The regional qualifiers are coming up for the 18s on March 2 and the 14-18 group on March 22. For the Chesapeake and Old Dominion Regions it is an opportunity for three teams to earn a bid to the Nationals. To date, only Maryland Juniors 14 has earned a national bid while competing in the national qualifiers (Sunshine). These are my top three clubs from the 14-18 age groups in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area.

18

emmeri bishop class of 2027

Metro - They have competed in three national qualifiers and fallen one win short of a bid in each qualifier. She brings a quick wrist snap that puts some extra velocity on the ball. Tea also brings quickness and athleticism to the position. She does need to work on getting her hands over the net when blocking. While her kill numbers went up significantly in her junior year, her block numbers decreased.

O'Connell did win both the WCAC and the VISAA state championship for the first time in school history. Most of that production occurred in the last two sets that O'Connell needed to win.

Metro - You can mix the top three teams any way you like. In head to head Metro and [program_tooltip program_id='494409' first='Blue' last='Ridge'] have split. A win over Paramount puts them on top for the time being. Metro also carries a 13 national ranking. They broke their streak of four second place finishes in tournaments after winning the Capitol Hill Classic.

Key Players - right side [player_tooltip player_id='301696' first='Nadiya' last='Johnson'] (Baylor), left side [player_tooltip player_id='303701' first='Caydence' last='Doolan'] (Marquette), left side [player_tooltip player_id='227251' first='Morgan' last='Williams'] (Tennessee), setter [player_tooltip player_id='238357' first='Claire' last='Mo'] (Columbia), middle [player_tooltip player_id='238341' first='Teodora' last='Stamenkovic'] and class of 2026 libero [player_tooltip player_id='265167' first='Laila' last='Chadwick']

[program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] - [program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] recently beat [program_tooltip program_id='494409' first='Blue' last='Ridge'] in a head to head matchup this past weekend. They did lose to [program_tooltip program_id='494409' first='Blue' last='Ridge'] and Metro in MAPL. As stated earlier this is a flip a coin position among the three teams.

Key Players - middle [player_tooltip player_id='325603' first='Parker' last='Sutherland'], middle [player_tooltip player_id='325599' first='Raegan' last='Lentz'], left side [player_tooltip player_id='249330' first='Charlotte' last='Arrington'], left side [player_tooltip player_id='238356' first='Morgan' last='Reeves'], class of 2027 left side [player_tooltip player_id='333650' first='Louise' last='Neuhart'] and 2027 setter [player_tooltip player_id='438046' first='Anna' last='Dierks'] and class of 2025 setter [player_tooltip player_id='235322' first='Avery' last='Prendergast'].

[program_tooltip program_id='494409' first='Blue' last='Ridge'] - They are not a club that participates in a lot of qualifiers. If they play in a qualifier and earn a bid they turn it down. [program_tooltip program_id='494409' first='Blue' last='Ridge'] captured a couple bids last year. They prefer the local tournaments and the known costs of going to Florida to play in AAUs. Many of their players begin competing in beach tournaments when the weather warms up.

Key Players - left side [player_tooltip player_id='181302' first='Kennedy' last='Spaid'] (Arizona State/beach), libero [player_tooltip player_id='181280' first='Brenna' last='Corbin'] (James Madison), middle [player_tooltip player_id='320815' first='Tenley' last='Mattison'], middle [player_tooltip player_id='739911' first='Colette' last='Mercker'] and class of 2025s setter [player_tooltip player_id='520349' first='Lauren' last='Hobbs'] (Christopher Newport) and right side [player_tooltip player_id='481961' first='Addison' last='Ziegler']

On the Bubble - 540 Volleyball Elite and Virginia Juniors

16

Last year Aaliyah hit outside for [program_tooltip program_id='494409' first='Blue' last='Ridge']. This year she made the switch to Paramount to get more national attention. With her and [player_tooltip player_id='528707' first='Annika' last='Dandridge'] dealing missiles from the left side position it takes the pressure off [player_tooltip player_id='296486' first='Taylor' last='Harrington'] in the middle. When working on all cylinders this is a wide open offense.

When I watched Aaliyah play for Millbrook she was taken out in the back row. For [program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] she plays six rotations for the most part, providing offense with her back row attack. Her back row play appeared solid. Late in the set Paramount may bring in a defensive specialist.

While she lists at 5'10" there appears to be a little more growth in her.

Aaliyah is not afraid to swing hard when she gets the set. She appears to fear no block.

[program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] - In the MAPL tournament they beat Metro 17 twice and Metro 16 once. They also beat [program_tooltip program_id='494409' first='Blue' last='Ridge'] 17 and 16. Except for the Triple Crown they have won all the tournaments they have competed in. The next big one will be the Sunshine Classic this weekend. She consistently buries the ball in front of the ten foot line, an impressive feat for someone in the class of 2029. When the coach finishes her setting tosses Carolyn moves into the setter's position. She is like a Shohei Ohtani where the coach has to make the decision of whether he should pitch or hit. Fortunately, Carolyn can do both, set in the back row and hit in the front row.

Her sister Grace Maria currently plays volleyball at Connecticut. The Metro 14 class certainly brings the talent. They beat Maryland Juniors in the finals of the Capitol Hill Classic but it went three sets (15-11). Metro has lost only one match all season to a 16 year old team in MAPL. To date, some of their victims have been [program_tooltip program_id='450416' first='East' last='Coast Volleyball Club'] Black at City of Oaks Challenge and MAPL as well as [program_tooltip program_id='494409' first='Blue' last='Ridge'] at Charm City Challenge.
