' last='Peyton']</strong> return as do setters <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='333651' first='Sydney' last='Ray']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='377335' first='Mackenzie' last='Davis']</strong>. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='333652' first='Gabriella' last='Vizek']</strong> can play either right side or middle and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='181309' first='Brianna' last='Holladay']</strong> ranks as one of the top middles in the area. They opened the season with a sweep against Battlefield. Looks like another appearance in the Class 5 Virginia state championship. The goal this year is to finish it.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>2 <strong>Richard Montgomery </strong>(0-0) - The Rockets have virtually the same cast of characters returning from their championship run from last season. <strong> [player_tooltip player_id='235748' first='Ema' last='Djordjevic']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='478765' first='Amy' last='Ye']</strong> both set and hit right side. Younger sister of Ema, <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='491007' first='Ana' last='Djordjevic']</strong> will take over the libero responsibilities. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='309030' first='Corinne' last='Howard']</strong> will fill one middle and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='412056' first='Elizabeth' last='Mitchell'] </strong>will tutor her younger sister, frosh <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='536719' first='Katherine' last='Mitchell']</strong> on the left side with last year's frosh sensation <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='465326' first='Saesha' last='Dhote']</strong> also contributing. The only concern is her 5'7" height may have to force her to be rotated out late in the game when she finds herself in the front row if the team wants to improve their blocking.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- /wp:acf/evaluation-block --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>3 <strong>Georgetown Day</strong> (1-0) - Another team with some impressive players to fill the floor. Start with right side <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='181763' first='Jada' last='Aksu'] </strong>and ends with newcomer setter <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='292644' first='Caycee' last='Chhum']</strong>, who can set a 5/1 or share setting duties with <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='434853' first='Elizabeth' last='Higday']</strong>. Outsides are impressive with the double z's <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='248705' first='Zoe' last='Ryu']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='437985' first='Zora' last='Dimbo']</strong>, who is coming off a successful frosh year. Middles will be a combination of <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='472234' first='Tessa' last='Fergusson']</strong>, <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='355124' first='Fiona' last='McDermott']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='321676' first='Gabrielle' last='Wigglesworth']</strong>. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='326533' first='Shiraz' last='Benyoucef'] </strong>will take over the libero role. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>4 <strong>James Madison</strong> (1-1) - While they lost their opener to Yorktown, consider that a misstep. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='265167' first='Laila' last='Chadwick']</strong> will switch roles from libero with Metro to left side for Madison. She will be joined by <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='377336' first='Callie' last='Agniel']</strong>. Middles will see a trio of <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='230817' first='Riley' last='Lynch']</strong>, <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='181314' first='Aubrey' last='Loughlin']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='397550' first='Chloe' last='Bonney-James']</strong>, one of the three possibly moving to right side. Callie and Chloe missed all of last season because of injury. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='359401' first='Chloe' last='Barth'] </strong>can play the other right side and provide offense from the back row. On the roster they do list <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='265167' first='Laila' last='Chadwick']</strong> as a libero but that role could eventually stick with <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='520362' first='Abby' last='Nguyen']</strong>. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='455177' first='Briana' last='Vo']</strong> will be one of the setters, with <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='537586' first='Judy' last='Backman']</strong> and <strong>Lauren Garrett</strong> fighting for the second setting spot.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>5 <strong>North Hagerstown</strong> (0-0) -The Hubs may have the two best left sides in the DMV in sisters <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='303701' first='Caydence' last='Doolan']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='249341' first='Baylee' last='Doolan']</strong>. Making sure they get the sets will be senior <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='520349' first='Lauren' last='Hobbs']</strong>, the third best setter in the class of 2025 and the top setter in that class yet to commit. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='481964' first='Nevaeh' last='Ware']</strong> should not be overlooked in the middle. They are the defending 2023 Class 3 Marland state champions, and they bring back most of their roster. Clearly a veteran team with a roster filled with juniors and seniors.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>6 <strong>James Wood </strong>(1-0) -The two time defending Class 4 Virginia state champions will have a number of talented teams looking to knock them off their perch. Last year they played without a libero, but this year they will have transfer <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='218149' first='Giselle' last='Norris']</strong> patrolling the back row. The player of the year last year and recent Arizona State beach commit <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='181302' first='Kennedy' last='Spaid']</strong> returns to the left side and will be joined by libero, now left side <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='181280' first='Brenna' last='Corbin']</strong>. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='320815' first='Tenley' last='Mattison']</strong> returns as the middle and newcomer<strong> Kylee Plumb</strong> takes over the setting responsibilities. Frosh <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='720415' first='Bella' last='Middleton']</strong> can also set. The Colonels won their opener against one of their Class 4 rivals Dominion in four. While ranked as the fifth best setter in the class of 2026 this could rise with an ISL championship. Megan is a technically smooth setter who uses the jump set to her advantage. Claire reminds me of that special ingredient a master chef puts in their lasagna to make it taste better. Talented frosh <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='554770' first='Rujuta' last='Singh']</strong> made the all tournament team and won the Prep Dig top performer this year. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='377330' first='Chloe' last='Lin']</strong> and <strong>Vivian Nitowski</strong> look to fill the other pins until Ana's return. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='238357' first='Claire' last='Mo']</strong> also made the all tournament team setting a 5/1. Prep Dig rates her as the top setter in the DMV in the class of 2026. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='476364' first='Amber' last='Smith']</strong> plays a quality libero and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='470555' first='Ava' last='Barnett']</strong> will surprise you playing middle. <strong> [player_tooltip player_id='239322' first='Hailey' last='Park'] </strong>can be used at setter or to play back row.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>9 <strong>Bishop O'Connell </strong>(1-0) - The Knights lost some big pieces, but they bring in some talented newcomers. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='235322' first='Avery' last='Prendergast']</strong> transferred from St. Johns and will take over the setting responsibilities, with frosh <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='612396' first='Natalie' last='Hobson'] </strong>backing her up. The 6'0" <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='488812' first='Olivia' last='Boggs']</strong> transferred from Yorktown and teams with <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='238341' first='Teodora' last='Stamenkovic'] </strong>in the middle. The third newcomer is left side <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='385968' first='Macie' last='Murray']</strong> who will share the left side limelight with <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='475116' first='Jocelyn' last='Pye']</strong>. The back row will see returnees <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='235295' first='Hannah' last='Kotb']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='212888' first='Maia' last='Cerezo']</strong> hold down the position. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='377397' first='Ellyson' last='Miller']</strong> will play right side and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='529254' first='Gracie' last='Davig']</strong> provides depth at both right side and middle. It appears the Knights have reloaded but it may take some time for the newcomers to mesh.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>10<strong> Holy Cross</strong> (3-3) - Another team that hopes to reload is Holy Cross. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='181304' first='Sarah' last='Jeremias']</strong> will be one of the veteran left sides to return and she will be joined at the pins by frosh <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='536721' first='Ana' last='Woods']</strong> and sophomore <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='438091' first='Catherine' last='McIntyre']</strong>. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='238376' first='Anasofia' last='Zanellato']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='672039' first='Sibel' last='Ozan']</strong> will share setting duties. The middles will return with <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='235324' first='Rowan' last='Johnson']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='477146' first='Aaliyah' last='Williams']</strong> while <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='472384' first='Kate' last='Bickel'] </strong>returns as the primary libero. Last year the Tartans finished undefeated, ranking as the top team in the DMV area by the Washington Post and Prep Dig. This year they have already begun the season with three losses. However, conference championships are never won at the start of the year. They should be contending by season's end.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>11 <strong>Millbrook</strong> (2-0) -The last couple years Millbrook has fallen short against James Wood. They still have talent to change that dynamic. Last year she put together 968 assists in leading Hidden Valley to the Class 3 Virginia state championship. She has been setting a 5/1 for Hidden Valley for the last three years so she knows how to run an offense.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- /wp:acf/evaluation-block --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>12 <strong>Hidden Valley</strong> (1-0) - The trio of <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='196556' first='Caleigh' last='Ponn']</strong>,<strong> [player_tooltip player_id='235285' first='Calli' last='Anderson']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='464576' first='Sophie' last='Arnold']</strong> have been playing together for three years. Last year they won a Class 3 Virginia state championship. They hope to end their high school careers with a repeat. Caleigh is another libero who transforms into a hitter in high school, but she finished number two in the state of Virginia in kills. Calli sets for her and Sophie fills the other left side. Now they have to fill in the other positions.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>13 <strong>Wooten</strong> (0-0) - Wooten played to a tie against Flint Hill last week. A number of Maryland schools don't have completed rosters yet so they are difficult to assess. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='325600' first='Taryn' last='Su']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='377331' first='Sofia' last='Sossa']</strong> appear to be the two setters. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='438097' first='Haile' last='Ma']</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='325604' first='Sara' last='Foster']</strong> return as the primary offensive weapons from the left side. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='434851' first='Caitlin' last='Doherty']</strong> will fill one of the middles. That is enough club talent to compete for a State championship.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>14 <strong>Kellam</strong> (1-0) - The Virginia Beach team carries some impressive pins in <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='484970' first='Sofia' last='Barnes'],</strong> <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='608979' first='Mia' last='Schmidt']</strong> and <strong>Audriana Neil </strong>from the left side. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='484751' first='Riley' last='Erwin']</strong> will hit from the right side but also set. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='643814' first='Emma' last='Irving'] </strong>will be the other setter. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='434856' first='Sydney' last='Stone']</strong> will handle the libero position. They have already won a big match when they took down last year's Class 5 Virginia State champion First Colonial in five. They took the fifth set 16-14 with <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='484970' first='Sofia' last='Barnes']</strong> ending the match with 27 kills.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>15 <strong>Loudoun County</strong> (1-0) - The Captains may have more outsides than they have positions with captain <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='523337' first='Ana' last='Smithson'],</strong> <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='249330' first='Charlotte' last='Arrington']</strong>, <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='377334' first='Josephine' last='Seekford'] </strong>and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='279856' first='Kayla' last='Luther']</strong> all vying for a spot. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='377327' first='Isabella' last='DeWan']</strong> will cover the back row as the libero. The middles could be <strong>Lauren Norton </strong>and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='485504' first='Sydney' last='Miller']</strong>. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='591686' first='Clara' last='Jolly']</strong> will fil one of the setting positions with <strong>Claire Popish</strong>. They swept past a tough Briar Woods team in their first match. At one point they won ten consecutive state championships. They hope to overcome James Wood to return to that level.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>16 <strong>First Colonial</strong> (4-2) -The defending Class 5 Virginia State champions strength may be in the power of their left sides <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='249294' first='Teagan' last='Emdadi'] </strong>and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='485079' first='Grace' last='Davies-Hackenberg']</strong>. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='481962' first='Gabby' last='Taylor']</strong> can also contribute from the left side, but she also plays a solid middle. Setter <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='664169' first='Kaiyah' last='Hiles']</strong> will orchestrate the offense running a 5/1. Libero<strong> [player_tooltip player_id='326538' first='Helen' last='Murray']</strong> will take over back row responsibilities. The Patriots came close to playing in the Virginia Volleyball Showcase championship. They lost to Courtland in a gold bracket match that knocked them out of an appearance in the finals.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>17 <strong>Flint Hill </strong>(0-0) -This may be a down year for the Huskies. They lack offensive weapons, which may force them to use setter <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='181303' first='Isabelle' last='Bardin']</strong> as a left side. At 6'3" she can hit the ball as hard as any player in the DMV area, even though her position is listed as a setter. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='437441' first='Hunter' last='Ross'] </strong>can also provide power from the middle. The back row looks solid with <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='181279' first='Kadi' last='Pynchon']</strong> at libero and frosh <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='587878' first='Delaney' last='Malloy']</strong> assisting her in the back row. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='520868' first='Caroline' last='Semko']</strong> can also help in the back row. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='465301' first='Audrey' last='Sealock'] </strong>will occupy one of the left side positions. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='699993' first='Ava' last='Zender']</strong> and <strong>Breckon Paige</strong> could set if they want to use Isabelle for offense.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>18 <strong>Ocean Lakes </strong>(4-2) -<strong> [player_tooltip player_id='333654' first='Santina' last='Martcheva']</strong> has that long, lean physique with great arm extension to dominate at the outside. The Virginia Tech commit did not play back row in the matches I watched, but appears to have the ability to play defense and pass. Setter <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='664960' first='Carmella' last='Mendoza'] </strong>runs a 5/1 offense. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='671315' first='Sienna' last='Carr']</strong> powers well from the right side and middle <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='618590' first='Lyla' last='Shannon']</strong> rejects spikes with great regularity. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='664963' first='Kayla' last='Bennett']</strong> covers the libero position.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>19<strong> St Johns </strong>(1-0) -In their first match they struggled against St. Johns Prep, winning in five with the fifth set going 19-17.
